Chapter 73: Minus one point!
Chapter 73: Minus one point!
In each round of the competition, everyone knew there was one single rule: the questions increased in difficulty, so each one was harder than the one before.
Now it was the last question, so of course it must be the hardest one.
He was scared. If he answered it incorrectly, he would lose points. He would have a negative score.
Question ten was about to be displayed on the screen.
The countdown began:
Three!
Two!
One!
CLANG!
Zhang Xiaosheng couldn’t comprehend why there was suddenly an eerie silence that swept across the entire room.
And, one second later, the crowd erupted into thunderous applause.
"Zhang Xiaosheng! Zhang Xiaosheng!"
Zhang Xiaosheng stood there stupidly.
The students from Jixia Academy were all chanting his name.
"Jixia Academy, please give us your response." The host prompted him.
Zhang Xiaosheng looked around. The CLANG! just now was of his own doing.
He looked down at the buzzer. He was the one who had hit it.
Wasn’t he hesitating just now?
When had he pushed it?
He’d pushed it at the very last moment, confused.
Zhang Xiaosheng gathered his thoughts and emotions to answer the question.
The host had already started to count down. "Eight...seven...six..."
He didn’t know how to answer this question.
His mind was blank. His mind raced quicker and quicker as he realized this, but he couldn’t find any hints in the options at all.
He originally could find a hint or two to guide him in picking out an option with a clear mind, but in his current mental state, he was panicked to the point that sweat had started dripping down his face.
He could hear the host counting down...
It seemed as if there was some hissing coming from the crowd also, but he wasn’t sure if he was hearing right.
Just as the host was about to yell "one", Zhang Xiaosheng gambled. There was a 25 percent chance that he would be right.
In the last second, Zhang Xiaosheng shouted, "B! I choose option B!"
"The answer is..." the host dragged it out, "incorrect!"
The screen flashed as the correct answer was displayed.
It was option D.
Zhang Xiaosheng’s face turned pale and he lost all expression.
Not only had he failed to answer a single question correctly, he had even gotten a -one score.
He wasn’t even as good as the other remaining four schools.
The other four competitors were glad. Although they had received zero points, Jixia had done worse and ended up with a negative score.
Everyone had tried their best to achieve first place in this year’s competition.
But failing this, if they could see the almighty Jixia fall from grace, not achieving the championship had become more acceptable.
During previous years, they had had to face the smug and arrogant looks of those from Jixia, who treated all the other teams as if they were unworthy opponents.
In comparison to getting first place, they hated those from Jixia more.
Despite not saying anything, the crowd thought that Zhang Xiaosheng had lost his mind and his composure now.
Zhang Xiaosheng remained silent. What was this feeling? He felt as if he was being suffocated. Suffocated to the point that he wanted to vomit blood.
"Xiaosheng!" Jixia’s teacher in charge called him out.
Zhang Xiaosheng was startled. Only then did he come back to his senses. He then stared maliciously at Qin Yan before begrudgingly turning around and walking off the stage.
The students of Shengyang high school were overjoyed. In just one round, Qin Yan had reached the Jixia Academy’s score. Also she did it so beautifully. They cheered for her, "Qin Yan! Qin Yan! Qin Yan!"
Qin Muran glared at Qin Yan and gritted her teeth in hatred. Why is this bitch so good at attracting attention!
The other four competitors warmly congratulated Qin Yan as they passed by. "You performed really well."
"A worthy opponent then!"
"Seems like Shengyang High school is up to something this year!"
"Let’s wait until the competition’s over. We can have a proper discussion then."
In the strands, Director Liu looked at Director Guo and said, "I would’ve never thought how much I misjudged this young lady. She really is quite talented."
"No, not really," Director Guo replied. He had learned from Qin Yan too, and he’d gotten more professional.
*
"For the second round, we’ll have Zhao Xiaoou go on stage," said the teacher in charge. "You specialize in this topic. I don’t think anyone is stronger than you in this specific field."
Lin Zhenhui nodded. "Exactly. Qin Yan’s performance was exceptional in this round, but everyone’s got a limit. There’s absolutely no way she can do just as well in the next round."
No one could do that.
"After my debacle on stage, we’re depending on you now for the next round, Xiaohe!" Zhang Xiaosheng clenched his teeth. "For the next round, please make sure you retaliate properly and put her in her place!"
Zhao Xiaoou nodded solemnly. "I understand."
She looked over at Qin Yan. She didn’t seem to be faring so well either.
There was no way Xiaoou could let herself favor a person who had embarrassed their team so much.
Zhao Xiaoou took a deep breath and went on stage with a dignified expression and took her place where Zhang Xiaosheng had last stood.
She turned to look at Qin Yan.
Qin Yan watched Xiaoou from her peripheral vision, looked back at her, and gave her a smile.
Zhao Xiaoou felt shivers run up her spine.
"Your performance in that last round was impressive," Zhao Xiaoou said.
Qin Yan smiled, "Thank you."
Zhao Xiaoou had nothing to say to that.
HMPH!
How annoying.
Qin Yan could already tell that Zhao Xiaoou hated her attitude and behavior.
And since Zhao Xiaoou hated it, she would just continue to behave like this and more.
In the best case scenario, Zhao Xiaoou would get frustrated to the point where she would keep competing for the buzzer until her hands started shaking.
