Chapter 171: Put aside all thoughts and enjoy the day with him
Chapter 171: Put aside all thoughts and enjoy the day with him
As Ave and Lucian left the palace walls through the back gate, thinking no one would notice them leaving the palace together, right at the top of the building close to the back gate, Edward, who had come here to summon the crow that belonged to his uncle to reply to the message he had sent them yesterday as he couldn’t risk doing it in the main palace, noticed the two and a frown came upon his face as he wondered where they were off to.
He was still in a bad mood at the fact that, despite his uncle having been woken up from his slumber, he couldn’t leave the underworld, because a spell of Rosette still bound them there. No one could go in or out without the spell breaking. He wanted to send a message to his uncle through his crow, who could fly up the barrier of the spell, to ask him if he knew the witch who had woken him up. But now that he saw the second prince going out with Selene, something else caught his interest, and his eyes glimmered wickedly as he hurriedly left the building.
Meanwhile, Ave sat in front of Lucian’s horse stiffly, as she didn’t want to relax into him for any reason. Her back was already aching, but after the words he had spoken before they mounted the horse, she felt embarrassed for some reason when she had been the one to use the F word first, and he’d gone all out to say such a thing and even called her babe again.
She had been too stunned and remained glued to the ground when he told her to mount the horse, and when she didn’t move, he had swiftly grabbed her waist and placed her on the horse like a doll before he mounted behind her. Before she could insist on having her own horse, he snapped the reins, and now that they were away from the palace, she gripped the saddle horn and dug her fingers into it as she sat stiff and straight.
"You will hurt your back if you don’t relax, Aveline," his words fell right against her ear and made her stiffen even more, and her toes curled inside her shoes. He wasn’t speeding the hoarse, and she felt the warmth of his breath on her ear.
"I am fine," she remarked stubbornly. She would rather remain like this than allow him to mess with her senses again, but damn, her back was aching, and her thighs were throbbing as the position was not comfortable. And as if reading her thought, she felt Lucian bring his hand towards hers and placed the reins in her hand, "You can control Aziz, and I will rest for some time here," he said, at the same time slipping his arms around her waist and then resting his chin against her shoulder, while her back automatically relaxed against his front from how he was holding her.
Ave’s eyes rounded as she looked down at the arms he had around her waist, "What the hell do you think you are doing?" she demanded with a slight shake in her voice as her hand tightened on the reins.
"I am resting on your shoulder, Babe. I am tired and can barely keep my eyes open with you here," he muttered as he inhaled her scent and closed his eyes as if to savor it. Only her presence made him sleep well, and last night he hadn’t gotten that sleep, and now that she was here and torturing herself by sitting stiffly on his mighty horse, he couldn’t afford to let her hurt her back and took the opportunity to rest on her while she had no choice but to also relax her back on him.
Ave opened her mouth to tell him to let her go, but recalling the exhaustion she had noticed on his face and how his eyes looked tired even more when he turned the amber to black, made her allow him to rest on her, even though her heart was beating loudly and her stomach was fluttering with a feeling she could barely describe.
When she felt his arms tighten around her waist, Ave cleared her throat, "Why do you have to train all night when you can do that in the day?" she asked to distract herself from his hold or the feeling in her own body. She felt him snuggle his head closer on her shoulder before he replied, "Because I needed to hone my skills more before the war. This battle is different, we will be fighting against thousands of supernatural soldiers from Valarie."
Ave pursed her lips, "But I heard you can never be defeated because of your strength. They say you are like a devil on the battlefield and no one can match your strength and fighting tactics. I don’t think you need that much training if the rumors were true," she remarked and then asked, "Are the rumors true?"
She’d heard so many rumors about Lucian, and if they were true, then she didn’t think he’d need to deprive himself of sleep when he was naturally gifted with strength. But the rumors had said so much more about him other than his strength for her to believe it. They had called him a heartless monster, and the Lucian she had come to know was far from being that.
Although Ave didn’t like that he would be forced to battle people because they were different, she knew he had no say nor the choice not to fight alongside the soldiers.
She heard Lucian let out a chuckle where his chest vibrated against her back. "I never thought you were the kind to listen to gossips, Babe." He drawled out as he subconsciously used his fingers to caress her flat belly, causing Ave to shiver slightly.
"What do you expect when that is the only way one can get entertainment? I can’t turn away when I hear something worth listening to," she said defensively as she shifted on the saddle to get away from his hold, but there was no space to move to when he was holding her like that. "You didn’t answer my question. Are the rumors true?" she asked.
"The rumors are exaggerated. I might be born with inhuman strength, but that doesn’t mean I don’t need to train to hone it," he answered and then continued, "Moreover, facing supernatural beings is different from facing normal soldiers. Though I heal fast, I can lose my life if care isn’t taken, as there are dark witches among them who could use spells and magic to attack. I am not immune to magic and spells," he told her as he closed his eyes. That was why he wanted to spend every second with her before the war, in case something were to go wrong.
He wouldn’t have wanted to willingly fight in this war if Valarie weren’t also committing the mistake of hiding dark witches, who were not only the enemies of white witches but mankind in general. They were as vicious as the night creatures and good at manipulating anyone, and now that he knew that the night creatures were no longer a myth and some of them still exist, it would be better he killed as many dark witches as possible before they decided to join forces to find the witch with the Rosa powers.
Ave went silent as she heard he wasn’t immune to spells and magic. She hadn’t been worried about him going to war because she believed he was immune to all that and would come back unharmed, like the rumors say he did after every battle. But it seemed he wasn’t immune to everything else. She didn’t know why she felt uneasy about him leaving now. What if something happened to him? What if a dark witch attacked him? And why was she even concerning herself with all that? Why did it matter to her that he lived when he seemed not to be her key to returning to the future anymore?
She could find her way back without his help if she could ask Heaven to interpret what that soul-swapping spell meant, or if she could find out who had brought her here. He was obviously not her key back home when Heaven had said a selfish heart had brought her here to achieve something she had failed in, which Ave believed was that shadow woman without a doubt. She had lied to her about healing Lucian and all that to achieve her own selfish goals, which Ave didn’t know about.
She had no reason to care if Lucian lived or died, but yet she felt she wouldn’t be able to take it if anything were to happen to him while she was still here. She hadn’t realized she was going to miss him if he left tomorrow until this very moment when she realized he could end up dead if care wasn’t taken. He needed his training as much as possible, but he had left that and came along with her...
Ave was touched by that. Her heart swelled with warmth and her throat tightened with unnamed emotions.
Deciding to put all that aside, she made the silent decision to make today worthwhile for both of them before he’d leave tomorrow. He was always serious and lived a boring life; perhaps she could show him how to have fun today and then allow tomorrow to fend for itself while they enjoyed today.
With that thought in mind, she removed any thoughts of the spell book and her worries from her mind and snapped at the reins to make the horse gallop faster with the wind blowing fiercely at her hair and face, and she smiled when Lucian held on tight.
Not long after, they arrived at the town where the market was located. Lucian left his horse where he had the last time they came to the town, and Ave didn’t have to ask to know someone was following behind them again.
Turning back, as expected, she noticed Zane and another guard, like the last time, came to a stop at the tree where Lucian tied his horse, and she looked up at Lucian accusingly, only to remember she had promised herself on the way here not to lose her temper or do anything that might ruin their time together today when tomorrow he would be stepping into a dangerous war.
She took a deep breath and then asked with a forced smile on her face, "I thought you said Zane is busy with some important matters. How come he is here as your bodyguard?"
Lucian looked at Zane, who cleared his throat and scratched the back of his head, as he had been in his room when Ave had come knocking. But because Lucian had ordered him not to show himself to her until she had agreed he go with her, Zane had remained silent in the room until she gave up and left. Now, however, he felt awkward and strange standing here when she questioned the second prince.
"Zane, didn’t you tell me you had something important to do and wouldn’t be able to escort my girlfriend? Why are you here?" Lucian questioned with a clueless expression when he was the one who had ordered him to come with them but remain at a distance so Ave wouldn’t notice. But since she had noticed, he shamelessly threw his friend at the mouth of the lion to escape her outburst and upcoming temper if she knew he had ordered Zane to ignore her.
Zane was taken aback by Lucian’s words, and he was even more surprised when Ave turned to him with a disappointed look in her eyes as she came to stand before him, hands on her hips, and shook her head.
"You gave me your word yesterday, yet you backed out at the last minute. All that doesn’t even matter to me now since Lucian was kind enough to volunteer to escort me despite his tight schedule. But what I want to know is, where on earth were you when I was looking for you all over the palace? Did you hide inside your locked chamber while I knocked?" She arched a brow as she looked at him suspiciously. She had heard movement in his chamber and was certain he was inside.
If he didn’t hide from her this morning, Lucian would have had enough time to train more so he wouldn’t get defeated tomorrow, Ave thought in displeasure.
Zane looked at Lucian, who remained silent and was staring at him as if also waiting to hear the answer, just like his so-called girlfriend. He was tempted to point a finger at the prince and tell Ave that it was him who had ordered him to ignore her this morning, but then he decided against it and silently took the blame. "I was in my chamber, but..." He wanted to at least defend himself when Lucian interjected with fake words of disbelief.
"You were in your chamber when you told me you had something important to do? Tsk, it seems you don’t like my girlfriend’s company. But it’s fine, I am always here to be at her service. But next time, don’t agree to things if you cannot keep to your words, Zane." Lucian flashed him a smile, then he took Ave’s hand to lead her away before she would push at the matter and realize he had something to do with it as well.
This would teach Zane a lesson not to allow his Ave to manipulate him into making him come with her anywhere next time, and this would also make Ave never ask Zane when he was there to be at her service and would gladly drop anything to come with her. Lucian almost laughed evilly in his head when he noticed Zane’s dumbstruck expression and heard Ave say, "I will never ask Zane to escort me anywhere from now on tsk."
’I never knew you were one big devil, Lucian,’ came his beast’s words in his head. ’And I am proud that you are finally acting like I instructed you to!’
