Chapter 128: Cult Encampment [6]

Breaking the wall open was a declaration of war.

Raymond, who flew on his hoverpack, and Jason became the primary targets of any guards in their vicinity. A number of them that had to be higher than twenty immediately charged in from all sides, revealing themselves and encircling the intruders.

There were even more guards outside that were rushing into the camp, numbering over eighty in total. Alice, Amaya, and Ulver stayed on the perimeter and fought them, lessening the burden of those within the camp.

The guards that funneled into the campgrounds arrived slowly due to their interference, making Raymond and Jason’s job easier.

However, with so much happening, nobody could help Natalia in her battle.

Not that they planned to.

From the very beginning, it was decided that if they had to fight, Natalia would be the one facing Mother Baba. The rest were supporting her and allowing her to do so without having to keep her attention on the surroundings.

Gio watched and heard it all from his position on the outskirts. He could see Natalia and the Raymond/Jason duo clearly from where he was. As for the rest, well, if he just strained his neck to see the sky on the other side of the wall, he could also see the aftereffects of their fights.

’She’s watching too.’

The person he spotted was in a similar position to himself. Her eye s were also coldly observing the ongoing battles.

’Confronting her here is too dangerous.’

If he wanted to see if his guesses were correct, he had to wait for her to move somewhere else. Until then, he could do nothing but watch the action.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

The Mother Baba facing Natalia’s darkness looked nothing like her usually hard-to-look-at self. She presented as a slender woman with snake-like features and dark green hair. Her tongue was long and forked like a snake, and her pupils were vertical as well.

The strength of her body in this form was immense. All of the vitality within her had been compressed and turned into strength.

She was nothing short of a human weapon.

Bang!

She swung her arm out, swiping her claws at Natalia’s face. She backed away to dodge the attack, melding into the shadows before reappearing in a different location, however, she was still forced to raise her blade immediately.

Boom!

Mother Baba was already in front of her. She opened her mouth and hissed with a violent expression, spraying an acidic fluid from her throat.

Natalia pulled her arm into the air, raising a shield of darkness to block the fluid. At the same time, she used her other arm to summon a massive sphere of darkness in the air and slam it down to the ground.

BOOOOM!

The area around her exploded, creating a crater in the sand. Natalia removed her shield and infused her blades with energy, cutting at the woman who still stood in front of her.

Mother Baba didn’t show any signs of external injury. She probably didn’t have many internal injuries either.

’Injuring her is not the way to defeat her.’

Natalia knew this well as someone who’d read her file. Mother Baba in such a state was practically impervious as the vitality in her body moved to heal any damage she received.

’However, her vitality is limited.’

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Natalia took the initiative, letting off a flurry of attacks without allowing her opponent a single moment of rest.

’She will be healed until her energy runs dry. When her energy runs dry, she is mostly powerless.’

As such, to defeat Mother Baba, the key was to cause as much damage as possible despite her healing, forcing her to waste vitality on regeneration until she had no more fuel.

BOOM!

Another eruption of sand happened on the other side of the camp, but Natalia couldn’t pay attention to it.

Gio, however, saw clearly as Jax leapt out of the flames with his hand around the fanatic woman’s neck.

Her head was cocked back, her eyes showing only white. There was an obvious winner in their bout.

Only, when he landed, Jax looked around and found Gio, the closest person to him. He threw the lady’s limp body at him, sending some words through his earpiece.

"Lock her up for me. I have to chase someone."

The woman’s body hit the ground and rolled a couple of times, stopping only a foot or two from him. Jax disappeared in the other direction soon after, in pursuit of a shadow fading into the distance.

Gio looked at the woman awkwardly for a second before shrugging and doing as he was told. He didn’t have anything to properly contain her, but the resources in the vicinity were enough to bind her temporarily.

In the several minutes he spent doing so, he barely ever took his eyes off Natalia’s battle.

She was doing well. With an established strategy in mind, she moved perfectly to counter Mother Baba, leaving her with little to no room to fight for momentum.

Her attacks were too fast for Gio to see. In his eyes, she appeared as flashes of blackness in the faded night sky. Her blades were like arcs of wind that traveled without any restrictions on their movements, and her energy felt inviolable.

With every passing minute, Mother Baba lost more vitality. And as she lost that vitality, she was barely able to scratch Natalia a few times.

She could keep up with the other woman’s speed and match her strength. The only difference between them was knowledge.

Because Natalia knew exactly how Mother Baba would move.

Hissss!

Mother Baba hissed violently as she was forced back on the defensive. She used her steel skin to keep herself safe and did her best to make distance, but it wasn’t working.

Natalia’s range of movement was too large. She was too fluid, and with the teleportation-like abilities of her darkness, she didn’t have to follow the conventional rules that everyone else did.

For good reason, Mother Baba had been furious from the moment that "little bitch" revealed Natalia. If she had done so more subtly, this entire battle could have been avoided.

But she couldn’t take her anger out on that girl. She took it out instead on the other main cause of the situation.

Or, well, she tried to. She tried to quell her anger through the blood of her enemy, but her enemy wasn’t normal. She was too strong. The battle was too even. A battle like this did nothing but fuel the wrath in her heart.

"Who do you think you are?!" She screamed despite still backing away.

"You think you’re so powerful?! You think you’re so pretty?! You think you don’t have anything to worry about?!"

Mother Baba had an obsession with beauty that was well-known in the world. It was the reason why she preferred to take vitality from beautiful women and handsome men, as she felt that she was obtaining their beauty for herself.

"Yours will be mine too! All beauty in the world can only belong to me!"

Mother Baba was never the most powerful djinn. She was never the person others feared because of her strength or ability.

She was feared for two reasons.

She had connections that felt impossible...

...and those connections could provide her with the means to win every battle even if she was fated to lose.

As her vitality ran low, she let out an enraged shriek and raised her arms. She allowed Natalia to attack her as she laughed wildly.

"Do everything you can!" She screamed in delight.

"Because this is the last thing you’ll ever be able to do!"

BOOOOOOOM!

Another wall of the camp was shattered.

No, it was better to say that the wall was consumed.

OOOOOOOOOH!

The sand burst open. A horrendous bellow filled the air.

It was a beast...or was it a monster? If there was ever a situation where the former could be confused with the latter, it was never a good thing.

A sandworm so big that it blotted out the moon rose out of the ground. Its massive body slithered over a hundred feet above the sand, yet a large portion of it was still underground.

It turned its head, an opening on the top of its body filled with countless rows of teeth, at Natalia specifically.

But everyone else’s attention was on it.

"Damn!"

Raymond gritted his teeth. He and Jason weren’t free enough to go after it. They’d killed several guards, but the number of enemies around them stayed consistent.

Alice, Amaya, and Ulver were the only reason the two of them weren’t being overwhelmed by sheer numbers, especially since the enemies were not ordinary people, but Sequencers.

They didn’t come from the Apocalypse Church. They didn’t seem to feel any hostility towards their own Sequences. In terms of danger...

If Raymond and Jason’s line broke, Natalia’s fight would be ruined.

Raymond looked at the worm as it bellowed once more, throwing its body towards Natalia. He bit his lip and tore himself away from the battle at hand, looking to Jason for understanding.

However, he didn’t get the chance to have a hero moment.

"Yoohoo!"

A voice rang out, ringing clearer than daylight in the night sky.

The aquamarine hair of that voice’s owner glistened in the moonlight as she suddenly appeared in the air before the sandworm.

And then...
