Chapter 168: 161 Little Thoughts
After dinner, He Xuewen said his goodbyes and left, carrying two bags of food which were fried spring rolls and lion’s head meatballs, both favorites of Tian Sisi. Niu Guipi had already driven the tractor from the village and was waiting at the door.
The tractor was naturally much faster than a bicycle, and it took just over an hour to arrive. Since it was getting late, He Xuewen didn’t ask Niu Guipi to stay for long. After loading two jars of liquor onto the vehicle, he sent him on his way home.
It was after eight o’clock when Niu Guipi got home. The Niu family were all sitting in the living room, seemingly waiting for him. Once Niu Guipi put down the two jars of liquor, Deng Yuxiu couldn’t wait to ask, "Guipi, did you sit for a while at He Xuewen’s house?"
"I did, Uncle He was quite polite. He even gave me two jars of liquor, said they were for great-grandpa and Daddy to drink."
Niu Guipi’s words had Niu Sanxian and Niu Wuwei nodding continuously. Niu Guipi then added, "Uncle He’s home is really beautiful, it looks like a painting from the outside. The decorations inside are all high-end. Sis-in-law, I think they’re much fancier than the stuff at your brother’s place."
Niu Hujiao’s sister-in-law, whose brother is a factory director at a machinery plant and considered to be top-notch in Sui City, often liked to show off in front of them and didn’t think highly of her sister’s family.
Niu Hujiao gave his brother a glance while Deng Yuxiu laughed happily, stood up and called out, "Alright, alright, you all have to work tomorrow. Time to go to bed."
Niu Sanxian washed up and clambered into bed, closing his eyes ready to sleep when Deng Yuxiu slapped him and asked, "Sanxian, what do you think of He Xuewen?"
"Mr. He is good, of course. He has integrity, is generous, pretty good," Niu Sanxian honestly replied.
"I also think he’s quite good, especially his looks are truly handsome, just looking at him feels so pleasant, tch, tch, how can there be someone this beautiful in the world! I thought such people were only in operas!"
The more Niu Sanxian listened, the more upset he felt, a sourness welling up inside him, "Are you in heat? You’re an old lady acting like a young girl, shameless! Besides, what’s the use of good looks? Can you eat them like rice or dishes?"
Deng Yuxiu rolled her eyes at her husband and teased, "What are you jealous for? It’s your daughter who’s in heat. Haven’t you noticed she’s been acting strange recently, not even wanting to eat or drink, but today when she saw He Xuewen, she perked right up. Do you think Guiyuan and He Xuewen would make a good match?"
"No way, absolutely not, there’s a generational gap! He Xuewen is my brother; Guiyuan would have to call him uncle," Niu Sanxian firmly rejected.
"What brother? Could your father have sired a son as handsome as He Xuewen? It’s just a casual title, can’t you just change it next time?"
Deng Yuxiu was indifferent, they weren’t even related by blood, what’s there to be afraid of? Seeing his wife so serious, Niu Sanxian worried that she had really set her heart on it and added hastily:
"It really won’t work. He Xuewen is already 33, and our Guiyuan is only eighteen. In the past, he could have been Guiyuan’s father."
Deng Yuxiu was also startled; she hadn’t expected He Xuewen to actually be 33, he certainly didn’t look it. She was inclined to give up the thought, but then she considered her daughter’s listless state and how she really fancied having such a handsome son-in-law to show off. Biting her lip, she said:
"It doesn’t matter, anyway, He Xuewen looks to be in his twenties. If the two of you walk outside, everyone will definitely think you are the father, and He Xuewen is the son."
"Ah, woman, why can’t you be reasoned with? I don’t agree no matter what. Besides, he already has a wife and child, so stop your wishful thinking."
"Didn’t you hear He Xuewen say that his wife and child have gone missing? The girl who came today is his adopted goddaughter, I’ve already checked."
Deng Yuxiu was very pleased with herself; if He Xuewen had children, she wouldn’t be willing to marry her daughter off to him.
Niu Sanxian was at a loss for words, and after struggling for a while, he finally had a spark of insight, "We might as well stop arguing here. We have no idea what Mr. He is really thinking; you shouldn’t get ahead of yourself. Who knows? Maybe Mr. He won’t even fancy our girl!"
"Why wouldn’t he fancy Guiyuan? She’s an unmarried young woman and so much younger than him. Why wouldn’t he be interested?" Deng Yuxiu was indignant.
"Why not? Just because he’s the heir to He Family Wine, do you know what his family background was? They lived in Western-style houses, drove Western-style cars, and wore Western attire. What about us? We’re just ordinary folks. With Guiyuan being so simple-minded, if she really married into that kind of family, do you think she’d have a good life?"
Niu Sanxian became more fluent as he spoke, "Even if they’ve fallen on hard times now, they aren’t short of money. There’s a saying that even a dilapidated boat has three pounds of nails! Besides, I’m not looking down on our girl, but Guiyuan’s appearance is just too different from theirs. He Xuewen and us are not from the same world. Just calm down, will you?"
Although Deng Yuxiu was dissatisfied, she had to admit that her husband made sense. Although as a mother she would never belittle her own daughter, it was true that Guiyuan’s appearance did not really match He Xuewen. Thinking of this made her angry again.
"It’s all your fault. If you hadn’t been giving Guiyuan so much meat to eat back then, would she have ended up like this? Guiyuan takes after me in looks, if it weren’t for all that weight, she would definitely be a beautiful girl."
"Ow, why is it my fault again? When I was cooking the meat back then, why didn’t you stop me? You ate even more than Guiyuan," he countered.
Niu Sanxian felt utterly wronged. In other homes, when children don’t get to eat meat, wives blame their husbands for not being capable. Yet in his home, when his child does get to eat meat, he still gets scolded. There is no justice!
"Just quit daydreaming, and settle down to find Guiyuan a reliable and capable young man nearby. We’re commoners, so we should live a commoner’s life. Stop always thinking about those unrealistic things."
Niu Sanxian earnestly advised his wife. Sigh, his wife was good in every way, it’s just that sometimes she had wild and impractical fantasies, and he needed to keep an eye on her from time to time, otherwise, who knows where her thoughts might drift off to?
Talking about Tian Xinhua, after he got home, he was restless and couldn’t sit still. He simply jumped up from bed and went to find the Old Man, who was enjoying the cool in the courtyard. Seeing that it was Tian Xinhua who came over, he quickly motioned for him to sit down.
Tian Xinhua didn’t feel like sitting; he dragged the Old Man to go for a walk outside. They walked until they reached a secluded spot before he said, "Great-grandpa, I’ve discovered something." Being young, the first thing Tian Xinhua thought to do was to discuss it with the Old Man.
"What is it?" The Old Man gently patted his grandnephew’s shoulder, indicating for him to take it slow.
"I think there’s something more to the relationship between Uncle He and Ah Nan. Uncle He’s missing biological daughter is very likely to be Ah Nan."
Tian Xinhua bit his lip and voiced his suspicions. The Old Man was taken aback, not expecting Xinhua’s senses to be so sharp that he’d uncover this secret.
Seeing that the Old Man wasn’t as shocked as he had anticipated, Tian Xinhua was astonished and asked, "Great-grandpa, did you already know?"
The Old Man nodded and said seriously, "Now that you know, just keep it in your heart and don’t tell a second person. Originally, Uncle He and I planned to disclose this secret when the world became peaceful again, but I didn’t expect that you, you little rascal, would discover it."
The Old Man felt somewhat gratified and admonished him, "Don’t show any signs of knowing in front of your Uncle He, behave as usual. Uncle He’s identity is somewhat sensitive, and if it’s not handled properly, I’m afraid it could bring danger to Ah Nan."
Then, the Old Man briefly explained He Xuewen’s background to Tian Xinhua. At the end of the conversation, he reiterated his warning to make absolutely sure that Tian Xinhua wouldn’t speak to anyone else about it. Tian Xinhua was extremely shocked and agreed in a daze.
Once back at home, Tian Xinhua tossed and turned in bed, astounded that Ah Nan was truly the successor of a brewing dynasty. Where did all her brewing knowledge come from? Was it innate? And what about all the mysterious things about Ah Nan, are they all related to Uncle He?(To be continued.
