Chapter 89: Backstabbed(1)
"What ... I... I... died?"
The realization struck Steve like a lightning bolt to the skull—sudden, jarring, and completely uninvited.
He stared at her, dumbfounded, his body tensing, tremors creeping along his spine. His fear wasn’t a scream or a panic—it was awe.
"I... I died?" he whispered.
She paused. Her expression didn’t shift—not even a twitch.
He searched her face for some trace of mockery, some hint of sarcasm or a smirk playing on her lips. But there was none. Her face was blank and groggy as ever, her tone steady.
She wasn’t messing around.
She was serious.
She was dead serious.
Her words were actually trustworthy.
If she somehow knew about the author’s notebook, about his plans, and even his recent exchange with Dina... then... maybe she had some cosmic ability, some omniscient access.
’If her words so far have been nothing but the truth... then that’d mean that maybe...just maybe... I really might have died.’
"Are you... are you shitting me?"
Steve muttered, teeth clenched, voice low and trembling.
She met his eyes calmly.
"Do you really think I’d lie to you at this point?"
"Fuck yeah." Steve shot back, voice rising.
"I don’t know shit about you. And besides, you’ve already stated that you’re intimidated by my strengths...plus, I don’t even know shit about you!"
She raised an eyebrow.
"And you never will. Not while you hold ill intentions."
Steve clicked his tongue in frustration. Again.
"I can’t give you much detail." she continued, her voice dropping slightly.
"... but just know... in the next mission... if you don’t get stronger... you die. A sword. Straight through your heart."
She paused. Her next words dripped like water from a leaking faucet.
"By... well... that part I can’t tell you."
"What?! No. Fuck that!" Steve shouted.
"You have to talk! Who did it? What coming mission?!"
But Rapunzel didn’t answer. She only looked at him for a moment longer, then turned her gaze away and raised a hand as if to silence any further protest.
"I’ve given you what you need to know. A word is enough for the wise."
With that, she turned and walked away.
Steve stood there, frozen. His thoughts churned as her footsteps faded down the corridor.
"Wait. Wait, goddamn it!" he called after her.
"You need to tell me what I’m supposed to do! I can’t just be left hanging like this. You can’t dump this kind of information and leave!"
No response.
She just kept walking, her figure shrinking with each step until she rounded the corner, disappearing into the hallway’s shadows.
Alone now, Steve remained motionless.
No words.
No movement.
Only silence.
As Rapunzel passed by in the background, her gaze briefly lingering on him, Steve finally dropped his head, raising his hand and looking into his palm—at himself.
His lips moved before he could stop them.
"I died... on my first mission?"
And right then, as she faded away into the corridow, a system notification rang out.
[Ding!]

By the time he reached his dorm room, classes were still ongoing, but Steve couldn’t ccorridor,
His head was a thunderstorm of thoughts. He paced the room, breath heavy, heart thudding. Rapunzel’s words echoed endlessly in his mind.
That had to be the most terrifying conversation he’d had in this entire damn academy.
Not only did she know about his secret group and the author’s notebook—but worse, others apparently knew, too.
That meant his cover, his safety, his plans... were all dangling by a frayed thread.
’And what the hell was this mission she spoke of?’
’How can I avoid getting killed by when I don’t even know what is coming?’
"It doesn’t make sense." Steve muttered.
"I have the Ghost. He protects me. And I’ve got the Puppeteer’s strings. I’ve even got combat skills. There’s no way... no fucking way I die that easily."
He shook his head, hard.
"She’s lying. She has to be. Hell, she lied about her name—why wouldn’t she lie about this?"
But even as the words left his mouth, a pit formed in his gut. Deep down, something inside him knew.
Rapunzel hadn’t been lying. Her voice had held no malice, no bluff. Only truth.
"No." he growled.
"No fucking way I’m going down like this."
He crossed the room in a rush, reached under the mattress, and yanked out the author’s notebook.
Its surface felt cold in his hand.
"If she knows about this notebook, then she knows where I hide it. I need a new spot—somewhere safer."
But for now...
He clenched the book tightly. His jaw set. Eyes flared.
"First things first—I’m finding Dina. I’m throwing myself into hellish training. Whatever it takes. I’m gonna become the strongest bastard this school’s ever seen. Strong enough that no sword can pierce me. Strong enough that no prophecy can touch me. I will not die."
He yanked the cover open, snatched up his quill, and scribbled with furious determination:
"Player. Upon muttering the word ’Summon’ with intent, the Bind Ghost will appear before me."
He slammed a full stop at the end.
[DING.]
A soft chime rang in his head.
[System Notification: Task Completed.]
He paused. Breathing hard.
So that was it. He could now summon the Ghost at will. No more guessing. No more hoping it showed up when he was in danger.
"Perfect." he muttered.
"Now I can pull him into a fight at the exact moment I need him."
But even that wasn’t enough. He couldn’t depend on the Ghost forever. He needed to fight on his own. Be his own savior.
He set the quill down, closed the notebook, and slid it under a pile of clothes in his dresser.
"This’ll do... for now."
He stood, fists clenched.
"I haven’t even banged the Queen Witcher yet... or any sexy MILF goddess. So there’s no fucking way I’m dying in my first mission."
With that, he turned on his heel and strode out of the room, eyes sharp, jaw tight.
He had one goal now.
Find Dina.
