Chapter 168: Mysterious Escape [2]
He didn’t have any say in what came next.
"Seize them both!"
The man on the speaker yelled with annoyance and frustration in his voice. The van doors burst open as several teams of six to eight people stormed onto the ground. From the helicopters above, armed troops rappelled down to the rooftops and pointed their guns at the woman.
Her grin only widened.
"Come on, now."
She raised her hand. A purplish-pink energy filled the air before her before exploding into a mist that covered the whole space.
It fell down into the alley and spread through the sky. It touched Gio’s body, immediately making him slump onto the wall behind him.
His mind was still awake, but he felt like he’d lost all control of his body. The only thing he could feel now was a slight heat that made his very existence feel fuzzy.
His perception of the world around him turned into a mess of colors that swirled and morphed between patterns as if he’d taken a hallucinogen.
’How do I...?’
Gio used his own energy to counteract the effect only to find that it was far too much for his energy to touch. Anything he used to fix himself disappeared into thin air the moment it came in contact with the foreign force.
’This isn’t good. There’s a chance that woman isn’t backu–’
His eyes suddenly became clear again, making him aware that he was no longer on the ground.
He turned to the side in surprise and retreated several steps, his gaze locked with the woman standing next to him on the rooftop.
"You look confused," she said with a smirk.
"But now isn’t the time to ask questions, is it? Even if I’m a bad guy, I’m less bad than those guys. You either take that risk or end up in their hands."
She wasn’t wrong. The enforcers were affected by her ambush, but they wouldn’t stay that way forever.
"Lead the way," Gio said
He had to escape before they could mobilize again.
"Try your best to keep up."
With those words, the woman dashed across the rooftop and jumped to the next, forcing Gio to follow her.
The ground troops would need time to reorganize, but the helicopters were already after them before they’d even gotten a few tens of meters away.
In the depths of night, with only the light of the city and the spotlights of the helicopters shining on them, Gio and the woman rushed over the buildings like experienced thieves.
"This one’s a bit different!" She yelled as they approached another ledge.
"If you’re too scared, your trip ends here!"
She jumped, but she didn’t use nearly enough power to make it to the next rooftop.
Instead, she confidently plummeted to the ground below, spinning in the air and firing several spores into the sky that turned into puffs of pink mist that invaded and blinded the helicopter pilots.
’Why is she talking like I’m not a Sequencer too?’
Gio nodded in admiration at the display of power and followed her off the edge with ease.
They fell into the alley, each landing in their own way, and ran to a nearby manhole cover.
"You thought I was talking about the jump," the woman said with a grin.
"But greenies like you usually hate this part the most."
She slipped the cover off and jumped into the sewer tunnel below.
"You just met me, but you’re already underestimating me like crazy. Was the fight that uninteresting?"
Gio responded in confidence as he followed her down the hatch. Once she’d closed the hole behind them, they started moving again through the complex sewer system of Helix.
"We can lose them in here. They have no idea where we’re headed, so unless they come down here and chase us, they won’t be able to find us," the woman said.
"They won’t chase us down here?" Gio asked.
"They won’t," she answered immediately.
"Because you’re with me, they won’t follow us. They’re setting up a big sting on my people right now, so they don’t want to poke the bear more than they have to."
"Is it a sting if you know about it?"
"I mean, they still think it’s one."
They turned down a new tunnel and exited through a door on the side that led them into a set of corridors.
Finally, the woman turned around to look at Gio for the first time.
"Before we go any further, I have to decide whether to abandon you or not," she said.
It was a combative statement, but Gio didn’t say anything in response, allowing her to keep going.
"You look like you’re good in a fight, and I saw what you were fighting, so I won’t call you an enemy right away. Still, I grabbed you on a whim. I can’t take you anywhere before I know you’re good..."
But Gio beat her to the punch and asked her question first.
"Who the fuck are you?"
The woman raised a brow incredulously.
"No, no. Who the fuck are you? Don’t be asking me questions like I didn’t just save your ass."
"My ass could’ve saved itself, mind you. You probably just got yourself in trouble if they think you’re affiliated with me."
Naturally, he was being sarcastic. He was about thirty seconds too late to escape the situation unscathed. He barely had any stamina left, either. Another fight would have been the end of him.
"Hahahaha!"
The woman laughed.
"Me? Affiliated with you? You’re the one in trouble if they think you’re one of mine."
"Yeah, I got that much from the conversation you guys were having, but still...I don’t think I’ve ever heard of you before?"
Gio furrowed his brows. He didn’t remember her appearance in any way, but perhaps if he heard some sort of name or title he would be able to recognize her.
"Don’t worry about who I am," the woman said.
"If you don’t know, then that’s good enough. Just call me Rabbit."
"Rabbit, huh..."
Gio nodded.
"Let’s do it like that then."
He extended his arm for a handshake.
"You can call me Lynx."
It was another nickname from his past life, but coincidentally enough, but was also something Jax and Amaya liked to call him back on the zephyr.
He didn’t know what side this woman was on or what she stood for. Rather than telling her one of the identities he wanted to use in the open, he preferred to create a new one.
Unaware of his reasoning, the woman shook his hand.
"What do you fight for, Lynx?" She asked
He could only shrug.
"Myself, my family, and the world. What does anyone fight for?"
He didn’t have to think a single bit to answer her. He’d pondered the question on his own many times.
She could only see his eyes under his hood, but she could sense enough of his body language to understand how naturally that answer left his mouth.
’It’s new.’
It was a standard answer, but this was probably one of the only times she’d seen someone who honestly fought for such noble causes.
"I like you, Lynx."
She had a feeling about him.
More importantly, if what she saw was right, she needed to take him to her people anyway.
"I’ll take you to a safe place. That place...really, it’ll speak for itself when we get there."
With such vague words, she turned her back again and walked through the corridor they’d entered.
Through such a short exchange, she’d at least determined that he was not an enemy.
And through the same short exchange, he’d at least determined that this situation was something he had to entertain.
So, they walked.
With the police still chasing them above ground, hoping to catch them when they popped out of the sewers, they walked.
Until they reached the place that Rabbit wanted to show him.
