Chapter 54: 054 Mysterious Man
The plump waiter was taken aback; their restaurant only steamed thirty pork buns in total each day, and they had not even opened for business yet. She had not expected this little girl to buy them all up in one go. Whose daughter was she? Why would she carry so much money with her?
Nevertheless, she quickly gave Tian Sisi the change and wrapped up the buns in paper, all the while smiling and reminding her to be careful of the heat. In her view, this little girl must come from a family that was either rich or noble; her parents certainly must be remarkable people, and therefore, she should be treated with great care.
Right there and then, Tian Sisi handed four buns to Donghua and urged them to eat quickly. Seeing that Tian Sisi wasn’t eating, Jianguo would not eat either. Donghua then said, "Brother Jianguo, you eat first. My sister doesn’t like to eat pork buns; she didn’t eat them last time either."
Who doesn’t like to eat pork buns? Jianguo didn’t believe it. Tian Sisi had no choice but to take a bite from the bun in his hand. The bun was as filling as always, greasy and rich. Seeing Tian Sisi’s expression, Jianguo truly believed that she didn’t like pork buns and started to eat in big bites. It was his first time eating a pork bun, and it was so delicious!
At that moment, a deep and clear male voice rang out, "Waiter, ten pork buns, please."
Tian Sisi, who was about to leave, heard the voice and looked up. The man was in his thirties, tall and lean, with a gentle appearance akin to polished jade. Dressed in a clean and tidy Zhongshan suit, he looked even more handsome and striking. However, his face was somewhat pale, and he occasionally let out a light cough, suggesting his health wasn’t all that great.
The plump waitress immediately felt her heart pounding upon seeing such a graceful gentleman. Oh my, where did this handsome man come from? He’s even more good-looking than a movie star! Hearing that he wanted to buy pork buns, she regretfully said, "I’m sorry, but a little girl just bought all the pork buns not long ago."
"There, that little girl bought them," said the plump waitress as she excitedly pointed towards Tian Sisi who had not left yet.
The man looked over at Tian Sisi and was suddenly taken aback. She looked so familiar! Could it be her?
Tian Sisi also felt that this man was indeed quite extraordinary, perfectly embodying the phrase "standing noble like an orchid or a jade tree, smiling like the bright moon embracing the heart". Most importantly, she felt that the man seemed very familiar, as if she had seen him somewhere before.
"Daddy, what’s wrong?" asked a teenage boy beside the man. The boy was tall and sturdy, with a robust and tiger-like vigor, looking quite adorable.
Only then did the man snap out of it, apologizing to Tian Sisi with a smile. He had been so rude just now, staring at the little girl for such a long time. Tian Sisi didn’t mind and nodded to the man before pulling her younger brothers away and leaving.
The man watched Tian Sisi’s retreating figure and became lost in thought again. She looked even more like her from the back. He covered his mouth to cough a few times, his eyebrows slightly furrowed, eliciting sympathy from the plump waitress – it was as if the heavens envied a beautiful woman.
Turning around, the man asked with a faint smile, "Which family is that little girl from? You don’t see many girls as pretty and stylish as her in this little town."
The plump waitress was eager to talk more with the man and immediately replied, "Exactly. She was able to buy thirty pork buns in one breath, definitely not something ordinary families can afford. However, her family doesn’t seem to be from the town; they’re probably from a village somewhere. Last time she came to buy buns, there was a man with her who appeared to be her Daddy. Those few boys seemed to be her brothers."
The man chatted with the plump waitress a bit more to get a good understanding of Wangjiazhen. The boy by his side urged him, "Daddy, I’m so hungry."
"It’s my fault. I got so caught up in chatting that I forgot to buy food," said the man. "Waiter, two bowls of shredded pork noodles, please." He lovingly tousled the boy’s hair, led him into the restaurant, and picked a seat directly facing the door, which conveniently allowed him to observe the Supply and Marketing Cooperative across. He had just seen that little girl taking her four brothers into the Supply and Marketing Cooperative.
The shredded pork noodles were quickly served, the portion was generous, and the pork was notably plentiful—it seemed that the chubby waiter had given them a bit extra. The man nodded and smiled his thanks to the waiter, which caused the waiter to blush with a hint of embarrassment, yet strangely enough, also added a touch of charm to his demeanour.
The boy must have been terribly hungry, as he took the bowl and started devouring the noodles, not afraid of burning his mouth at all. Seeing this, the man picked the pork from his own bowl to give to the boy and told him to eat slower. The man himself started eating with his chopsticks in a calm and graceful manner, a delightful sight to see.
The boy had a great appetite and soon finished the bowl of noodles. The man ordered another for him. Having consumed two bowls of noodles and not leaving a drop of the soup, the boy burped contentedly and wiped his mouth with his sleeve.
"Chengsi, how did I teach you? You must not wipe your mouth with your sleeve. Didn’t I buy you a handkerchief?" the man frowned.
"Daddy, handkerchiefs are for women. I am a man, how can I do something like a woman!" Chengsi, the boy, argued assertively.
The man chuckled, not insisting that his son must use a handkerchief. Instead, he took out a blue checked handkerchief from the right pocket of his jacket and gently wiped his lips. Chengsi laughed sheepishly and said ingratiatingly, "Of course, except for Daddy. In this world, only Daddy can use a handkerchief without looking like a woman."
The man gave his son a look and pulled out one yuan from the black leather bag he was carrying. The shredded pork noodles were twenty-eight cents a bowl, so three bowls cost eighty-four cents in total. He received sixteen cents in change from the chubby waiter, put it in the bag, and walked away. The man had beautiful hands, with long, well-manicured fingers and clean nails, unlike many men whose nails were often dirty. If it were in the future, such hands would be considered those of an artist.
Seeing the man’s immaculate hands, the chubby waiter looked at his own chubby, pockmarked hands and felt shamed. He avoided eye contact as he gave the change to the man, who smiled, said "See you" to him, and left with his son.
Tian Sisi bought a lot of things at the Supply and Marketing Cooperative—biscuits, cigarettes, kerosene, batteries, soy sauce, vinegar, and more—all packed into a basket. Wang Qiuyang helped her pack each item and even gave her a few new hair ornaments from the Cooperative for her to wear. Without hesitation, Sisi accepted them and took out a piece of meat, about two jin, secretly giving it to Wang Qiuyang, pretending it was from Granny. Qiuyang believed her and joyfully accepted the meat.
Zhong Fugao arrived chugging along in his tractor. Qiuyang helped Sisi get her basket onto the tractor and asked Uncle Fugao to watch over the children, then returned to the Cooperative. Sisi took out five meat buns from the basket, wrapped them in paper, and handed them to Uncle Fugao, "Here, Uncle Fugao, some snacks for you."
Zhong Fugao was surprised to see five big white meat buns, still warm. He panicked and tried to give them back to Sisi, "Ah Nan, I can’t take things from a child. You should eat the buns yourself."
"We’ve already eaten, these were set aside especially for Uncle Fugao. If you don’t eat them, we won’t ride on Uncle Fugao’s tractor again," Sisi pouted and feigned unhappiness.
After several refusals, Uncle Fugao finally gave in to Sisi’s cajoling and started eating a bun. The greasy filling was so fragrant it nearly brought tears to his eyes—it had been so many years since he had tasted such delicious meat buns. Fugao finished one quickly, fighting the urge to have another, and tucked the remaining four buns under the seat cushion to bring home to his family.
Fugao started the tractor and was about to drive back when he heard someone calling from behind, "Comrade, wait, my son and I need to go to Luoling Village. I heard you’re heading to Yuequan Village, could you give us a lift?"
The caller was the handsome man they had encountered earlier in the restaurant. In these times, people were very kind-hearted, and it was a common courtesy to give someone a lift on the road. Fugao nodded and let father and son onto the tractor. The man greeted Sisi with a smile and his refined voice spoke, "Little girl, we meet again, what a coincidence."
"It is indeed a coincidence, uncle, do you come from Luoling Village?" Sisi couldn’t understand why she felt so warm towards this man, it was as if she had known him, yet she was certain she had never met him before!
PS: Who is this man? Has anyone guessed? Thanks to Xingyu Fengxi, Wu Gu Girl, thanks to Miao Xiao Ni, Mimoca, and other girls for their support!
