Chapter 175: Crazy couple

"Oh Lord, what’s wrong with him?" she exclaimed in panic, and her panicked voice made all heads turn in their direction, but Ave didn’t care as she bent down and pulled his head up as he seemed to be breathing with difficulty on the dusty ground. "What happened? Oh no, was the food poisoned?!" she yelled out as another horror came over her at the realization that he had been poisoned, and everyone eating gasped as they dropped their spoons.

Zane gritted his teeth as he tried to pull Lucian to a sitting position so he could breathe properly. "It’s your fault His Highness is in this condition. You fed him his worst nightmare, Milady, now calm down and don’t make the people panic more than you have. Help me hold his head up," Zane instructed the shaken and confused Ave, who was taken aback by his accusing words.

She did as she was instructed and at the same time questioned, "How is it my fault? I didn’t poison him," she said defensively as he was accusing her of something she hadn’t done. She saw how red Lucian’s face was, and despite the fact that he was struggling to breathe, he glared at Zane with his eyes and held on to Ave’s hand tightly, letting his head fall towards her when he was pulled to a sitting position.

Ave impulsively cradled his head to her chest and rubbed his cheek with her palm as she heard Zane say, "His Highness doesn’t eat anything that has chicken in it; it makes him sick," he told her as he retrieved a small bottle from his inner pocket and uncapped it before he handed it to her.

Ave took the bottle almost in a trance at those words. He was allergic to chicken? Then why had he not told her and eaten it like it was the most delicious thing on earth? She wondered as she looked down at him where he still struggled to breathe and was clutching tightly to her arm. Without hesitation, she tipped the bottle towards his mouth and poured the medicine down his throat. He swallowed it, and immediately she saw him take a deep breath before he slowly began to breathe normally, but his body went limp as if he’d lost his strength.

"What’s happening?" she asked alarmingly when she saw his eyes close completely and his weight had grown heavy against her.

"He will be fine in some time. It happens whenever he consumes certain meals, which is why I carry that bottle of medicine around with him in case. The last time this happened, he almost lost his life. His body can’t heal from this like it does with other things, and I hope from now on, My Lady, you will be mindful of what you force him to eat because he wouldn’t say no when it’s you who feeds it to him." Zane spoke in an indifferent, cold voice that made Ave realize that while the man might be neutral toward her all this while, when it came to his friend, he doesn’t take risks nor would he be friendly if she caused him harm rather than good. Even the look in his eyes said so.

Ave felt a stab of guilt in her heart. She didn’t know about his allergy, and this was the first time she’d heard of someone being allergic to chicken. When he hadn’t eaten, she’d thought he was just neglecting his meals for no reason, but it seemed he didn’t touch it because of the chicken broth made with the rice and then the chicken dish she’d ordered again. But the fact that he had eaten it without telling her that he would feel sick baffled and confused her. Couldn’t he just have told her that he was allergic to it?

"I am sorry, I didn’t know he was allergic to it," she apologized to Zane, who was still looking at her with hostility and resentment. But her words made the hostility go down as he asked, "Allergic? Is that what it’s called, I mean his sickness?" There was now curiosity in his hazel-grey eyes as he looked at her.

For years, even Lucian’s late mother had tried to find the meaning behind his sickness, and after so much research and trouble, she found a medicine that helped him in such conditions, but there had never been a name for the sickness as no one knew why it occurred. Thus, now that Ave called it by a name, Zane was intrigued and curious.

Ave nodded as she looked down at Lucian’s seemingly resting face as she cradled his head to her chest and stroked his face. "Yes, ’allergic’ is the term we use. Where I’m from, when a person’s body reacts badly to a certain food or substance, we say they’re ’allergic’ to it. It’s like... their body sees it as something harmful, even though it’s harmless for most people."

Zane’s expression mirrored his understanding, and she continued to say, "In Lucian’s case, it sounds like his body has this extreme reaction to chicken. Allergies aren’t common, but they can be very serious. That’s why, where I come from, people are usually careful to avoid the foods that trigger these reactions. And I can’t seem to understand why he ate it when he knows this outcome," she muttered out loud.

Zane was tempted to tell her why but knew Lucian wouldn’t appreciate his interference in their matters, especially as telling her might pull her away from him. He wasn’t ready to bid farewell to the world yet by risking his life to break it to the woman who acted clueless about why the prince did what he did. Lucian was a fool in love, Zane could tell that much even though he hadn’t admitted it to him yet that he loved the strange soul in Selene’s body.

Zane glanced down at Lucian. "So this... allergy. There’s no way to cure it forever?" he asked.

"Not really. It’s something that stays with a person for life," Ave explained. "But as long as he avoids it—and keeps that medicine you carry around close by—he’ll be safe. And now that I know about it, I’ll make sure he doesn’t have to risk this ever again." She promised as she used her fingers to brush back a few strands of his hair sticking to his face.

"One more thing, Milady," Zane said seriously, "this must stay between us. We wouldn’t want his enemies knowing about this allergy, understand?" he demanded coolly, but before Ave could reply, Lucian’s hoarse voice cut through, "Don’t use that voice on her or I will cut your tongue off." He warned as he turned his head so he could look up at Ave, whose expressive blue eyes didn’t hide her relief at seeing him regain consciousness. After the brief relief came displeasure and then anger.

"Damn you, Lucian! How could you eat that when you know it’s poison to your body?" She glared heatedly down at him as she slapped his chest, but Lucian pressed the hand she used to hit him down against his chest and then brought it up to his lips and kissed it.

"I am sorry if I worried you; I just can’t help but like it when you worry about me, Babe." He said in humor to lessen her worries for him, which made Ave even more angry, and she pushed his head away from her chest and made an attempt like she would strangle him for getting her worried and yet saying it out. However, before she could, Zane’s hand had shot out and grabbed her hands.

"What do you think you are doing?" He narrowed his eyes dangerously down at her as he saw that she wanted to strangle the prince.

"What does it look like I am doing? I want to strangle him to his death to wipe that smile off his face!" She snapped aggressively as she tried to jerk her hand away from Zane’s grip, but he held on tight until Lucian slapped him hard on the back of his head.

"Let go of her and don’t stick your nose where it doesn’t belong. She has the right to strangle me if she wants to; release her and go arrange our horses, we will be leaving soon." Lucian commanded, and Zane looked at him incredulously before he released Ave and stood up from his crouching position. It seemed it was time he got used to stop being the mama bear and allowed the prince to suffer at the hands of this crazy woman, because he deserved it for allowing the woman to always have her way without stopping her.

When Zane left, the onlookers who had gathered around the man they had all thought was dying and had been poisoned watched as the woman straddled his torso and grabbed his neck before she began to strangle him while he laughed and coughed without making any attempt to stop her. Deciding that the couple were two insane people with no sense of shame, they shook their heads and began to return to their tables to finish their food, completely ignoring the two crazy people.

"Next time, you will think twice before you make me worry!" Ave scolded as she gave up strangling him and slapped his cheek instead, not hard, a playful slap, and then she attempted to get off him only for Lucian to wrap his arms around her and pull her down to him and hug her. "I am sorry." He apologized sincerely, his voice dropped to a low, rough whisper that vibrated against her breasts and made her heart tremble.

He let go as quickly as he’d pulled her down, and then she hurriedly got up to her feet, her dress covered in dust and mud as the ground wasn’t cemented. She reached out her hand to Lucian to help him up, and though he could stand on his own now that he’d taken the medicine, he reached up his hand and took her help with a smile.

"Shit, your clothes are covered in mud," Ave pointed out as she looked at his dirty attire since he’d been the one lying on the ground.

"Don’t worry, I have a place in mind where I can clean it off. You will like the view there," Lucian purred as he took her hand and led her away from the eatery and outside, where the sun seemed to be getting less hot and looked like it would set at any moment.

"Don’t you think we should be getting back to the palace now? You have a war to..." She trailed off when Lucian turned to assure her with a warm look in his dark eyes, "That’s why I want to spend the whole of today out here, with you."

Ave’s heart missed another beat. And she knew if he didn’t stop these affectionate ways he looked at and spoke to her, she would crumble down to his mercy and fall head over heels for him, even though she had no idea what it felt like to love someone or be loved by them.

When they reached the place where the horses were tied and Zane was waiting there for them with the other guard, Lucian told them, "You two can go ahead with the bags. I want to stop by somewhere with her," he said as he walked towards his horse with Ave.

Zane didn’t like that idea as he believed it was not safe for Lucian to go around without at least another guard. "Evan can go ahead; I will come with you two," he volunteered, but Lucian turned to shoot him a look. "I said you should go ahead," he said with a voice that left no room for argument as he helped Ave onto the horse and mounted behind her.

Without waiting for Zane to insist on coming with them, he snapped his reins and urged the horse to go faster.
