Chapter 81: Vehicle Delivery [5]

"Go! Get to the car! We’ll cover you!"

Garrison was used to this, and Gio was ready for the battlefield. The moment the two of them heard those words, they jumped out of the car and started sprinting back towards the blue car several meters away.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The explosions in the sky were still running wild. Gio could hear them above him and feel the heat, but he didn’t look up a single time.

The ground team was properly at and around the truck. Ulver was in the front seat since his power worked only on living things. The rest were either standing on the roof or hanging out the window, using their abilities to blast the bombs in the sky so they never reached the ground.

Gio kept his eyes forward. The car got closer and closer with every passing second. He glanced over at Garrison who was slightly in front of him and then directed his eyes forward again.

No, he almost did, but before he could, he caught something in his peripheral.

"Gio!"

He heard someone on the ground team shout, but he didn’t know who.

His gaze locked there in an instant. His body moved before he could give it any commands. He took a step back and let Garrison get further in front of him.

And then, without hesitation, he slammed his body forward and threw the man to the ground.

Bang!

Garrison couldn’t question Gio’s actions. Before a single thought entered his mind, a blast of red energy flew over them and exploded in the air.

There was a man approaching from the distance. He was a little far when he shot his first attack, but he’d already gotten close to them.

He leapt in the air. His hands grabbed the sword on his hip. Garrison couldn’t see it, but Gio could.

His eyes didn’t leave that man. He was in the air with his sword crossed over his body.

’Downward slash.’

He read the move in the short period he had.

"Tch!"

His weapons were in the zephyr. He didn’t think he’d have to fight today.

He had no choice. In that split second, he slammed his leg into the ground with a white halo emanating from his feet.

"Haaah!"

Rumble!

It was a subtle movement and all that was produced was a small protrusion of rock, but it was enough.

Gio pushed his foot against it and slammed himself to the side.

Shing!

At the same time, that man landed and completed his movement. His sword swung through the air, and just as Gio hit the ground, an arc of blue light whooshed past him, slicing the air in half.

Gio furrowed his brows.

"Garrison, get to the car! I’ll hold him back until then!"

"But--"

Garrison was too weak to even dodge the attacks Gio had dodged. He realized he was the one who had to run early. He looked over at Raymond and the others, but they were too focused on the bombs above.

They were watching, but unless it was absolutely necessary, even a single one of them taking their eyes off the sky could mean death for them all.

Gio didn’t have time to listen to Garrison’s arguments either. He didn’t know who their attacker was, but he was clearly a part of the organization Raymond had been attacking.

More importantly, since he didn’t move closer to the armored truck after landing on the ground, he had clearly given up on the ground team.

Gio and Garrison had been chosen as sacrifices to soothe his anger.

He was already charging at them again.

"Hahaha! Are you the one fighting me, boy?!"

The man grinned, his flame-red hair and eyes sparkling with a light of insanity.

"That works for me!"

He grabbed the hilt of the sword that had been stored in the scabbard on his hip the moment he finished his swing.

Gio watched him move in slow motion.

’Right foot forward, torso turning left.’

He was going to do a diagonal slash up to the left.

In a moment, [Memory Book] tracked it all. When time resumed again...

Shing!

The man appeared before Gio in an instant and swung as he expected.

Gio turned his body, bending himself almost ninety degrees to avoid the arc of the slash. He locked eyes with the man who was looking down at him with a flabbergasted expression and gritted his teeth.

"Khhh!"

Gio’s hands glowed with white light. At the lowest part of his arc, he swept his arm down and willed the earth upward.

Rumble!

The hilt of a sword appeared. He grabbed it without hesitation and pulled. In the same motion, he continued his swing and pushed the blade up towards that man.

Whoosh!

He pulled himself up with his momentum, watching a sword of concrete cut through the man’s shirt and leave a thin line in his chest.

However, he wasn’t satisfied. The white hue in his hands never died out. If Gio didn’t cancel his momentum, he’d fall backward and leave himself open.

He chose to continue swinging instead.

His arm was straight in the sky at the end of the first swing. The man barely managed to pull himself back before his face was cut as well.

He looked up as Gio brought that blade down. The maniac look in his eye had already calmed down.

This child wasn’t an easy target.

Clang!

The man took a rapid step back and raised his sword. The two blades clashed with a metallic clang, sparks flying from the collision point.

The blade Gio held was no longer made of concrete. It had been transformed into metal in the middle of that swing.

Skrrrrrr!

The high-pitched scraping of those swords was deafening. Gio pushed down from above and the enemy pushed up from below. They locked eyes as they compared strength.

No, that shouldn’t have been a thing they were doing.

The man was certain he was stronger than a child, so how was he being held at a stalemate?

Even though this was so early into their battle, even though he knew he was, at the end of the day, stronger than that boy, he felt humiliated.

He wasn’t the only one surprised by Gio’s sudden show of strength.

In fact, the bombs in the sky got very close to hitting the ground for a moment as the members of the ground team reacted to the sudden movement.

They wanted to help Gio defeat that man, but as long as they were in the proximity of this Rest City, the bombs wouldn’t stop falling. They couldn’t help.

Jason watched with his nerves on end. Amaya and Jax were the same, almost leaving their positions to help. Natalia and Raymond looked at each other with severe looks in their eyes, but no words were exchanged.

’As I thought...’

Raymond kept it to himself, but he had been waiting for this to happen.

He always knew it was impossible for Gio to be an ordinary boy. Nobody like him could possibly be ordinary.

’Then show me.’

Raymond put a canopy up above his head and trained his eyes on that battle.

’Show me what you wanted to accomplish through our duel.’
