Chapter 189: Hidden Legacy [3]

Chapter 189: Hidden Legacy [3]

Gio and Neriah approached the wall he motioned towards. Though she didn’t know why he was leading them towards it, she didn’t ask questions.

She could find out through his actions and ask questions if that wasn’t enough.

"Do you have any skills besides fighting?" Gio asked as he brushed his fingers over the stone.

"Several. Perhaps you’re asking if I am skilled at decryption?"

"Correct."

"Unfortunately not. If the goal was to decode, I could help, but I haven’t learned anything related to ancient techniques."

"I see..."

Gio nodded. He had to wonder what kind of past Neriah came from.

She had many skills that an average person her age shouldn’t have had. Combined with her disposition, it was hard to see her as a normal person.

She didn’t actively portray herself otherwise, but she also didn’t try to hide it. Gio almost wanted to believe that she was a robot.

Nevertheless, Gio didn’t need her help in this particular instance. He’d only learned decryption in theory; however, bringing theory into reality wasn’t hard in these kinds of situations.

With his eyes painted black, Gio stared into the "change" beyond the wall. There was a bright blue light at eye level, and below it were twelve pale yellow colored lights spread out in a star-like pattern.

Gio placed his hand flat against the wall and inserted virtual energy into the surface, forming it into something like a key.

’The blue light is the end goal. The flow of energy starts here...’

He moves his pointer finger to the yellow light in the middle.

’...and ends here.’

His brows furrowed for a moment as he analyzed all of the possible patterns that could be drawn by those six stars. It had to somehow connect to the blue light at the top as well.

’It could have several different meanings that I have no way of interpreting without knowing the owner of this legacy, but if we’re going based on statistical likelihood alone...’

The [Memory Book] shifted the image on its pages until it formed the most probable shape for Gio to follow.

And he followed it exactly. His energy touched the lighted past the wall, guiding their movement and lining them up vertically into the trunk and roots of a tree.

The subtle hue between his hand and the wall became slightly brighter with every movement until the trunk was complete.

He shifted his energy towards the blue light. With only a single prod, it burst into a shower of light that rained down onto the trunk and became its canopy.

The symbol of the shining blue and yellow tree illuminated through the wall, causing Neriah’s eyes to widen.

’He found a secret that I couldn’t sense?’

It was hard for her to fathom. Luckily, the wall itself cut off her thoughts.

Rumble!

The labyrinth around them moved until there was a straight corridor presented in front of them.

Gio and Neriah looked at each other and nodded. Not much more time passed before they were running down the hall.

The maze that trapped them for several hours was dismantled like nothing. They could still see the winding corridors all around them, but none of them had value any longer.

They approached the end of the corridor, finding a large set of wooden double doors leading to a new area.

"We should be prepared," Gio said, to which Neriah nodded.

As she drew her swords, he carefully opened the–

Boom!

They flew back over ten feet and steadied themselves as the doors splintered into a rain of flying shrapnel.

"Expected."

"Indeed. It has been far too quiet."

The first trial was a verification method. If they had never found the hidden code in the wall, they would never have escaped the maze.

Now, the tomb confirmed that the person inside was the person who was supposed to inherit the legacy. It had moved them into the true body of the legacy.

Well, it was more apt to say that the true body of the legacy found them.

They didn’t have a chance to walk through the doors before the source of the explosion found them.

RUMBLE!

The entire world shook around them. Roars and squeals filled the air. An army pushed through the destroyed doorway and charged at them in full force. Between all the sound and the fireballs that were being shot at them, they couldn’t be sure if they were seeing things right until they came face to face with their enemies.

But that was indeed the case.

"What the hell is even this?!"

A hundred creatures. A hundred creatures that looked like cute orange and black piglets charged at them with eyes filled with fury. It would have been a cute enough scene if it weren’t for the aura of bloodlust and rain of fire that came along with them.

The wave of orange and black looked like a rushing tide of lava. It didn’t even give Gio and Neriah the time to be fooled by their appearances before all hell broke loose.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

The fireballs had been mentioned already, but not nearly to the extent of showing the chaos they caused.

Nothing was flammable, but everything was on fire. Within a few seconds, the temperature in the corridor increased sharply, leaving sweat dripping down the brows of the two fighters.

"Run!"

Gio said it only so Neriah could understand his plan. They were small and powerful. Fighting all one hundred of those creatures at once was a death sentence.

But the corridor didn’t lock Gio and Neriah in place. Even if they couldn’t move forward, they could do anything else.

Just before the creatures could reach him, Gio turned to the side and bolted into the nearest labyrinth corridor. Neriah did the same, moving in the opposite direction into the other half of the labyrinth.

The piglet creatures swarmed into the labyrinth corridors after them, splitting the pack in half.

Gio looked behind him as he swerved around a corner.

"Woah!"

He abruptly spun his body, barely avoiding a fireball that swept by his cheek.

[Aura Explosion]

Boom!

Blue energy erupted into the world in all directions, putting cracks in the walls and throwing away all the creatures near Gio.

"Tch!"

He clicked his tongue when he saw that barely any damage was done to any of them, but it was to be expected.

’It would be stranger if they were anything like how they look.’

If there wasn’t an unreasonable amount of power packed into their small forms, there wasn’t a single reason to make them look as they did.

Gio threw his arm behind him as he turned another corner. A wall of blue energy blocked the path behind him, but it was almost immediately besieged by fire.

’I only have a few seconds.’

It was still enough time to set something up.

More energy flowed into the atmosphere. Now that he was alone, Gio wasn’t forced to use only a single gene. Hekat’s power joined the virtual energy and manifested into the world, creating a deep pit in the ground that was soon filled with virtual flames.

By the time the wall was broken down, the trap was prepared. The barreling piglets threw themselves into the pit of flames where only death awaited them.

But if they died so easily...

’...this wouldn’t be a challenge.’

Gio’s steps didn’t halt for even a single second. The horde piled into the pit until it was completely full, and the rest of the piglets used their fellows as a bridge to make it to their enemy.

It was a strange battle, sure, but it had only begun.

And it was only the first of many challenges that would soon present themselves.
