Chapter 141: 135 work
"Mama, just give it a try. You don’t have to worry about anything else; just make sure you’re not always catering to Daddy’s will like before. What’s most important is that you keep the money in the house safe and don’t let Daddy get his hands on it. Otherwise, he’ll steal the money and sneak off again, and who knows how long he’ll be out there fooling around before returning?"
Jianguo was ardently trying to persuade her. He genuinely hoped that his father could successfully reform. Every child longs for a great father, and Jianguo was no exception. Although he was completely disillusioned with Shou Jizu, he’d be over the moon if Jizu could become like his uncles.
"Alright, I’ll listen to you all. It’s just a matter of whether your father can really change," Tian Manlan responded, not holding much hope but still harboring a sliver of expectation, wishing that a miracle would descend from heaven and fundamentally transform Jizu.
The children’s faces revealed satisfactory smiles. As long as Tian Manlan was willing to cooperate, that was fine. Jianguo thought of a problem and showed a troubled expression, "But we can’t stay at home every day to supervise Daddy’s work, can we? We’ll have to leave this afternoon, and Mama surely won’t be able to control him."
Tian Manlan smiled awkwardly on the side. She knew her own personality; she surely wouldn’t be able to handle Jizu.
Weiguo, who had been silent up until now, suddenly spoke up, "I can supervise. Big Brother and Sisi, you guys can go back today, and I’ll stay at home to keep an eye on Daddy’s work."
That seemed like a good idea, but Weiguo was too young. If he stayed at home alone, what would happen if the village kids bullied him again? Jianguo was hesitant. He truly didn’t feel comfortable leaving his younger brother behind. Tian Sisi was a bit worried too. She didn’t trust that Tian Manlan and her husband could protect Weiguo.
"Don’t worry. Shou Liguo wouldn’t dare bully me anymore. I’ve gotten much stronger now. Even if I can’t beat him, I can run away. Grandpa has taught me all this, I won’t suffer any loss," Weiguo assured confidently, thumping his chest.
Seeing the children so worried, Tian Manlan couldn’t help but laugh, "Look at how anxious you all are. We adults are at home, right? What could possibly happen to Weiguo?"
"Elder Aunt, back when Jianguo and Weiguo used to get bullied so terribly by the village kids, I didn’t see you or Uncle stepping in to help."
Tian Sisi couldn’t help snapping, causing Tian Manlan’s face to fall. Her eyes reddened as if she was about to cry. This frightened Tian Sisi into silence, not uttering another word.
"I think it’s also a good idea to visit home once a week if we really can’t feel at ease. I reckon that rascal Shou Liguo wouldn’t dare do anything to Weiguo," Tian Xinhua thought for a moment and made the decision. This seemed to be the best compromise—having Weiguo there to urge him on, Shou Jizu might not work diligently, but at least he wouldn’t sleep in anymore.
The miserable Shou Jizu, while making the fire, was also planning to sweet talk his wife over the next few days, hoping to coax some money out of her so he could go wandering again. He was feeling absolutely stifled having to stay in this mountain hamlet all the time.
Having seen the world outside, Shou Jizu had no desire to stay in this colorless mountain village.
Tian Sisi looked at Shou Jizu humming tunes merrily while making the fire and sneered coldly. Humph, enjoy your morning while it lasts. Soon you’ll be crying without tears!
After breakfast, Shou Jizu, as usual, carelessly pushed his bowl aside, wiped his mouth, and was ready to go out for a stroll. Tian Xinhua stopped him with a smile that wasn’t quite a smile, "Uncle, where are you planning to go?"
"I’m just going out for a walk, nowhere in particular," Shou Jizu said, laughing it off.
"Don’t you plan on going to work?"
"Going to work? I’ve never worked a day in my life!" Shou Jizu laughed as if he had heard the most absurd story, looking at Tian Xinhua with a ’what can you possibly do to me’ expression that just screamed to be punched.
Tian Xinhua didn’t say much, just like when he intimidated Shou Chengzu last time, he grabbed the firewood stick Tian Sisi brought over, and with a karate chop, snapped it in half; Shou Jizu’s laughter caught in his throat as his face turned white as a sheet.
"Brother Xin Hua, you’re losing your touch, the stick you used to scare Shou Chengzu last time was even thicker!" Tian Sisi chipped in, worried that Shou Jizu wasn’t scared enough.
Tian Xinhua dusted off his hands, throwing away the broken firewood stick, and said indifferently: "Last time it was against outsiders, the thicker the better. This time it’s our own people, so obviously, we should be polite, right Uncle?"
After saying that, Tian Xinhua even gave Shou Jizu a smile. Tian Xinhua was naturally a handsome youth, and this smile was dazzling like a spring blossom, but in Shou Jizu’s eyes, it was as terrifying as a demon.
Shaking slightly, he replied, "Yes, yes, that’s right, we’re all family here."
No wonder Shou Jizu’s mom and big brother, both ruthless people, were cowed by these kids. Tian Xinhua really was a scourge! Shou Jizu was so upset he couldn’t even cry.
"So, Uncle, do you want to go to work or not?"
"Of course, I will go, I’ll go to work right now," Shou Jizu answered loudly, as if afraid Tian Xinhua wouldn’t hear him.
"Uncle, you’d better work hard. If you can’t even earn a woman’s share of work points after a whole day, that would really be embarrassingly pathetic." Tian Sisi also chimed in with a giggling enthusiasm.
Shou Jizu forced a few laughs, unwilling to entertain Tian Sisi. He had figured it out; these little devils were here just to torment him. Pfft, a brave man does not suffer immediate losses, just wait until they leave and I’ll slip away.
Today, Shou Jizu, the village layabout who never worked, actually showed up for work, which absolutely shocked the villagers of Huangkeng Village. Were pigs flying? Even Shou Yaowu was taken aback. Did his nephew get water on the brain?
Shou Jizu smiled and said to Shou Yaowu, "Second Uncle, do you have any light tasks? Assign some to me."
Before Shou Yaowu could react, Tian Sisi sweetly said, "Village Chief Grandpa, my uncle here expressed deep remorse last night. He has decided to work hard from now on, aiming for improvement and not to disgrace Huangkeng Village."
Shou Jizu rolled his eyes, having never said such words, while Shou Yaowu was exceedingly moved. For years, their Huangkeng Village had been the butt of jokes at town meetings because of layabouts like Shou Jizu, and the village chief had been laughed at for over a decade. His dignity was thoroughly lost.
Hearing his nephew wanted to make a fresh start, Shou Yaowu was even more excited than Shou Jizu’s real father, Shou Yaosong, nodding repeatedly.
"That’s great! A prodigal who returns is more precious than gold. Second Uncle will find work for you. For now, go join the women’s group."
Shou Jizu felt no shame working alongside the women. He agreed and cheerfully followed Tian Manlan to the women’s group. There he chatted and laughed merrily with the women as they worked.
Shou Jizu, a good-looking man with a sweet tongue and someone who could share exciting tales from outside, made the women laugh heartily, not minding that he was working slowly.
Seeing Shou Jizu adapting well, Tian Xinhua took Tian Sisi and headed back. It was too sunny here, and they shouldn’t let Ah Nan get sun-tanned.
