Chapter 73: 072 Do Right

Tian Xinhua saw He Chengsi, who was going to school with them, and snorted coldly, ignoring him completely. He took Tian Sisi’s small hand and walked in front, leaving He Chengsi scornful of this pretty-faced Tian Xinhua. Seeing his own wife (in He Chengsi’s heart, Tian Sisi had always been his wife) being pulled away by the pretty-faced guy, He Chengsi hurriedly stepped forward and dragged Tian Sisi back.

"Sisi is my sister, and I’ll be the one taking her to school," He Chengsi declared loudly, chest puffed out, claiming ownership over his "wife."

Tian Xinhua laughed mockingly in his anger, "I wasn’t aware when Ah Nan became a member of the He Family. What relation do you have with her? Shameless!"

"You’re the shameless one, a sneaky little people. Anyway, Sisi is my sister," He Chengsi felt extremely bitter inside. Daddy had said not to reveal Sisi’s true identity, making it so he couldn’t openly recognize his sister and was outdone by this tricky pretty-face!

"Hmph! Whose fault is it if you don’t have brains? You’ve already lost to me and still want to compete for Sisi? Go stand over there!" Tian Xinhua forcefully yanked Tian Sisi back.

Fuelled by Tian Xinhua’s arrogance, He Chengsi’s face turned red and his neck swelled. He threw his schoolbag on the ground and yelled, "Who’s the defeated? Let’s have another match to see who’s better!"

"You think I’ll compete just because you say so? I don’t feel like exerting myself today. I’ll play with you some other day when I’m in a good mood!" Tian Xinhua sneered and pulled Tian Sisi to move forward.

He Chengsi was stupefied by Tian Xinhua’s contemptuous attitude. How could there be a man who wouldn’t accept a challenge? "You coward, you’re just afraid of losing to me, aren’t you?"

"Childish! You’re still a baby at the breast, aren’t you?" Tian Xinhua retorted without looking back.

Tian Sisi couldn’t help but mourn for He Chengsi. Tian Xinhua’s venomous tongue was comparable to that of a cobra. How could this foolish boy He Chengsi outtalk Tian Xinhua? He was clearly asking for trouble.

"Brother He, let’s hurry to school, okay? Don’t be angry!"

He Chengsi, who had been so angry that he was practically panting, was immediately soothed by Tian Sisi’s gentle and soft-spoken comfort, smiling from ear to ear, and obediently picked up his schoolbag to follow. This turned the tables and made Tian Xinhua uncomfortable. With a straight face and silent, Tian Sisi sighed and had to coax Tian Xinhua. Unlike He Chengsi, Tian Xinhua was not so easily placated—it took a lot of sweet talk from Tian Sisi to finally bring a smile to Tian Xinhua’s face.

Tian Qinghua, Jianguo, and Donghua had wisely kept their distance from the very start of the conflict. Munching on biscuits, they watched the drama unfold. Tian Qinghua, seeing his fifth brother throwing a tantrum, opened his mouth wide in surprise, "I never thought Fifth Brother could be so childish!"

Jianguo and Donghua deeply agreed. In their minds, Tian Xinhua was someone who held the same status as an adult. However, after this incident, Tian Xinhua promptly transitioned from being an adult to a brother in their eyes.

Because He Chengsi had a foundation laid down by He Xuewen, Principal Luo put him in Tian Sisi’s third-grade class after assessing his level. This made Tian Xinhua jealous for quite a while, but He Chengsi was overjoyed. Suddenly, he found studying quite enjoyable—being able to be with his ’wife’ every day was wonderful!

At school, they did not see Zhong Yuying, presumably because Zhong Liangcai wouldn’t let her study anymore. Tian Sisi felt quite regretful; she had planned to bully Zhong Yuying well at school and avenge the day she was pushed into a pit. Now that Zhong Yuying was absent, she had no choice but to drop the idea. However, what Tian Sisi didn’t know was that Tian Xinhua, He Chengsi, and the others from Donghua Jian Country had already avenged her.

These days, Zhong Yuying either stumbled and fell while walking (courtesy of He Chengsi), or was chased and bitten by dogs (enticed by Donghua Jian Country’s tempting treats, Big Yellow would do anything mean), or was cursed and pelted with small stones by the village kids (Tian Xinhua used candy to instigate the children). In short, Zhong Yuying’s life had been fraught with fear these past few days. Not only did she have to do the heavy housework, but she also endured the villagers’ disdainful looks. Most importantly, she couldn’t continue her studies—this was the most severe blow for Zhong Yuying, who was determined to leave Yuequan Village.

In the battle against Zhong Yuying, Jianguo and He Chengsi deepened their revolutionary friendship. To Jianguo, the fact that He Chengsi could, just like him, help Sister Sisi deal with the scoundrel meant he couldn’t be a crook. Most importantly, the Old Man clearly stated that he and his son were not bad people. Thus, after clearing up the misunderstanding, Jianguo and He Chengsi became close as brothers, proving the saying that you don’t really know someone until you’ve fought them.

At the proactive request of He Chengsi, he was assigned to the same desk as Tian Sisi. Tian Sisi didn’t really care; her previous deskmate was a boy from Jinkeng Village named Jin Duofu. His family’s conditions seemed decent – at least his clothes were thick cotton-padded jackets. Though they had patches, it was common for children’s clothes to bear patches during that era.

Generally, a set of new clothes would be worn by the eldest, then passed down to the second child, then to the third, and so on, until the last one. By the end, the clothes would have layers upon layers of patches and no longer resemble their original appearance. Being the eldest had its perks in those days; at least they got to wear new clothes, unlike the youngest, who always wore old ones.

Jin Duofu, the boy with a habit that Tian Sisi found utterly disgusting – eating his snot – was quite boisterous, but in front of Tian Sisi, he became a shy little boy, sticking strictly to his one-third of the desk space, not daring to overstep. That wouldn’t have been an issue, but what drove Tian Sisi to her limit was witnessing Jin Duofu’s vile habit. Except for the hottest days of the summer, he always had two long snot trails hanging from his nose, perpetually sniffling them back in and out. Whenever he couldn’t control the flow, he’d just slurp it up with a noise and smack his lips indulgently. At those moments, Tian Sisi felt so nauseous that she struggled to hold back an urge to yell at him.

That’s why, as soon as He Chengsi started school, Tian Sisi cleverly came up with an idea to get rid of Jin Duofu from her desk. If she had to continue sitting with him, she couldn’t guarantee she wouldn’t beat him up. It was just too disgusting!

Jin Duofu felt wronged when he was switched out. He had sat with Tian Sisi for almost half a term, and the school’s boys were so envious of him. Even when talking about it at home, his siblings were so jealous that his status in the family skyrocketed. He wasn’t Little Five Jin Duofu anymore; he was Shanghai Sister’s Deskmate Jin Duofu. What a nice ring it had to it, but after today, he would revert to being just Little Five Jin Duofu again.

Seeing the downhearted Jin Duofu, Tian Sisi felt somewhat guilty. To be honest, if it weren’t for his disgusting habit, he would have been a very good deskmate. In reality, that habit only seemed disgusting to Tian Sisi. Half of the boys in the class had two Yellow Rivers dangling from their noses. It wasn’t fair to blame Jin Duofu for poor hygiene when all the children were brought up that way.

Once switched, Jin Duofu ended up behind Tian Sisi, sitting with Zhong Juying. Before, no one in the class wanted to sit with her because of her sloppy clothes, but now that she was dressed neatly and tidied up a bit, she transformed into a lovely little girl and wasn’t as ostracized as before.

Therefore, Jin Duofu had no issue sitting with Zhong Juying. Unlike other students, he harbored no prejudice against her wealthier background. He moved back and even shared a smile with Zhong Juying, but he was not as well-behaved as he had been with Tian Sisi. He not only took up two-thirds of the desk space, but also scattered his books and stationery across to Zhong Juying’s side. Zhong Juying, being meek, didn’t say a word and moved her stool a bit to the outside.

Tian Sisi couldn’t stand by watching this happen. She signaled to Jin Duofu and whispered, "Do you want some candy?"

"Yes!" Jin Duofu nodded vigorously, sniffing his nose—everyone loves candy.

"Then tidy up your desk; I’m uncomfortable seeing it so messy." Tian Sisi had to come up with this excuse, as it wouldn’t be right to appear blatantly biased towards Zhong Juying.

Jin Duofu was quick-witted and soon understood Tian Sisi’s intent. He glanced at Zhong Juying, and with a detailed look, his cheeks flushed; he hadn’t realized that the usually unkempt Zhong Juying could look so pretty. Boys naturally feel affection and sympathy for beautiful girls, and Jin Duofu felt extremely ashamed when he thought about his overbearing behavior just moments ago.

He quickly rearranged his books and stationery, leaving Zhong Juying somewhat at a loss. To her, Jin Duofu’s previous behavior wasn’t a big deal, especially compared to other classmates who were cold and hostile towards her – Jin Duofu was much better.
