Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Quiet Camp

The uneasiness never stopped after Veyla came back, though she didn’t show any signs of betrayal, but you could never be so sure.

But he couldn’t let the uneasiness get the better of him. If he wanted to survive in this cold new world, he needed someone who had lived here or at least had survived here for a long while and she was his only hope on that.

He glanced over as Veyla came back.

"I didn’t find anything reasonable, and the food I found was old and had decayed already," she said, sitting on a stone opposite him.

"At least we can use this place as a shed for the time being, until we are fully recovered," he said, glancing around the place.

"What are we going to do until then?" Veyla asked, resting on the pillar.

"Well, we rest. Is there any other thing we can do at this moment? I haven’t even seen any checkpoints. I’ve just been wandering around the game at this point. I don’t even know what I’m supposed to be chasing after anymore," he said.

She nodded in agreement.

"That’s true. There are no tests, no checkpoints, no competitors, or even a place to compete."

"Well, we won’t know until we keep looking. Maybe we’ll find something that would lead us to the right point," he muttered.

She turned to the gate.

"We sure have to rest up here this night. Wanna head inside?"

"Yes, it looks like it would be cold this night," he said, staring at the grey sky.

They both walked into the building. It wasn’t so big, but it was manageable for shield and comfort.

He glanced around the area—it was decorated with flowers, though they were all wilted now. The end of the room had bunk beds, laying on top of each other.

Looked like where they slept when they occupied the fort. He glanced over to the small compartment that almost hid itself away by the dark lighting.

He walked over and peeped his head into the room. It had utensils, a metal kettle, some decayed ingredients, and livestock, as well as other items that appear in the kitchen.

He opened the makeshift window that was on the end of the wall, and breeze swept in, blowing the dust up his face.

He coughed for a while, then walked out of the room. Outside the room, Veyla already seemed to be making herself comfortable where she laid.

He looked right behind her and noticed a staircase, so he walked over to it and climbed up all the way to the top.

It led to the top of the building, where another stair connected to the fort wall that stood protecting every building within the four walls.

He walked up to the fort wall and rested on it, glancing over the forest as he could see almost everything from there.

He noticed a creature below, but it vanished afterwards. He didn’t bother chasing after it when he was safer within the walls.

"I wish I could see it all one more time," he whispered, his hands in his pocket because of the cold as he stared far off.

He turned, then walked back down the stairs into the building.

Veyla already seemed to have slept off, so he walked up to his own bunk and slept too.

Unlike his normal mornings back on Earth, there was no sun to drift through the window curtains and wake him up.

There was only grey sky and his instincts kicking at him to be on guard against something.

He opened his eyes and glanced over to where Veyla slept, but she wasn’t there anymore.

He flexed his arms and he seemed to be fully recovered compared to the day before. He quickly jumped off the bunk and followed the sorrow thread he picked up.

As he came out from the building, he could now notice two sorrow threads, but they were both calm—didn’t seem to be fighting.

He quickly sprinted to the location of the sorrow thread, and he saw Veyla standing opposite a figure covered with a cloak.

At first, he thought they were conspiring, but then he noticed the uneasiness in Veyla’s body movement, which proved otherwise.

He approached smartly, careful not to be a victim in a betrayal like he read in books and watched in movies.

Veyla noticed him and turned around.

"Oh, you’re finally awake."

He nodded, glancing at the figure opposite her.

"Yeah, I am. But who is he?"

"That’s what I’m here to find out as well," she said, turning back to the figure.

"What do you mean? Haven’t you been conversing for a while?" he asked, turning his head from the figure to Veyla.

"No. I woke up before you and was laying on the bunk bed before I felt his presence and immediately came out here. He says he’s a Cinder, just like you," she explained.

He turned back to the figure, who seemed to pull off his cloak.

"I am Amon, a rogue Cinder who doesn’t bear grace, so I’m not an enemy," he said.

Riven glanced at Veyla, who folded her arms. Then he glanced back at Amon.

"And what did you come here for?" he questioned further.

"I came here because it was once a Cinder stronghold. I am looking for deserted Cinders who need refuge," he said.

"And why should we trust you? This could be a trap to get us into an ambush," Veyla questioned.

"I don’t expect you to trust me, but it’s the least I can do. The camp is at Wild Hollow. It’s the perfect place to find refuge because of its strong holders," he said.

"And you think it’s strong enough to hold back Grace Knights? You realize this place was one of the strongest Cinder mobile strongholds before they lost to the invading knights," she said.

"You do know a lot about knights. You sure you ain’t one?" he muttered, raising an eyebrow.

"Enough of that. Tell us how long it would take to get there," Riven interrupted.

"Don’t tell me you’re planning on believing his words," she asked, folding her arms.

"We have no choice. If he’s a fellow Cinder, then it’s better. We were talking about it yesterday, weren’t we?" he recalled.

She purred, then nodded.

"Fine. Just because you’re going, then I have no choice but to tag along."

"Then it’s settled. But we need to start moving—blight spawns are on their migrating season," he muttered, glancing at the both of them.
