Gu ZhaoChuan leaned against the window of a pitch-black room bathed in moonlight. He held a phone in his hand and dialled Shi Zhong’s number.

Not a moment after, the call connected.

“It’s already three or four in the morning. Why is our Young Master Gu still awake?” A teasing voice came from the other end. But Gu ZhaoChuan ignored his sarcastic tone.

His gaze dropped, and he spoke swiftly.

“Xia GaoWu died in a car crash. But what I didn’t expect… was that the one behind it was actually Bai YongKang! That guy planned such a huge move, and yet he couldn’t even take Bai XingQi down with him? What a miserable mistake.”

As he said this, Gu ZhaoChuan’s eyes turned cold.

He knew he shouldn’t have placed his hopes on a useless good-for-nothing.

Even if the outcome was what he wanted, the process had been far too ugly—and far too dangerous.

“Of course Bai YongKang ended up doing that. Since he couldn’t kill Bai XingQi, he no longer had any value. And the decision to have him kill Xia GaoWu—that was made by my person.”

This person Shi Zhong spoke of had always been someone Gu ZhaoChuan had been trying to find.

That person had been hiding within the Gu family all along, and from the looks of it, held no small status. Even if Bai YongKang managed to escape, he would still have been pushed to go down with Xia GaoWu. That kind of influence was far greater than Gu ZhaoChuan had imagined.

Naturally, Gu ZhaoChuan didn’t want to be Shi Zhong’s pawn. Right now, he had no choice but to find pieces he could use himself—pieces that would become his future leverage.

He had to find that person.

“That man can even manipulate Bai YongKang? From the way Bai YongKang acted at the banquet, he didn’t look like someone who could be easily controlled.”

“Gu ZhaoChuan, that’s what you don’t understand. Sometimes, all it takes is one sentence to make someone throw themselves at your feet. Bai YongKang has always been desperate to achieve his goals—even if it meant killing his own father. That’s why I chose him.”

“Because he’s greedy enough?”

“No—because he’s stupid enough.” Laughter burst from the other end.

“He really thought he could rely on just one person to do everything. But the sad truth is, he was never the star of tonight’s performance. I simply wanted to make certain people understand: apart from me, they have no one they can work with.”

Gu ZhaoChuan’s chest tightened.

At first glance, the man sounded like he was toying with others. But more than that… It felt like a warning aimed at him.

Don’t play games. Don’t get clever.

He remained silent as Shi Zhong continued.

“With how things stand now, Bai XingQi’s ‘Blizzard’ is finished. She was betrayed tonight—it means she’s already isolated and powerless. The Bai family has been wiped out, the Xia family’s head is dead… and the entire capital is now in chaos. What we need now is a third party to step in. As long as we absorb the Xia family’s resources, everything else will fall into place.”

At this point, Gu ZhaoChuan finally understood.

Everything they’d done before—even trying to manipulate HuMing—was just a smokescreen for this man. Shi Zhong hadn’t cared about individuals at all. He simply wanted to throw the entire capital into disorder—then consume it piece by piece.

Realizing that made Gu ZhaoChuan feel a chill. Bringing this man down… was going to be far harder than he had imagined.

“What do I need to do next?”

“Do? No, you don’t have to do anything. Just stay alive in the Gu family. Watch silently as I reshape this entire city. And when the time comes—I’ll give you exactly what you want.”

He was still pulling Gu ZhaoChuan’s strings like a puppet master.

Round and round, Gu ZhaoChuan found himself back where he started—waiting for the next order.

He clenched his fists tightly, swallowing his rage.

He had thought his own calculations ran deep. But now it was clear—Shi Zhong had been several moves ahead all along.

This outcome really was... just as he’d planned.

Gu ZhaoChuan drew in a deep breath, and suddenly, an image of HuMing flashed through his mind.

HuMing had been absent the entire evening. Even when he’d been kidnapped, he managed to hide out in a bathroom and ride it through.

Gu ZhaoChuan couldn’t help but feel a flicker of hope.

If HuMing could somehow turn this around—would that mean he might finally be free of Shi Zhong?

And more importantly… could he finally gather everything into his own hands?

“HuMing… you must have some kind of plan, right? Don’t disappoint me…” Gu ZhaoChuan murmured.

He never thought the day would come when he’d hope HuMing would clean up this mess. That guy was supposed to be his mortal enemy.

Gu ZhaoChuan slowly shut his eyes and collapsed onto the bed.

By the time Gu WeiYi returned home, his older brother was already waiting for him in the main hall.

All the servants in the house had stayed up. They’d heard about what happened tonight and were anxiously awaiting their return.

Gu WeiJun sent the servants away to rest. Just then, his younger brother came through the door.

He immediately stepped up, checking him for injuries without a word. Gu WeiYi didn’t resist, letting his brother fuss over him as he quietly asked:

“Big brother, are the kids asleep?”

“They’ve gone back to their rooms, but whether they’re asleep, I can’t say for sure. Though I do know HuMing hasn’t returned yet. I heard something serious happened on his end. Bai YongKang… killed Xia GaoWu?”

Gu WeiJun frowned deeply. Just earlier, he’d been chatting with Xia GaoWu at the banquet. He’d even heard that Xia’s daughter was interested in HuMing and wanted to arrange a dinner together.

And now this?

Gu WeiYi glanced around, then lowered his voice.

“I snatched Bai YongKang from Bai XingQi. He drove into Xia GaoWu because Shi Zhong ordered him to. At first he was scared of dying, but I revealed my identity and promised he’d live. That convinced him.”

“You mean… he believed you were one of Shi Zhong’s people, so he agreed to get in your car and kill Xia GaoWu?”

“He was that stupid. That’s exactly the kind of fool Shi Zhong wanted. That’s how he made all this happen. As for Xia GaoWu—he’s probably with HuMing by now.” Gu WeiYi rubbed the corner of his eye. He wasn’t sure if he could count this as having personally killed Bai YongKang. But things getting to this point had far exceeded his expectations.

The rest… was up to HuMing.

“Oh, and big brother… have you thought about what might have happened on Bai XingQi’s end tonight?” Gu WeiYi raised a crucial question.
