Chapter 198: Take responsibility

"No. I just realized something. When I was in the future, I’ve always felt detached from my body. My emotions felt like they were locked away, and I couldn’t experience the real joy of life. I had no contentment despite my achievements; my body was unfeeling to anything, physically and emotionally. And when I came into this body, every single feeling I had felt foreign, and I thought it wasn’t coming from me." She looked into his eyes, where he was staring at her and listening to her attentively, and she continued to tell him something she wouldn’t have ever told anyone before.

"Lucian, I wish I hadn’t been sent to the future...I saw how Anne loved Selene and took very good care of her. She was loved by everyone and had a family, something I never had in the Eamon estate." She looked down at her lap and fought back the prickling at the back of her eyes and the burning in her throat.

"I went through a lot there. I never experienced the love of my parents or my siblings; they made me believe I was unlovable, and sometimes I think I am...I am the worst human anyone could ever love, and I doubt Anne and Kori would have loved me had I been in Selene’s body when growing up..."

Lucian frowned as he gently cupped her face, his thumbs brushing away a tear before it could fall. His voice softened as he spoke, the humor gone, replaced by deep sincerity.

"Aveline... listen to me." His gaze held hers, unwavering and warm as she looked at him with her lips trembling slightly. "You are not unlovable, and you are not the worst human—no matter what anyone in that life made you feel. Do you think that I, who have known pain and darkness my entire life, could have fallen for someone who wasn’t extraordinary?"

He took her hand and pressed it against his chest, letting her feel the steady beat of his heart. "This heart of mine, hardened as it is, doesn’t give itself easily. And yet, here you are, stirring it in ways no one else has. You didn’t need to be Selene, or anyone else, to be loved. You, as you are right now, are worthy of that love. I can see every flaw you think you have—and none of them make you any less deserving."

Ave’s eyes filled with more tears as she heard his words, and a surge of warmth consumed her to the point she allowed herself to cry.

Lucian’s fingers tightened gently around her hand. "Anne and Kori didn’t love Selene simply because she was perfect; they loved her because they considered her family. And they would have loved you too, because you are you, and you are good in ways you probably don’t even see. You have more strength, more heart than anyone I’ve known, Aveline."

He leaned closer, pressing a kiss against her eyelids. "I don’t ever want you to think you’re not worthy of love. Because even if the whole world fails to see it, I do. And I’ll remind you of it as many times as you need until you believe it, too."

Ave watched him for a moment before she flung her arms around his neck and hugged him. She clutched to him so tightly her wound burned, but she ignored it. He was the first person in all of her life who seemed to think of her in a different way, and his words touched a chord in her heart that made her realize just how much she had fallen for him. She felt him stroke her hair and then kiss her neck, where he seemed to like kissing whenever he hugged her.

Lucian was tempted to bask in this moment and kiss her lips. He had missed her so much he wanted to kiss her to show her just how much she meant to him and hold her to sleep tonight, but he knew he couldn’t for now. Not when he could still perceive the strong scent of her blood and knew she was hurt.

He tried to move away from the hug, but she clutched onto him like she didn’t want him to move away. A smile broke apart his lips as he whispered against her neck, "My love, I want to hold you like this more than anything, but I have to attend to your wound. Now be a good girl and let go of my neck." He nibbled her neck and kissed it as he moved his hands up and down the sides of her breasts when she didn’t listen to him.

"I want to hold you for a while..." she muttered as she moved closer to him and turned her neck to the side to give him more access to continue what he was doing; nibbling and kissing her neck. However, when her eyes suddenly strayed to the door where Madeline’s body still lay, she quickly moved away.

"We have to do something about her body," she said as she quickly tried to stand up, but Lucian swiftly pulled her back down on the bed. "Not before I attend to that glaring wound," he said firmly when she still attempted to get up. He didn’t give a damn about Madeline’s body; she could rot away for all he cared. What mattered to him was his wife and her health.

He could tell she was restless and tense, and to distract her from worrying unnecessarily about something he would handle, Lucian did something that caught her off guard. He loosened the front strings of her chemise and moved it down to her waist along with her dress, leaving her upper torso naked to the place where her wound was.

Ave’s eyes widened as she hurriedly crossed her arms over her breasts and glared at him, her cheeks aflame with color. "What was the need to remove my chemise when you can treat the wound from the tear you’ve created earlier?" she remarked shyly as she attempted to pull her dress back up, but he stopped her from doing so by bringing up cotton to begin cleaning the blood around the wound.

"Because I want to attend to your wound properly," he said calmly as he cleaned the blood around the wound and noticed it wasn’t as big as he thought it was, but if it wasn’t addressed, it might worsen by tommorow.

Ave pursed her lips as she self-consciously covered her breasts with her hands while he treated her wound. "You could do that without stripping me naked and revealing my tits," she glared down at him where he crouched in front of her on the bed and applied an ointment to the wound.

Lucian chuckled softly as he briefly looked away from what he was doing to her chest, both her palms were clasped against each of her breasts where gooseflesh had broken against her skin. It was all he could do not to reach his head forward and kiss her skin. He looked up at her and noticed she had seen him looking at her chest, and her face flushed with embarrassment.

"Are you feeling shy, my love? You have nothing to feel shy or embarrassed about; we are married now, remember? And I have the right to look at you." He told her, his voice dropped to a low, rough whisper as he added, "Remove your hands for me, love. I want to see you; I won’t touch or do anything. I will only look, promise." He coaxed as he finished applying the ointment and reached out for the bandage, all the while he was looking at her.

Ave knew there was nothing wrong in what he asked for, especially since she was now his wife, but she just couldn’t help her shyness. She looked at his eyes that bored into hers intensely while she bit the inside of her cheeks. She hesitated for just a minute before she slowly brought down her hands that were clasping her breasts. She saw his eyes trail away from hers and then move down to her chest, seeing the male approval and admiration in his amber eyes.

Lucian stared at the two pale mounds in front of his eyes with pinkish peaks. The tempting mounds rose upwards as she took a steadying breath. It was all he could do not to reach out and touch one, and as if he had, her nipples hardened, the firm little buds rising in front of him. He felt his muscles tense as heat coursed through his veins, spreading and igniting flames in his body.

He tied the bandage around her waist with his eyes on her, and when he knotted it at the back without her making a sound of pain, he knew his tactic of distracting her from her pain and the body in the room had worked. However, he had aroused himself in the process of doing so. He looked up at her eyes and asked quietly, "Can I kiss one?"

Ave, who had been watching him admire her chest the whole time while she fought the desires that went through her from having to watch his reaction, was taken aback by his question. She hadn’t even realized he was done attending to her wound as she hadn’t felt the pain until he’d asked her the question. She felt heat creep up her face, biting down on her bottom lip, she nodded and watched as his eyes brightened up with a boyish grin on his face.

Ave’s fingers clutched around the sheets of the bed as she saw him lean forward. She had expected him just to kiss as he said he would, but she felt his mouth latch onto her right nipple, and when his teeth grazed the sensitive peak, she gasped and instinctively reached out and grabbed his hair.

"Lucian..." She called out his name in a surprised whisper when he began to ravish her breast with his mouth, suckling it like the most delicious delicacy in the world. He even let out a throaty groan as he used his tongue to lick her. Her toes curled up, and her lower abdomen tightened up as her heart began to beat faster. When she thought he would do much more than that, and she wished he would, he pulled away from her and looked up at her face. His amber eyes had turned so dark they looked almost black.

"You are not only delicious but addictive, my love," he told her as he leaned forward and pecked her lips before he helped her pull up her chemise and the dress. He put back her buttons and then raised his hand to move back the few strands of hair falling over her flushed face.

"It’s midnight; everyone must have retired to their chambers because tomorrow is a big day. I have to take the body away. Will you wait for me here while I’m gone?" he asked as he stared into her eyes, and, as expected, she shook her head.

"No. I will come with you," she said as she stood up to her feet at the same time he did. She had been the one to kill the girl, and it would only be right if she helped in hiding the body rather than allowing him to do her dirty work for her.

Lucian had no objections; he would feel much better if she was beside him. Thus, he nodded. "Good. Wear this; it’s cold outside." He handed her a coat he took out from his late mother’s things left in the wardrobe, and then reached out and pulled off the bedsheets on the bed.

While Ave wore the coat he handed her, she watched him walk up to Madeline and wrap her body with the bedsheet until it looked like a bundle of clothes rather than a dead body.

"Do one thing for me, my love. Bring the other bedsheet in the wardrobe and clean up the blood on the floor. Can you do that?" he turned to ask her, checking if she was okay with blood, as he tried to bundle up the body properly.

"Yes, I can," she said as she hurried to do as he told her without hesitation. Ave came back with the bedsheet and began wiping the blood on the floor with it. She tried not to recall how she had killed the girl and instead focused on making sure no trace was left behind. She picked up the pieces of the broken vase and put them into the sheet, bundling it up at the same time Lucian finished bundling up the body.

"All set," he announced as he went back and put on his armor as he couldn’t hold it nor leave it behind before he turned back to Ave and kissed her forehead. "Follow closely behind me; it won’t be easy going out of the palace, especially when the Emperor has added more guards on the grounds due to the captives being held in the dungeons. If you can’t keep up, you can stay behind while I do the rest," he told her.

Ave noticed how he seemed to be treating her like a kid, and she patted his chest to assure him. "I can do it, don’t worry about me. I am not as fragile or weak as you think. I will go with you until we bury the body."

Lucian arched his brow. "Who said anything about burying the body?" he chuckled softly.

"Aren’t we going out to bury her?" Ave asked, taken aback.

"I am not going to waste my time digging the ground to bury her; I am going to burn her to ashes in the forest," he told her as he turned around and carried the bundle onto his shoulder, but Ave came to stand in front of him with a deep frown on her face.

"I don’t like the sound of that; she deserves to be buried even though she is a total bitch. I can’t live with myself knowing I had killed someone and yet didn’t give her a proper resting place. I can dig the grave if you find it hard to do. I killed her, and it will be me who takes full responsibility for my actions."
