Transmigrated Into The Body Of The Cursed Prince Wife -
Chapter 222: "Can you leave now?"
Chapter 222: "Can you leave now?"
Ave watched her handiwork on the target board and still felt like she hadn’t had enough. She moved forward and removed the arrows from the board to reshoot them. She repeated the same thing all over again until the men started to worry about her. She didn’t even notice them anymore; it was like she was alone in the yard as her mind swirled around why she felt like Zane was lying to her about Lucian’s whereabouts. She had no reason to doubt him, but if it were true that Lucian had left for another kingdom, how come his other men didn’t know about it?
She’d overheard Oliver asking Zane about the second prince’s whereabouts and if he was aware that she was there trying to strain herself by shooting endless arrows at the board. Zane had replied to him in a whisper, and Ave had seen their interaction from the corner of her eyes. That was another reason she should be doubtful.
If he hadn’t gone to any kingdom, then why was he lying to her? Where was he then? She thought as she angrily tossed the bow aside after she was done shooting every single arrow until the muscles of her hands were hurting. If it were her body in the modern world, this little shooting wouldn’t have gotten her tired, but Selene hadn’t used her body to do anything like muscle-straining but cheat on Lucian with that bastard!
Ave was too angry and distracted by her thoughts that she almost jumped out of her skin when the men who had been watching her shoot the arrows suddenly clapped and cheered for her.
The men gathered around her, telling her how impressive her archery skills were, and for the first time today, Ave allowed herself to smile at them while momentarily putting her worries aside. Someone even handed her a clean water gourd, and she took it, drinking half of the water before handing it back to the person, who happened to be her stunned brother-in-law, Orion. He was regarding her with a mix of pride and admiration in his blue eyes.
When the soldier named Koa stepped forward and took her hand to kiss the back of it, Orion frowned in displeasure before reaching out and pulling Ave’s hand away from the soldier, who wasn’t originally from Pendragon and had been taken in by the second prince.
"Don’t even think about it. She’s my sister-in-law and a princess. Soldiers don’t go around kissing the hand of married royals," he said with a glare in his eyes as he put Ave’s hand back at her side. Ave couldn’t help but chuckle at the brat’s words. Since when did he begin to consider her a royal and his sister-in-law? She wondered in amusement as she watched him talk the soldiers into giving her space by dragging them to what they were doing before her arrival in the courtyard.
They all bowed to her before they turned to resume what they were doing. However, before Orion could walk away, he turned to ask her, "Where is brother Lucian? I haven’t seen him this morning, and I need to ask him if I can borrow his horse in the stables to practice with it."
A frown settled on Ave’s face as she turned to look at where Zane was too distracted talking to Oliver about something before she asked Orion, "Lucian’s horse is in the stable?"
He bobbed his head. "Of course, it’s there. Where else would it be? I saw it there just a while ago. Why? Isn’t the horse meant to be there?" he asked her with a confused look when he noticed her surprised expression as if the horse wasn’t supposed to be there. He had been working on his sword-fighting skills and wanting to practice riding a bigger horse like his elder brother’s. And he couldn’t take Lucian’s horse without his permission.
"Could you help me ask for his permission to use his horse?" he requested when Ave went silent and looked thoughtful. His brother would never say no to this woman, who he’d noticed how much he cared about her. He wanted to be strong enough to be able to face Caelan when they’d go back to the capital to fight.
When Ave didn’t reply, he frowned and patted her shoulder. "Did you even hear what I said, Lady Evangeline?" he grumbled as he eyed her in displeasure for not answering him.
Ave, who was lost in her thoughts, was taken aback for a moment when she heard his words. "Who is Lady Evangeline?" she asked, confused.
Orion scoffed as he eyed her up and down as if she was out of her mind for asking him that. "Who else but you? Didn’t you change your name from Selene to Evangeline?" He’d heard his brother introduce her to the king by Evangeline Lucian Pendragon.
Ave chuckled as she shook her head in disbelief. "It’s Aveline, not Evangeline," she corrected.
"Yeah, Lady Aveline. Will you help me ask for permission from brother Lucian?" he asked the most important thing to him.
"I would if only I knew where he was," she grumbled under her breath, but added, "Sure. I’ll ask him." Then she walked away from him after he smiled and ran back to meet the soldiers.
Ave walked back towards the palace with Zane following behind her, and when she was sure he was walking right by her, she smiled and turned to ask him, "By the way, did Lucian travel with his horse or did he take a carriage?"
"His Highness doesn’t like carriages; he went with his horse," he told her calmly, knowing there was no way she would know he was lying unless she went to look into the stables, where he was certain she had no idea where it was located in this palace.
"I see..." Ave said as her smile fell away. She had confirmed it completely; Zane was lying. Orion had said he’d seen the horse in the stable just a while ago, and Zane had told her Lucian had traveled with it. But what she didn’t understand was why they would be lying to her. Was Lucian trying to avoid her after last night? Was something wrong, and he didn’t want her to know about it?
If his horse was in the stables, it meant he was still in this palace somewhere. But where? she wondered depressingly as she made her way up the stairs with Zane walking behind her instead of being outside with the rest. Now that she thought about it, he must be following her around to keep her from venturing to where her husband must be in the palace. She hated that Lucian would lie to her like this just to keep her away.
He was going to get an earful when he finally decided to come out from wherever he was hiding. She was going to scold him and make him tell her why he did all this, and if he refused to tell her, she would ignore him and give him the cold shoulder until he told her everything that was wrong with him. All she needed now was for him to come out safe and sound, and she’d make him regret keeping her in the dark about everything.
She just needed to confirm that he wasn’t sick; that was all that mattered. When Ave arrived at the door of their room, she heard approaching footsteps from the other side of the hallway. Before she entered the room, she heard Princess Nina’s voice calling for Zane. He didn’t answer her until he was certain Ave had walked into the room.
Ave didn’t know why she thought to peek out to see what Nina needed Zane for, but she peeked her head out to see them walking away together while talking in a hushed voice. However, Ave’s ears were sharper than those of a normal human after the day she transported to the night creatures’ world, thus she heard a little from their conversation.
"...he would need it tonight. Don’t stay anywhere around him when you give it to him, just keep it at the entrance and walk away..." Their voices faded away.
Who were they talking about? she wondered curiously as she closed the door behind her and went to sit at the edge of the bed, where her breakfast had turned cold on the tray as she had no appetite to eat anything, especially now that she knew Lucian was somewhere around here.
Ave made a mental note to check around the palace tonight when everyone would be busy with their moon festival outside. She made her plans and waited for nighttime to arrive so she could get on with her plans. By the time the sun began to set, dinner was brought to her by a maid who said she was to wait on Ave to eat her meal so she could take the tray and plates away.
Ave was already so impatient about her plans that she didn’t bother to say anything to the unfriendly maid who stood over her and waited for her to eat. She began to stuff the food in her mouth without tasting it, and when she finally finished everything and gulped down the wine in the goblet, she thrust the tray at the maid with a glare.
"Can you leave now?" she gritted in annoyance.
"Have a very good night’s sleep, my lady." The maid bowed with a smile and walked away. And the moment the maid left, Ave suddenly began to feel sleepy, her vision began to blur, and exhaustion washed over her until the bed seemed to be beckoning her forward. Unable to resist, she collapsed on it and fell into a deep, calming sleep.
