Chapter 154: Mistake

Ave didn’t know why the thought of being bitten by fangs sent a fear she didn’t know she had down her spine. Recalling the night creature she had encountered last night and his ugly fangs, and how he had tried to sink them into her flesh, made her heart beat wildly against her ribs as cold sweat broke out across her skin, with dread filling her mind. She quickly shook her head in panic.

"Please don’t bite me, I don’t want to. It’s scary. Don’t bite me," she cried as she turned her head away from Lucian, seeing his face suddenly transform into a blurry form of someone with large, ugly fangs. Faint blurry memories, she didn’t know when they had happened, began to flood her mind. She felt her back being pinned into the muddy ground with someone straddling her as they drew blood from her neck. It was like it was happening again, and she could feel the pain of it all over again.

She felt the fangs sink deeper into her flesh, the pain, and the helplessness that overwhelmed her made her cry out as she began to thrust her hands and legs to try to free herself from this person who seemed hell-bent on sucking her dry. She dug her fingers into the mud, though in truth it was into the mattress, but because she had been transported in her subconscious into an imagination that felt like a memory her mind was conjuring at the thought of fangs, she cried out someone’s name she didn’t even recognize or know.

"Roland..." The word rolled out of her mouth as she tried to get the weight off her body and make the pain stop. She could feel like her blood was draining away, and if she didn’t do something, she would die right now. Ave acted on instinct and her survival impulse, gritted her teeth, and jerked her head towards the blurry image of the man straddling her. She muttered a spell under her breath and used her strength to strike at the person’s chest. He was flung away from her like a piece of rag doll as he went flying and hit the room’s wall with a banging sound.

Not until she heard his painful groan, and the weight and pain were gone, did she come back to her senses. Breathing heavily, she looked toward the groaning person only to see that it was none other than Lucian. She had used a killing spell she’d somehow seen in that book but hadn’t even thought to master, yet it had come to her mind when she sensed danger!

He was clutching tightly to his chest where she had hit him with the spell while he coughed. Ave went rigidly still as she saw the blood he coughed out and how he looked deadly pale. When he looked at her with unfocused amber eyes that held disbelief and surprise, she didn’t have to be told or think twice before she ran out of the bed and went to him.

Ave fell on her knees in front of him with a cry of terror as the spell she’d used was a killing spell meant to kill night creatures. She hadn’t known what came over her a while ago and how she had seen a night creature’s face on Lucian. She hurriedly pulled him close to her and cradled him to her chest as she tried to wipe away the blood he was coughing out with shaky hands while she cried,

"Oh my Lord! Lucian, I didn’t mean to hurt you. Heavens, what have I done? Please don’t die on me, I’d never be able to forgive myself if anything were to happen to you. I might end up really killing myself if you were to die, please stay, don’t close your eyes. Let me heal you, I will heal you...!" She rambled panickedly as she cupped his cold cheeks and tried to make him look at her. If he really died from this, then she really couldn’t imagine how she’d keep on in this era, not to mention if she had been the one to kill him.

Ave tried to remember the spell to heal, but because of her panicked state, she couldn’t think clearly and couldn’t even differentiate between the healing and the killing spell. She was still trying to bring herself to focus when she felt Lucian’s hand come to rest against hers on his cheek and then used his thumb to caress the back of her hand before he managed to say,

"Rest assured...cough! I won’t die from this killing spell meant for the night creatures...I will only go through pain because you have cast it and then recover in some time..." Those words seemed to take too much of his energy as he groaned and clutched at his chest, which felt like a thousand needles were being pierced into his heart and slowly making deep cuts within him.

If it had been someone else who had cast the spell, Lucian wouldn’t have felt it like he was now, as it wasn’t meant for his kind of being, but since it had been Ave, it had hit him. Though he might recover from it in a while or in a day, it was painfully unbearable. When she was panicking earlier on the bed, he had tried to assure her that he wouldn’t bite her, but she had used the spell before he saw it coming.

Ave, who saw how he seemed to be struggling, cradled his head to her chest even more as she used her hand to rub his face and his sweat-covered forehead. Even though he had assured her that it wouldn’t kill him, she couldn’t afford to take the risk when he looked on the verge of dying at this moment.

"You jerk! You should have hit me when I was in that state to bring me back to my senses! If you’d done that, I wouldn’t have hurt you!" She cried out as she hit him softly on the chest, but he groaned and then laughed at the same time, and she quickly rubbed his chest.

"Sorry, sorry!" She apologized as she ran her hand up and down his chest, but his hand rested on hers and pressed her palm down on his painful chest as he glanced up at her with smoldering amber eyes that looked as dark and deep as the flames from hell. They burned with great intensity and another emotion she couldn’t pinpoint.

"Are you worried about me, Babe?" He questioned softly as his coughing subsided with a playful hint to his voice as if he was trying to lighten the tense mood. Gently, he caressed the back of her hand.

Ave was too worried and overwhelmed with the fear of him dying that she no longer cared what he used to address her. She glared down at him with tear-filled eyes, her lips quivering uncontrollably as she tried to hold back her emotions that came from the fear that she’d been the one to hurt him. She would never have done it if she had been in her right mind. "Of course I’m worried, you idiot!" she exclaimed in frustration as she cradled his head even more to her.

Even though the pain was subsiding slowly, Lucian couldn’t help the happiness that bubbled in his stomach at the fact that she was worried about him and was even cradling his head to her breast and holding him like this. He raised his hand to her face and brushed away the tears. "You should be. I like it," he whispered, satisfaction laced in his hoarse voice.

Ave didn’t care about his words at this point or try to reason why on earth he looked pleased when she was dying of worry. She took a deep breath and tried to recall the healing spells, and slowly they began to return to her. "Let me try to heal you, I will_" she didn’t get to finish her words before Lucian placed his finger against her lips and shook his head.

"No. Don’t even attempt it, Aveline. You might have healed Selene’s maidservant," he gritted as he recalled that she had risked her life to save a betrayer he was going to kill with his own hands soon, and then added, "but you can’t heal me. Whenever you heal me, you’ll end up getting my pain and my injuries. You can heal everyone you want, but not me, and don’t ever attempt it. Never." He warned calmly as he locked eyes with her stubborn ones that regarded him with a look he knew meant she wasn’t listening to him.

Ave scoffed at him. It was her fault that he was in pain, and she would willingly take the pain into her body if it meant healing him and ridding herself of the guilt and an unknown fear of losing him, which had gripped her chest in a way that made her feel suffocated. Looking down at her palm, where the wound had begun to heal completely, she reached out to poke it to draw blood when Lucian grabbed her wrist and looked at her sternly.

"I said don’t do it. I am no longer in pain; it’s gone," he said at the same time he forced himself into a sitting position so she wouldn’t attempt to heal him with her blood again. He wasn’t willing to take the risk of her having the pain he was feeling in his chest. It was unbearable and he was using every little bit of strength in him to make himself look normal.

Ave looked at him doubtfully. "Are you certain you are no longer in pain?" she asked, as she could see his complexion wasn’t back to normal yet, but his expression had no ounce of pain in it as he regarded her with a stern look that seemed like he wasn’t going to allow her to heal him.

"Do I look like someone in pain to you?" He questioned with an amused, arched brow as he moved closer, and without giving her time to reply or react, he pulled her onto his lap where he sat on the floor to hide his pain. He raised his hand and wiped the tears from her cheeks away and then stroked her hair as if to reassure her. "I am fine." He leaned his forehead on hers and breathed in her scent, even just to calm himself from the burning pain.

If Ave wasn’t so guilty about the pain she had caused him a while ago, she would have pushed him away and moved away from him at this moment. But the strings of guilt and the urge to make amends were still eating at her. Thus, she raised her hand and ran her fingers into his thick hair as she massaged his scalp, then ran her hand down to his face where she used her finger to wipe at the bloodstain on the side of his mouth.

"I am sorry..." she muttered as she caressed his cheeks and moved the hair sticking to his sweaty forehead back. "I didn’t know what came over me, one moment it was you and the next moment it was someone else trying to kill me by sucking me dry. I was so scared I acted quickly and used that spell. I really didn’t mean to hurt you intentionally..." she said, her voice filled with remorse and anxiety of ever having to experience such a nightmare while being awake.

Lucian hugged her and rested his tired head on her shoulder as he pulled her body closer to his. He had seen her expression and the fear in her eyes earlier, she had looked so terrified of being bitten. And when she called out that unknown name and not his, he had felt an unfamiliar stab to his chest.

"Who is Roland?" he asked softly before he could stop himself, as the way she had called that name sounded like she wanted him to come to her rescue and save her from him.

Ave was taken aback for a moment. She didn’t know who that was, but the name had come to her mind when she sensed danger. The name had sounded and felt important to her. She didn’t know in what way, but it was like that name belonged to someone important to her who she couldn’t remember. "I don’t know who that is, but the name makes my heart ache in ways I can’t explain..." she muttered, almost in a trance, as she subconsciously rested her own head against Lucian’s shoulder.

Hearing her words and the longing in them for whoever that bastard Roland was, Lucian’s strong hand gripped her hips with possessive strength, his fingers digging into her skin—not enough to cause her pain, but just enough to remind her that he had claimed her without her knowledge. She was his, and he wasn’t letting go or allowing an unknown Roland to come between them.
