Chapter 155: 148 Accepting Fate
Tian Sisi quietly pulled Weiguo outside to the courtyard; the little guy looked spirited and his clothes were neat and clean. His cheeks were still chubby, which put Tian Sisi at ease. It seemed that Weiguo was doing well at home.
"Weiguo, I’m doing quite well at home, you don’t have to worry!" Weiguo said with a beaming smile.
"Weiguo, has Daddy gone to work this week?"
"He has, but I have to nudge him every day, otherwise he’ll be lazy!" Weiguo frowned; Daddy was just too lazy, and he had to be pushed every day to go to work.
Tian Xinhua smiled and said, "Don’t worry, Weiguo, haste doesn’t bring success. Uncle being able to persist in going to work every day is already quite good. Once he adapts to this way of life, he won’t need someone to supervise him."
"Really? I really hope Daddy can be like my uncles, so no one will laugh at us." Weiguo dreamed of a bright future.
"Even if Daddy can’t change for the better, we can still rely on ourselves. As long as we become very strong, no one will dare to laugh at us in the future." Jianguo comforted his brother, his face showing a trace of a man’s resolve.
"Jianguo is right, it’s better to rely on oneself than on your parents. We must be independent and strong." Tian Xinhua agreed wholeheartedly.
"Then you guys have to work hard now. Once you both become amazing in the future, I’ll have plenty of reliable people to lean on! Hehe." Tian Sisi said with a giggle.
"With that brain of yours, you’d better just stick close to us, and don’t let yourself be sold off and still help count the money!" Tian Xinhua’s sharp tongue kicked in again.
Tian Sisi rolled her eyes at Tian Xinhua, "Tian Xinhua, I’ve scored better than you in every test this term, your brain is the one that’s not working!"
"Being good at studying doesn’t necessarily mean you have a good brain. Great-grandpa has always said, you shouldn’t study too much, otherwise, you’ll turn into a bookworm."
Tian Xinhua’s expression froze; this term, for some reason, Ah Nan must have taken some kind of elixir, her grades shot up dramatically, improving with each test, forcing him to spend more time studying every day, or else how could he stand tall in front of the little girl?
"Hmph! Grandpa never said that good students are definitely bookworms. Don’t make excuses for your poor studying; I’m going to tell Brother Shouhua that you called him a bookworm!"
Tian Sisi shouted at Tian Xinhua loudly; this darn Tian Xinhua, always saying she had no brain, she’s not the original owner of this body, the fool.
Watching the little girl’s indignant manner made Tian Xinhua want to laugh, but he managed to suppress his laughter and said a few nice words to appease Tian Sisi. Indeed, Ah Nan has made great progress this year and wasn’t as brainless as before.
Tian Sisi wasn’t really angry to begin with; a few sweet words from Tian Xinhua were enough to make her smile again, and not missing the moment, Jianguo said:
"As long as Sisi is a happy princess, that’s good. Leave all the hard work to us!"
Jianguo’s words had barely finished when Weiguo also chimed in, nodding, "Right, in the future, my big brother and I will earn money for Sisi to spend."
The two little guys’ words made Tian Sisi blossom with joy. In their previous lives, they were both human money-printing machines! Her days ahead were going to be richly comfortable! Tian Sisi’s mood was as ecstatic as a kite soaring in the sky.
At lunchtime, Shou Jizu returned, and after not seeing him for a week, he had changed drastically. He looked tanned like a seaside fisherman, his face scruffy with an uneven beard, one pant leg higher than the other, both speckled with mud—gone was his previous neat and crisp appearance. He seemed to have aged several years, and it seemed he matched Tian Manlan quite well.
Upon seeing Tian Sisi and the others, Shou Jizu was immediately moved to tears. Finally, these little ancestors had arrived; he really needed to have a good talk with them. Working every single day was not a job for humans; this last week had nearly cost him half his life.
Thanks to the vegetables brought by Tian Sisi and the others, the lunch was relatively lavish. Shou Jizu wolfed down three evening’s worth of meals, ate plenty of meat, and finally slowed down contentedly. Having meat to eat was truly delightful, and the soreness in his body eased.
After a meaty and satisfying meal, Shou Jizu let out several contented burps. Then, with a pained expression, he said, "Xinhua, Jianguo, Ah Nan, you see, a whole day’s hard work from dawn to dusk earns me but a few work points. It’s not even comparable to earning a big score in Shanghai!"
"How much money did Unc had you brought back from Shanghai before?" Tian Xinhua asked with a faint smile.
"What money brought back? Each trip’s fare had to be taken from Mama," Jianguo said coldly. Whenever Daddy went out, the family would have to rely on salted vegetables for several months.
Shou Jizu’s expression stiffened, then he laughed awkwardly twice, "Well, making money depends on opportunities, right? But this time, Unc will definitely bring back money. You have to believe me."
"Daddy, you always say the same thing before you leave."
This time, the one to twist the knife was Weiguo. Shou Jizu’s expression grew even more awkward. He glared fiercely at his two sons, who were not the least bit intimidated and glared back, looking much more menacing than Shou Jizu.
In less than two minutes, Shou Jizu was defeated. He sighed deeply, lamenting that these kids were really born to settle debts with him.
"In that case, Unc should just stay home and earnestly go to work. Although you can’t make a fortune that way, at least you can still earn some rations," Tian Xinhua said indifferently.
"Unc, don’t worry about not working as fast as others. It’s just the beginning, after all. Give it a year or so, and you’ll get used to it," added Tian Sisi, unable to restrain herself.
Shou Jizu’s shoulders slumped. A year? He couldn’t even endure this one week, and he wanted to say more. But before he could speak, Tian Xinhua’s chopsticks snapped with a ’pop,’ and Shou Jizu quickly withdrew, daring not to utter another word.
Tian Manlan cast several pitiful glances at her distressed husband, forcefully suppressing the urge to plead on Shou Jizu’s behalf. She couldn’t allow her children to get hurt again. Although the kids had not said it outright, she knew that if she acted like before, the children might truly give up on her!
Additionally, during this time with Shou Jizu home, even though her husband did not earn much each day, at least it was an extra pair of hands at work. More importantly, she was no longer the only one carrying the burden at home. Her in-laws dared not treat her poorly, nor did the villagers disdain her like before. This week was the first time she had felt like she was truly living like a person!
Having tasted the sweetness of this arrangement, how could Tian Manlan bear to let Shou Jizu leave? Now, she was eager for her husband to stay by her side every day. Even if he couldn’t work or earn money, she’d happily provide for him. Thus, Tian Manlan made an effort not to look at Shou Jizu’s pleading eyes and kept her head down, busily eating her meal.
Shou Jizu sighed helplessly, resignedly dropping his chopsticks and going to the bed for a nap. Sigh, he still had to work in the afternoon! (To be continued.
