Chapter 77: Vehicle Delivery [1]
Rest Cities were like labyrinths.
They were all real populated cities in the past. Considering the location, this one was probably somewhere in the middle of what used to be Europe. They were made to be lived in, which meant that their original structure could become familiar with time.
The current Rest Cities could also become familiar, but it was almost impossible to memorize the layout of the entire city.
With the countless collapsed buildings that had become separators for different sectors, the various underground passages and areas, and the changes that had been made in the past thousand years, each Rest City was a maze of its own.
Usually, only its residents were privy to the best ways to get around. It was the same this time. Gio didn’t know the best path he could take to leave the city.
But he knew how Rest Cities worked, and he knew how to lose a tail.
He played with the people chasing him like they were really just in a game of tag.
His body was as light as a feather, and even though he looked like a normal fourteen-year-old, the power in his legs was really something else.
"Hahaha..."
Gio chuckled to himself as he felt the breeze on his face.
He was at a perfect speed. It felt immensely comfortable as he ran. When he got faster, it would just hurt if he didn’t protect himself somehow, so this was certainly a feeling to enjoy.
With his commands, Aether went into his legs and empowered his every step. His muscles refused to fatigue, his ligaments held strong no matter how much he pushed himself, and his joints never decayed.
These effects alone made it possible for him to run in a way that they couldn’t, but if that was it, he wouldn’t have escaped them.
His speed didn’t necessarily come from the enhancement of his muscles. It came from the enhancement of his body in general.
With Aether pushing through his legs, they moved faster than he could ordinarily command them to. His stride became longer, and as if he’d suddenly gained wings, he flew across the ground.
The people behind him never expected him to have any kind of power at his age. They were late on the uptake, allowing him to gain a considerable amount of distance on them.
From there, it was even more like a game.
Gio felt like he was sliding along buildings, jumping tens of feet into the air over piles of rubble, and doing tricks in the process.
In reality, he was just zigzagging through the streets. Every once in a while, he’d go underground and come back out at the next entrance. There wasn’t a specific path in his mind, but that didn’t matter at all.
His perception of the world at this speed was so glorious that he even felt a little happy when he got lost.
Honestly, Gio didn’t even know when he lost his pursuers. From start to finish, they were slightly curious and greedy. They didn’t have a reason to chase him once they realized he could escape.
’If it was actually something to be concerned about, I would have been concerned.’
If he didn’t accomplish what he had just now, it would have been different.
But now, Gio was already back in the desert without a single person on his trail.
’Good.’
He grinned to himself and summoned Hekat’s power, admiring the white energy glowing around his hands.
’A week should be enough time to familiarize myself with this.’
It was just getting used to a power he already knew. A week was more than enough time.
He didn’t realize how much he missed power.
’In the life I led before the Tower of Babel, I never felt the need for power. It felt unnecessary until the time came when I had to protect myself. And then, in the tower itself, I learned to fear the thought of existing without power.’
His plan was a very slow one that involved waiting a considerable period before gaining anything. In fact, even what he was doing now went against that.
’But after seeing the subjugations that I’ve been on and facing the Blackwing Blood Serpent, I realized that I still need a way to protect myself until I get to the main stage.’
All of this thought was useless. Merely, it was the process of Gio justifying his actions to no one other than himself.
He was somewhat particular about the plan he’d made for this life. If he took any steps away from it, he had no choice but to go back and see how his actions collided with what he needed to do.
If there were any clashes or issues, he wanted to iron them out as soon as possible.
But did he know how difficult that would become once he truly started changing the world?
The current Gio had no such thoughts. He was entirely focused on the short term.
In the week the Blue Steel Squadron spent grounded, he only left the open desert when he needed to eat or sleep. Everything else could be handled in the wild.
He trained and trained and trained. He learned his power, understood it, and created methods by which he could use it in actual combat.
Unfortunately, he wouldn’t get the chance to test any of that soon.
"Gio!"
When he returned to the zephyr on the last day, Raymond was already waiting for him.
"I heard you’ve been out the whole week. Did you enjoy the break?"
"Something like that. What’s up?"
Gio walked into the ship shrugging his shoulders.
Raymond crossed his arms, his eyes following Gio’s steps.
"Remember how I told you that your role is going to change from here on out?"
Gio nodded.
"Well, it’s about time I tell you what that role is."
Raymond grinned.
"Since you already seem familiar with all the roles on the ship, I think it’s about time for you to leave it. Don’t you think so too?"
"I do."
Gio’s eyes sparkled with a bit of excitement.
Was he being allowed into operations so soon?
"Well..."
Raymond’s grin only widened when he saw Gio’s expression.
He truly couldn’t wait to say his next words.
***
"Bastard."
Gio could do nothing but grit his teeth.
That conversation ended a long time ago, and after that conversation, they went ahead and moved on to their next mission destination in a rest city a couple hundred kilometers away.
Gio got out of the zephyr when the ground team did. He did that, but then somehow he ended up here.
"This is definitely not the battlefield," he said with some annoyance in his tone.
"Maybe not, but it’s a job we gotta do, and the Captain wants you to learn it, I guess."
"Haa..."
Gio sighed.
The man who spoke with a slight slur in his words was named Garrison, and he was part of a team that handled miscellaneous tasks throughout missions.
They were the ones who prepared vehicles, armor, and ammunition if it was necessary. They were the ones who refueled the aircraft in the fleet, took care of anything the ground team needed, and even...
"I feel like this has to be something you usually do when we break for a week. There’s no way Raymond didn’t tell you to hold off so this was the first thing I saw when I joined you guys."
Gio refused to believe it.
After all, right now, he and Garrison, along with a couple others, were at the side of the zephyr with a large tank next to them that had just been removed from the ship.
This particular task...didn’t need to be described in detail.
Whether it was a prank or not, here Gio was.
Standing in front of a container three or four times his height filled with–
Well, there wasn’t a need to say anything more.
