Chapter 141: Make amends
Chapter 141: Make amends
Thalia’s gray eyes widened as her head hit his solid chest that felt as hard as a rock against her head. She could hear the sound of his steady heartbeat and how he swore under his breath and attempted to step away from her. However, Thalia acted impulsively and raised her hands to grab the front of his shirt as she moved her head back to look up at him.
Looking at his face up close, where he didn’t blink for several moments at her actions of gripping his front shirt, he only held her in a displeased stare. His eyes, she noticed for the first time, were hazel, but with more yellow and gray than green. They were like cat eyes, angry predatory cat eyes.
Thalia couldn’t help but also notice his handsomeness that stole her breath away and made her heart skip a beat. She had never stood this close to any man before, and her brother made sure of it by warning her that if he ever were to catch her admiring or looking at any man below her class, as she’d always talked about how she wanted to marry someone simple in her childhood, he would kill them and wipe out their entire bloodline.
Not once had she allowed herself to be swayed by the temptation of ever approaching Zane when he was first brought to the palace and would follow the second prince around. She had set her eyes on him since then, and whenever she read a book, she always envisioned herself as the female character and his face as the male. It had become such a habit that whenever she saw him, she wouldn’t be able to recall her teachings about how a princess should never attempt to smile nor speak to someone below her.
Now, being this close to him for the first time after so many years of watching from a distance, she felt her throat clench with some unknown emotions, and her eyes pricked with tears as she wished with everything in her that she wasn’t a princess. Judging from how he was looking at her with so much disdain and disapproval, Thalia didn’t need to be told that he wanted her to let go of his shirt and move away from him, but because she was royalty, he couldn’t say the words out loud.
"Your Highness, if you’d please allow me to step away?" he said with a polite voice, but his hazel eyes, now dark, held no politeness nor kindness. He was scowling down at her so intensely.
"Wh-why do you loathe me so much when I haven’t done anything to you?" she asked softly as she met his eyes without flinching from the daggers thrown out of them.
Zane arched a brow at the princess. Why did he loathe her? He didn’t just loathe her but her entire family and the blood of the Pendragon who had heartlessly taken away his own family and the life he’d once had. If she wasn’t a princess, he would have really pushed her away from him, but remembering his place and where he belonged, he didn’t dare move until she would.
"Your Highness, if someone were to walk in on us like this, it would not only cause a scandal but get you and I in trouble. Please step back and allow me my personal space," he remarked indifferently without answering her question. The last thing Zane wanted was for her brother to come for his neck for something that wasn’t his fault, and if this princess didn’t let go of his shirt and step away, it seemed he would be getting more than just a few lashes of the whip.
"You..." Thalia began to say but didn’t get to finish her words when she heard someone swear savagely from behind her at the entrance of the balcony, and she quickly stepped back and turned to see Prince Lancelot, her husband-to-be, standing there with a goblet of wine in hand, his brown eyes zooming angrily on them. His eyes moved from Zane to Thalia before his wine goblet dropped from his hand, and he walked towards Zane in four, angry purposeful long strides and grabbed his collar.
Before Thalia could say anything, Prince Lance had begun to punch Zane while savagely cursing, "How dare a mere manservant like you touch my woman?! I’ve heard so much about how arrogant you are because you serve the cursed prince; I will show you how to behave properly!" He delivered another punch to Zane’s face that hurt his knuckle instead of Zane’s face, and he cursed under his breath.
Zane, on the other hand, could kill the prince with a single punch on a vital spot, but he didn’t raise his hand. He could barely feel the punch of the prince. He received them without flinching or making a sound. Why? Because he cared about Lucian enough not to do anything that would lead to the prince being blamed for it. If he were to raise his hand, this man would be carried out of here.
Lance, unable to use his hands again as they hurt, kicked him, and he fell back toward the table of food, and everything on the table fell to the floor in ruins, with hot soup spilling on Zane’s torso. Only his eyes flickered, but his expression showed no signs of pain.
Thalia’s eyes widened as she saw the hot soup spill on him. She had been too shocked to move and stop Lance from hitting Zane, as she hadn’t expected anyone to walk onto the balcony while they were here. But seeing this, she recovered quickly and stepped forward to stop Lance before he approached Zane again.
"D-don’t hit him again, Prince Lance!" she cried as she pulled at his hand. "It was my fault that—"
"Enough, Your Highness. I know how softhearted you can be towards every servant, but this man here has crossed the line, and you have allowed him to. It will be my duty to see to it that he gets proper punishment and loses his head. Now step away!" he said through gritted teeth as he glared at the insolent man on the floor, who was now daring to glare back at him as he stood back up to his feet.
When Zane stood at his full height, he was a head taller and more muscular than Lance. When Lance saw that he was approaching him, he blinked repeatedly before he began to step back with a terrified look on his face. "I shall report you to the first prince, and your head shall roll down the board today!" Then he turned and left the balcony.
Thalia ran to follow him to stop him, but when she reached the balcony door, she turned to look back at Zane, whose eyes had darkened as he stared back at her with even more disdain and hate that almost caused her to trip over herself. Clenching the fabric of her dress with her fingers, she ran after Lance and caught up to him just as he was walking up to the royal table, where her brother and the other elder princes from other kingdoms were having a feast.
She grabbed his sleeve hurriedly and stepped in front of him. "Please don’t say anything to my brother; he is going to kill Zane." She pleaded desperately, her eyes filling up with tears.
Lance raised a brow in disbelief and amusement. "It seems I have overlooked something here. Are you having an affair with a servant?" he questioned with his head tilted to the side as if realization had dawned on him. "This is going to be good and bad news to your brother, and I shall break it to him," he said as he attempted to sidestep her to pass, but Thalia tightened her hold on his sleeve.
"I am not having an affair with him. I lost my balance, and he—"
"Took advantage of the situation to touch you, didn’t he? That’s all the more reason I should report him and get him killed. You will be my wife, and I shall not allow any man to disrespect the woman I will marry, not to mention a manservant at that." He flashed her a forced smile and patted her head. In truth, he really didn’t give a damn about the princess, as she wasn’t the kind of woman he liked, but his parents were forcing him to marry her to form an alliance with the Imperial royals. But because he liked superiority, he wanted to see that arrogant manservant of the Cursed Prince punished, and he also wanted to teach this princess a few lessons for something she had done yesterday.
Lance was about to walk past her again when he heard her say, "About yesterday when you wanted me to do that..." She tightened her grip around her dress, as she knew she was about to make the most stupid mistake of her life to save Zane’s life, but she couldn’t allow him to be killed for something that wasn’t his fault. The look he had given her earlier had hurt her more than she could imagine, and she wanted to make amends.
Lance stopped in his tracks as he turned to look at the princess with interest. "Yes?" He urged her to continue as a smile played on his face. "Go on."
"I am willing to do it if you promise me you won’t tell anyone, especially my brother, about what happened on the balcony," she said, trying to fight to keep her panic or think about the consequences that could follow what she was about to agree to.
Lance’s smile broadened as he approached her, then took her hand and pressed his lips against her knuckle. "You have my word, then, Your Highness. After the ceremony, meet me where I took you yesterday."
