Chapter 170: Mysterious Escape [4]

Chapter 170: Mysterious Escape [4]

Moon Rabbit followed his eyes to the center of the bunker.

There were three large mechs and fifteen regular-sized models. They were all designed differently; created to be operated by specific people. More importantly, they didn’t try to hide their capabilities at all.

With only one look, one could see that they were weapons of mass destruction.

"That’s your first question?" Moon Rabbit asked, a smile tugging on her lips.

"Is there anything else to ask?" Gio returned.

"Well, yeah. Usually, it’s more along the lines of asking what we do or how we live in a place like this. Nobody usually asks that one before they find out naturally," she said.

"But there’s no problem with telling you that much. As long as you’re here, a lot of things will be revealed to you. That’s also why you can’t leave here until we can confirm that you won’t leak anything."

"Can I tell people I’ll be gone?"

"You can tell them, but no details allowed. I’ll watch you send the text before I have them cut your holowatch connection. You’ll be able to use it, but you won’t be able to contact anyone until we allow you to."

They were easy enough rules to follow.

As Gio nodded, Moon Rabbit went on to answer his original question.

Put simply...

"We’re fighting everything."

She started with quite an impactful statement.

"The original goal when we founded this group was to take down the government, but by the time we expanded, we realized that there’s more to this than that. The core ideal we hold is that we want to get rid of the propaganda covering people’s eyes and show them how to reach a world that’s actually peaceful."

According to Moon Rabbit, they began to suspect that the world’s peace was a lie a long time ago and investigated the truth as ordinary people, only to find several walls in their way.

They didn’t expect walls. They only expected disappointment.

But those walls meant that they were on the right track. They dug deeper and found out more, learning about how humanity was being lulled into a false sense of freedom by its ruling entities.

They quickly formed a hatred for those entities, but as Moon Rabbit said, the issue was far more complex than they imagined.

"The real problem is obviously monsters. I don’t think anything is as big of a problem as monsters. But there are also monsters among humans. They’re people who use their positions or power to abuse others even when they know what kind of state the world is in."

They were hiding everywhere and affecting every level of society.

"While real Sequencers handle what’s going on outside these fake utopias, we handle what’s happening within. Or, at least, that’s the goal. I know it might sound like a stupid dream to most people."

They wanted to target corruption and cleanse humanity.

They wanted to do so by using technology that looked similar to what the Apocalypse Church was developing.

If it was a matter of framing them, anyone with a little bit of influence could connect the dots and do it. The chance of Moon Rabbit lying was also high.

Nevertheless, the only way to unpack everything was to wait and observe.

"Why’d you decide to save me?" Gio asked as they moved through the bunker.

"It couldn’t have been on a whim if you decided to bring me here. Did I look like a new recruit?"

Moon Rabbit giggled and shook her head.

"You? You look more like someone who needs a home. I really only brought you to stay here for a bit and leave when you found safety, but I made the offer just in case. You’re the one who decided to accept it."

"That’s true and all, but it’s only been an hour since we met. How do you know I’m not a plant?"

"Hahaha!"

That one was especially funny.

"Trust me. If you’re in Helix, I know who you are. You, Mr. Lynx, are new."

She patted his shoulder with a grin.

"New people in this city never have the confidence to pull crazy shit. Enforcers are too active here because of us, yet you still decided to fight. Also..."

She didn’t see the doppelganger in its Anastasia form, but she saw a monster she’d never seen before transforming its body several times during the battle. It was enough of a cause for concern.

"You went against the unknown so confidently. That fight didn’t look easy. After that, too, you didn’t panic when the Enforcers showed up. You could say I was impressed."

"I guess I’m glad I impressed you, then. Do I need to thank you?"

"Yeah, thank me lots. If it were the normal Enforcers, you’d have been fine. Those were special enforcers, though. They could throw you on the grill and cook you in the middle of the mall for everyone to see and they wouldn’t get in trouble for it. I really am too kind for saving your ass."

Gio raised an eyebrow.

"Descriptive example."

"Because it happened once."

Moon Rabbit ignored his surprise like it was nothing.

"Anyway, now that you’re here, it’s up to you to prove your trustworthiness so you don’t have to be locked up here. How you choose to do so...well, that’s up to you. Depending on what you want, there’s a couple of people you could talk to."

"If you’re into that sort of thing," she said, pointing towards the forges.

"Then I’ll introduce you to Blackwell. If it’s research, go find Hannah. Ask anyone rushing around and they’ll tell you where it is. If you just want to do miscellaneous stuff, just walk around and ask people if they need help."

She gave him a sidelong glance as if she’d saved the one he’d pick for last on purpose.

"And if you want to do combat, I’ll show you the way myself. What’s your choice?"

Gio rolled his eyes.

"You say that like you don’t already know."

"What can I say? I never trust anything I don’t hear directly."

Moon Rabbit responded with a smile and waved him along.

"Even if you want to go the combat route, there are a couple things you could do. You could shadow me if you wanted to. If you built up a reputation in the ring over there, it would have the same effect. If you don’t feel like socializing as much..."

"...it’ll be easiest for you to prove yourself in blood."

"That was an option?"

"It’s always an option. If you kill under our banner, it’ll become a death sentence for you. If we go down, you come down too. It’s a good enough insurance policy, isn’t it?"

"It is...until you meet someone who doesn’t care about their life."\

"Yeah, and a person like that wouldn’t get this offer."

She gave him a knowing look.

"You seem like the type to act reckless, but you can’t fool me. Right now, you need to live. I can see it in your fighting style."

"Hmm..."

Shadowing Moon Rabbit or building a reputation among the members of Lunos were both time-consuming tasks.

Gio agreed to go with her, but at the end of the day, he still had to return home as soon as he could to both deliver the sample to Klyde and train with his father.

’The sample can last in the Storage Hole for another two or three days at most.’

And the only way to establish trust in a few days was to build a trust based on blackmail.

Gio shrugged to himself.

He’d tried it out in the past and found that it really wasn’t his style, but he couldn’t help it this time.

For just a little while, he had to become an assassin.
