Chapter 56: Settling Affairs [4]
"If you’re dreaming of being a Sequencer, I can help you. The only concern I have is, as you know, your Weakness to Healing."
There was a conversation that had to happen after her acceptance as well.
The Old Lady decided to help Gio become a Sequencer, so she started giving him the information he needed.
"The most important thing is getting a Bloodline Sequence. If I use my connections, I can get you even a Titan Grade Sequence, so you should choose what kind of bloodline you want to inherit. Along with that..."
The Old Lady continued to talk, but Gio’s mind drifted away. He kept one ear on her words so he could go over them later, but in the current moment, he was elsewhere.
Bloodline Sequences weren’t necessarily categorized by effect, as their effects depended entirely on the species of beast they came from. At most, bloodlines were classified alongside the beasts they came from.
The categories existing for bloodlines classified their potency. The higher the category of the Bloodline Sequence, the stronger it was and the more abilities it had.
The lowest was Burrow Grade. From there, it went: Esper Grade, Terra Grade, Aurora Grade, Titan Grade, and Nova Grade.
The bloodline the Old Lady offered him was the second highest level, but even if he turned the Blackwing Blood Serpent’s Essence Blood into a Sequence, it would be Nova Grade.
Gio’s goals were higher than that.
’It’s possible to fuse Essence Blood from different beasts. Sometimes, their effects are bolstered, and other times, they’re downgraded. It all depends on the synergy between bloodlines.’
In the future, Bloodline Fusion became much more popular as it offered people a wider variety of abilities. As the technology got better and results were more guaranteed, they became the standard.
And as that same technology developed, a hypothesis was released by a professor in the 2nd Stratum.
’Equinox Grade.’
A grade of bloodline higher than even Nova. It was only hypothesized as the correct synthesis necessary for its creation was never found, but Gio had it.
’Rather, I have one.’
The Tower of Babel was an incredibly unique place. It contained an ecosystem that didn’t exist anywhere else, and its knowledge...
’Its knowledge far surpassed what humanity has ever discovered.’
He vividly remembered the scenes he’d seen in that tower of wonders beyond comprehension. He remembered the things he learned about genes and bloodlines while he was there.
By observing and analyzing the Sequences the tower gave him along with the mechanisms the tower allowed him to use with those Sequences, he figured out a certain combination.
He needed only the blood of two beasts which made it ideal, and the two beasts in question were those whose Essence Blood he could gain access to relatively easily when he returned.
The Blackwing Blood Serpent Essence Blood was already secured. All that was left was–
"...hey, pay attention. Even if you don’t hear anything else, you should hear this part."
He did pay attention, but what could he do? He’d already been a Sequencer for a hundred years, so none of the information was new to him.
He still allowed the Old Lady to talk and did his best to pay attention until it was over.
Her speech was everything one could expect. She told him of the dangers of monsters and beasts, the distinctions between them, and, of course, she made sure he knew not to trust humans too much.
As for actual facts about Sequencers, such as their power structure or politics...
She left those out for now.
Those matters would only weigh on the mind of someone who was yet to even come in contact with a Gene Sequence. They wouldn’t be of any help.
She waited until all of the necessary material had been gone over before moving on.
"You said you’re going to train with that Raymond person, no?"
"Yeah. I’ll be with his team for around a year. We’ll still be around here, but I’ll be able to see what Sequencers are like on the frontlines."
"You can see what it’s like?"
"Mhm. He said I’ll be taking a backline role that won’t be near the battlefield. It’ll be safe."
"I see..."
The Old Lady nodded. She didn’t know much about this Raymond person and couldn’t find him by his first name alone, but she could ascertain some things from his previous visit to Gastle.
He had to present identification at the gate, after all.
’That person’s connections aren’t bad. He isn’t attached to anyone problematic, so he shouldn’t be part of anything dangerous.’
The Old Lady came to the Wasteland a long time ago, but she didn’t originate from this place.
She’d been part of the system before. She escaped it because she didn’t want the politics of the Upper Strata to affect her research, only keeping the connections she truly cherished.
Still, through those people and her own experiences, she could still understand the chaos slowly boiling over within the ranks of humanity.
She didn’t want to have direct contact with Raymond in case he knew who she was, but she didn’t want Gio to have more contact with him than necessary because she couldn’t be sure of who he stood behind.
When he came to Gastle, she could at least discover that much.
’They’re military mercenaries, so they’re either factionless or under Bridger’s banner.’
Military mercenaries tended to be more selfish than their peers. They didn’t participate in the politics of the world, but they were always watching and waiting for the moment when they could swoop in and claim benefits.
Essentially, they had a lot of similarities to Scavengers, so it was fine to trust them as much as she trusted Scavengers.
’Which is not at all.’
"Haa..."
She’d let Gio go after hearing a bit more about Raymond from him. Now that she was alone in her office, she was already rubbing her forehead.
’I can’t be patrolling at all times.’
She couldn’t be absolutely responsible for the child’s safety. Considering his age, she did have the right, but the path he was treading now required him to be treated like he was older in some cases.
There wasn’t a need to justify it or explain it endlessly.
She was just worried.
She was worried about the path that she knew usually led to death, and she was concerned about being unable to prevent the worst possible scenario if it ever came to be.
’Is this the case for everyone?’
Did every parent who raised a child to be a Sequencer feel this same thing?
’No.’
She shook her head.
’To those people, raising a Sequencer is the highest honor. They don’t think about the fact that their children might die on the battlefield. Most people are too blinded to worry about it until it’s already too late.’
Perhaps there were people like her in the world, and perhaps they all silently held their worries in as they sent their children off to chase their dreams.
That thought made her feel a little better.
’He said he’s leaving in three days...’
Her eyes went towards a case in the corner of the room.
’I guess I should start getting that ready.’
There was something she’d been preparing in case a day like this ever came.
Now was a better time than ever to bring it out.
