Chapter 169: Princess treatment
Chapter 169: Princess treatment
Ave woke up the next morning feeling a bit gloomy and tired because she hadn’t slept well last night, despite the fact that she had hoped to sleep better here. She sat on the bed with pursed lips as she stared at the swaying curtains of Selene’s room in the doomed palace. She had waited last night for Lucian to come here as she’d met Zane in the evening when he returned and she’d told him to tell Lucian that she was here tonight in case he was looking for her.
Ave was afraid to fall asleep last night because she didn’t want to be transported into the night creatures’ world again like the last time she had slept alone without a certain someone beside her, holding her to sleep.
She had hoped he would even come so she could talk to him about the book in his library, though Ave knew deep down that wasn’t the only reason why she had hoped for him to be here. However, she had refused to accept the other reason because she knew it wasn’t good for her to get used to sleeping in his arms because it offered her a sense of security and protection. His presence made her sleep without any nightmares or fear of being transported. It was totally wrong for her to get used to him to that extent. It was wrong in every way she tried to look at it.
She wasn’t Selene, and she didn’t want to be her; she was living in a body that wasn’t hers, and if there was something she knew, it was that whatever kindness Lucian had shown her, it was because of the body she was in. When he looked at her, he probably just saw the woman he once loved and had betrayed him, not Aveline Eamon. He didn’t even know what she looked like, and if it weren’t for Madeline, even Ave would have forgotten what her true face was like, whenever she looked into the mirror, all she saw was the face of Victoria, a woman she despised.
Not to mention, lately, she had been feeling way too comfortable in the body that she didn’t like it. Just like what Heaven had said, she should go back to her own world unless she wanted to cause the world ruin. She dared not allow herself to get used to Lucian so much that he would start interfering with her thoughts of returning to her time. What had happened between them yesterday afternoon had been the main reason why she had remained awake in bed last night, unable to sleep as her mind replayed the scene like a broken record.
The way he’d kissed her, and the way his warm mouth had closed around her hardened peak through her dress sent a tingling warmth throughout her body and made her toes curl up involuntarily under the sheets. She felt the rush of heat that settled on her cheeks and buried her face in her palms in embarrassment. Recalling the scene early in the morning made her feel like it was happening all over again, and she cursed under her breath and turned her head into the pillow to muffle her screams.
She had so much to do today, but the first thing that came to her mind this morning was Lucian! She was supposed to worry about buying the ingredients she needed to cook the dishes tomorrow; she needed to prepare all the ingredients today and cook a small part of the dish so Lucian could get a taste of the modern dishes before he’d depart to the battlefield tomorrow. She wanted him to taste her cooking and...ugh!!!
Lucian’s thoughts again?! She screamed in her head as it seemed she could never get rid of him completely unless she hastened her plans to look for ways to return to 2024. And before she would get too distracted from what she needed to do again, Ave hurried out of the bed and stretched her arms. She needed to bathe and go look for Zane in his room so they could leave, Ave thought, but before she could even take a step forward, the door to her room had opened and three maids, along with Lydia, walked in with buckets of hot water.
Seeing that Ave was awake early, Lydia beamed at her in surprise. "You’re awake so early, Milady. I didn’t want to wake you up, that’s why I didn’t knock on the door," she said when she noticed Ave’s furrowed brows as she stared at the maids walking in with the hot water. Lydia turned to another maid outside and said, "You can go and tell the kitchen cook to start breakfast since she’s awake now."
"Yes, Lydia." The young maid at the door nodded and left to report to the kitchen cook.
Ave snapped back to her senses at those orders. "Why are you doing all this? I thought I was no longer supposed to get the princess treatment anymore?" Ave asked in bemusement. Ever since she had been deposed, no maid had attended to her needs or brought her hot water. The only hot water she got in the main palace was sent by Thalia through her maidservant every morning, which wasn’t enough to fill the tub, and she only ended up using warm water. She had done everything by herself, and when she’d stayed the night here, she hadn’t expected any special treatment this morning.
Lydia smiled at her mistress before she explained, "Milady, last night when His Highness came back late at night, he assembled all the servants and ordered us to treat you just like we used to before your deposition. Every need of yours must be met, and anyone who goes against you shall answer to him."
Ave was taken aback at those words. Lucian had come back to the doomed palace last night? When? He had even assembled the servants without her hearing anything, when she had been awake until dawn. And why would he order them to treat her like a royal when she was no longer his wife and had no right to anything here? He’d had his wife deposed, and by doing so, she had no right to even come back here, but Ave had even spent the night and he’d allowed it.
Once he married Madeline, this would be her room and everything that once belonged to Selene would be hers, while Ave would be their servant like the princess had said. But him ordering his servants to treat her like a royal was totally not something she expected and not something she knew was normal. Why did he do that?... She wondered silently.
"Where is he?" She asked Lydia, who was now setting the dress she would wear after her bath on the bed.
Lydia looked up and replied, as she knew who Ave was referring to. "He must be in the training camps, Milady. His Highness left the palace immediately after he gave us the orders. He took his training swords and gear; he must have gone for the all-night training since they will be departing for the war tomorrow morning. He does that whenever there is an upcoming war; he spends the days and nights training. Have you forgotten?" Lydia asked with a confused and concerned look in her large green eyes. Was her mistress still suffering from her memory loss after that incident, not to remember that the prince doesn’t stay in the palace when a war is coming?
It had come as a surprise that he had even gotten the time to return here last night to warn all of them about ways to treat Ave. Everyone knew how busy all the Pendragon princes get at times like these, especially the second prince. Sometimes, he would not even return for weeks and would remain in the training camps, but this time he had even stayed for the birthday ceremony and even had the time to come back here.
Ave, who heard and saw Lydia’s concerned look at her questioning the prince’s whereabouts, quickly laughed. "How can I forget? I thought since he had come here to order the servants, he must have spent the night here. But I guess, he left," she said, then she suddenly became worried when she heard that he spends the night at the training camps.
"Did he eat last night before he left?" Ave asked before she could stop herself from voicing out her concerns for the second prince who had spent the night in the training camps.
Lydia shook her head, "No, Milady. He didn’t eat, and as far as I know, they don’t give food at the training camps."
Ave found herself worrying about Lucian even though she didn’t want to. Would he even get the chance to sleep? Training all night...she couldn’t imagine how tired he must be by now. Not to mention, he had made time to come here and give the servants orders on how to treat her. He had made time in his tight schedule to come here for her sake and not even wait to eat dinner...
Lucian’s kindness was going to be her undoing if he didn’t stop it; he was making her slowly crumble to his world. She could feel the walls around her heart cracking and crumbling with each and every little thing he did for her. But then, was he doing it for Aveline or because she was in this body? She wondered, feeling a bitter taste in her throat at the fact that it was because she was in body of a woman he had once loved.
She would keep that in mind whenever Selene’s heart began to misbehave like anytime he did something or when he came close to her. Whatever feelings she was having towards Lucian and his little actions weren’t coming from her but the body she was in. Her original body was incapable of feeling any of these strange emotions. She was dead emotionally and physically. She was unable to feel the act of intimacy or be moved by anyone. It had only started when she came into this body which meant it was the body’s doing.
Noticing how her mistress had spaced out and looked lost in thought, Lydia repeated the words she had spoken a few times now, but Ave was too lost to hear. "Milady, the bath is ready!" she said a bit louder to gain her attention, and Ave jumped at her loud voice.
"Gosh, Lydia. I’m standing right beside you; what was the need to yell?" Ave remarked as she patted her chest and stared at the apologetic girl, who bowed her head in apology. For a moment, Ave had believed Lydia had yelled because Lucian had arrived all of a sudden, until she heard her words. She wasn’t ready to see Lucian today anymore, and perhaps it would be good if they didn’t meet until he would leave for the war. She was going to the market with Zane and was thankful she wouldn’t have to see Lucian, as he was too busy with training. With that thought, she followed behind Lydia to the bathing room, but who would have thought the Heavens weren’t in her favor again?
