Chapter 57: 057 Accident
Tian Sisi chuckled and put the scissors back into the basket, wiped off the grass juice on her hands with a handkerchief, then took out a few fruit candies from her pocket and stuffed one into the mouths of each of the four including Zhong Meiying, "Then I won’t be polite, this is your labor fee, you’d better share more with me later!"
"No problem, we guarantee to give you more." Zhong Anmei said very frankly with the candy in her mouth.
Tian Sisi was indeed not keen on picking more Qingming grass anymore. It was truly bothersome to prepare everything herself when good things are ready-made. She could use this as an excuse to give them a few more Qingming Cakes later on. She didn’t mind helping out friends with whom she clicked personality-wise.
Zhong Yuying, squatting in a distant place, saw Tian Sisi and Zhong Meiying, along with Zhong Anmei, getting along harmoniously, laughing and joking, and envy appeared in her eyes. In the past, she was the one who enjoyed these privileges—the food from Tian Sisi, and even the new head flowers she wore. But now, all of that was gone. At home, without Tian Sisi’s care, her status had plummeted, and she had more and more chores to do. The more she thought about it, the more she couldn’t accept it. Zhong Yuying watched Tian Sisi with a hidden and resentful gaze.
Tian Sisi was completely unaware of these sentiments. She wanted to go to another hillside to gather peach blossoms so that she could brew peach blossom wine next time. Last time, she saw that there were many wild peach trees in that valley, and the huge swath of pink peach blossoms seemed like a fairyland.
Zhong Yuying saw Tian Sisi was alone and cautiously moved her body step by step, slowly reaching the entrance of the hillside. Zhong Yuying stood up, took advantage of the fact that no one was paying attention, and descended the hillside. Tian Sisi was collecting peach blossoms under a peach tree with a cloth bag. Of course, most of the peach blossoms had been put into her Space; those outside were just a cover.
"Sisi, are you picking peach blossoms? Let me do it for you." It turns out that Zhong Yuying hadn’t given up. In Yuequan Village, finding someone like Tian Sisi who wasn’t stingy and was easy to deceive was extremely difficult, so she had to focus on Tian Sisi again.
Tian Sisi furrowed her brows. Why couldn’t Zhong Yuying leave her alone? She turned around and said coldly, "No need, I can pick them myself. Zhong Yuying, can’t you understand what people say? I’ve already said I don’t want to be friends with you, so why do you keep bothering me?"
"Sisi, weren’t we very good friends before? Why have you suddenly become like this? Where did I do wrong? Tell me, and I’ll change, isn’t that enough?" Even though full of secret resentment, Zhong Yuying kept a weak exterior and begged with a lowered voice.
"There’s no need, I simply don’t want to be friends with you anymore, Zhong Yuying. Please don’t keep making these expressions in front of me, it’s annoying." After saying this, Tian Sisi turned her back, intending to pick peach blossoms under another tree.
Faced with disappointment and then despair, Zhong Yuying’s face twisted drastically. She seemed to see her own future, just like her big sister, working non-stop every day, eventually marrying a rough man, bearing children, and becoming an old woman before turning thirty. No, she didn’t want to become such a person. Tian Sisi, why do you want to ruin my life?
Filled with hatred, Zhong Yuying’s head spun, and she rushed toward Tian Sisi. With a forceful push, Tian Sisi tumbled down into the valley. Below the valley was a deep pit which the people of Yuequan Village called the "tiger pit," alleged to house tigers. Falling into it meant no escape. So every time the people from Yuequan Village passed this valley, they would avoid this pit from afar. But Tian Sisi didn’t know this; how could she know that behind the beautiful peach blossom forest lay hidden traps?
Standing above the hillside, Zhong Yuying, trembling, looked down. The pit’s entrance was covered by wild grass, and one couldn’t tell that someone had just rolled in. She showed a malicious smile towards the bottom, "Tian Sisi, since you refuse to be friends with me, then you can go make friends with ghosts in hell."
It has to be said that Zhong Yuying’s psychological quality was undoubtedly top-notch. Having just committed an act akin to murder, she could still maintain such composure. Zhong Yuying tidied her hair, pretending to have returned from relieving herself, and hurriedly walked out, continuing to squat in her original place to pick Qingming grass, talking to her companions from time to time. However, being still young after all, her hands didn’t stop trembling as she cut the Qingming grass, and her complexion was somewhat pale.
"Yuying, what’s wrong with you? Are you feeling unwell?" The girl beside Zhong Yuying asked, puzzled.
"No, I just got frightened. When I went to relieve myself a moment ago, I saw a four-legged snake crawling across my foot, and it gave me quite a shock," Zhong Yuying’s heart stuttered as she hurriedly explained with a forced smile.
"Four-legged snakes are the most revolting. I saw one in my home’s courtyard once and it scared me so much I jumped," the girl believed her and felt a shared fright, discussing with Zhong Yuying the horror of four-legged snakes.
Tian Sisi was pushed so suddenly by Zhong Yuying that she fell down instantly. By the time she realized she should enter the Space, her butt had already heavily hit the ground. Aiyo, Tian Sisi cried out in pain. The mouth of the pit was covered by vines and wild grass, and though it was broad daylight, it was pitch-black inside, so dark that you couldn’t see your hand in front of you. She hurriedly took a flashlight out of the Space and switched it on.
The pit was shaped like a gourd, narrow at the top and wider at the bottom; it must not have been very deep, or else Tian Sisi’s fall would have been more than just a sore butt—she wouldn’t have escaped with her life. Even so, Tian Sisi’s fall was quite bad. She looked around the large pit; thankfully, it was quite clean without any messy things around. Otherwise, she might not have died from the fall but would have been disgusted to death.
Having calmed herself down, Tian Sisi let out a bitter laugh. She had really been too careless, knowing full well that Zhong Yuying harbored ill intentions and yet she had boldly exposed her back. It was really asking for trouble. But Zhong Yuying didn’t look like someone merciful. Then why in her previous life did the original owner only lose her property and not her life?
Tian Sisi didn’t know that in her previous life, Tian Zhaodi had survived because of her worthless ex-husband who, although a scumbag, wasn’t completely bad. He had sternly warned Zhong Yuying that if she harmed Tian Zhaodi’s life, he would never marry Zhong Yuying. That’s why Zhong Yuying had spared Tian Zhaodi.
Zhong Yuying, you bastard, hmph, just wait until I get out and see how I deal with you! Tian Sisi remembered this huge loss and vowed to pay it back ten-fold in the future. But for now, she still needed to get out. The pit wasn’t deep; surely someone could hear her if she called for help?
But although the pit wasn’t deep, it was quite a distance from where Zhong Meiying and the others were picking Qingming grass. And because the mouth of the pit was densely covered with wild grass, her voice was much weakened. So, despite Tian Sisi’s screams, Zhong Meiying and the others heard nothing. It was only after a while that Zhong Juying noticed Tian Sisi hadn’t returned and took Zhong Anmei to the hollow to search, but they didn’t find anyone.
Now they were all panicking. Where had Tian Sisi gone? Zhong Meiying, Zhong Juying, Zhong Anmei, and Zhong Wan Hua were all anxiously at a loss. They and the other girls searched the entire valley but found no trace of Tian Sisi. Zhong Juying was so anxious she was about to cry, but Zhong Anmei was a bit more level-headed. She told Zhong Meiying to run to the Tian Family to pass the message, while they stayed on the mountain to continue searching.
Zhong Yuying pretended to be anxious and joined the search crowd, but she felt a secret thrill. No one would know that Tian Sisi was in the tiger pit. By now, Tian Sisi would probably have run out of breath. The Old Man and Granny Zhao hurried over after receiving the news, and since everyone else was out working, the Old Man hadn’t asked Granny Zhao to inform them. He wanted to check the situation first; in his view, Ah Nan shouldn’t have encountered any trouble—with Lord Bai Yuan watching over her.
Drawing on his skills from his scouting days, the Old Man carefully inspected the terrain and found two sets of footprints in the hollow. One was smaller, likely Ah Nan’s, and the other was a bit larger, the owner unknown.
"Who else came to this valley just now?" the Old Man asked with authority. His voice wasn’t loud, but none of the young girls dared to be mischievous.
"I know, Zhong Yuying went there. She had just been there to relieve herself," a girl said quietly, the same girl who had discussed four-legged snakes with Zhong Yuying earlier. Zhong Yuying shot a resentful look at the girl; not a single good thing in this world.
She took a deep breath and stepped forward calmly, "I only went there to relieve myself. I saw Tian Sisi picking peach blossoms and just greeted her and exchanged a few words before coming back."
Zhong Yuying boldly stared into the Old Man’s eyes, not flinching in the slightest. Just as she thought she could no longer hold on, the Old Man turned his head to look elsewhere. Zhong Yuying’s back was soaked through, cold and clammy.
