Chapter 118: Deployment [4]

Raymond trained Gio for three to four hours a day starting that day. Their training ramped up in intensity fast as Gio absorbed the lessons he was given, but they never truly reached a fast pace.

As Gio thought from the beginning, Raymond was showing him the very first steps he needed to take. Things would be slow for a long time.

The Rune of Change’s energy was extremely malleable. It was able to act in whatever way he wanted it to, but its base instinct was always the same. It was part of its name and identity, after all.

Whenever Hekat’s power was in the world, it had a burning desire to change the world it saw. Whether it was through battle or secondary methods, Hekat wanted to see change take place at Gio’s command.

That left him with a wide-open path that he could mold in any way he so desired. Gio, as someone who could hear the rune’s voice, understood how it preferred that path to be molded as well.

But Raymond wasn’t just referring to the Sequence’s growth path when he said its nature was related to how it was used.

He meant it literally as well.

"The picture you saw in your head when you were trying to connect with the Sequence is also how you should wield the energy in battle. You said it was flowing like a river. That means it will reach its truest potential if your fighting style can flow with the same smoothness."

Their first lesson was as simple as Raymond teaching Gio about energy.

He didn’t know much about Gio’s Sequence, so he couldn’t particularly tell him how to train, but he could guide any training that was done.

After establishing an understanding of the Sequence, he could start a more active training regimen.

That first day, Gio did nothing but slowly raise the metal ball into the air and put it back down. He felt the energy of the rune and understood it to the best of his ability.

’This lesson is about Sequences in general. To train my Sequence...’

He had to properly understand this nature, didn’t he?

He had to understand this nature and find ways to use his Sequence through it. Then, he could improve those things and learn further.

’What do I want to focus on right now?’

Raymond couldn’t decide it for him. Raymond could only help him if Gio showed him what he wanted to train.

’Firstly, "position" is a must.’

He had recently been experimenting with the Rune of Change. It was meant to control "Change" itself rather than any one specific thing, so shouldn’t its abilities move past matter control?

He wondered if he could change the "position" of an object, effectively controlling it with his mind. After many experiments, he was able to move objects just slightly. If he established a link as he did with the rocks he threw at the Crimson Ash Bear that time, it became much easier.

But what if he could do it without a link? What if he could purely control objects and wield them with incredible power?

’When I can properly move objects like telekinesis, it will be an incredibly useful power.’

He didn’t have any ranged capabilities without a gun at the moment. He had to fill that gap, and there wasn’t a more perfect way.

’Secondly, matter control.’

His ability to use the world around him to create weapons was the one he used most.

’The weapons created by Hekat’s power can be enhanced past their natural qualities. If I summon a sword made of dirt and transmute it into stone, it’ll be sharper and harder than any ordinary stone.’

When he was strong enough and had enough energy to transmute into higher quality materials, create alloys and complex structures, and properly support his creations, it would be a far more monstrous ability.

’I think Raymond’s help will be best used on these two abilities. I can sharpen non-combat abilities later in a more appropriate setting, but these need intensive training that will progress faster if he helps me.’

The first day, Gio came to a conclusion about how he wanted his future training to go. When he returned to Raymond the next day, he made those desires clear.

Raymond thought Gio had some sort of Elemental Sequence that controlled the earth. When Gio described its abilities as "transmutation" and "matter control," it surprised him quite a bit.

There was more versatility within its borders than Raymond thought there would be.

’I can do a lot more if he isn’t locked into only earth control.’

The ideas in Raymond’s mind were implemented immediately.

For "position," they started by training his grip strength.

The first problem that needed to be addressed was his grasp on the things he controlled. He needed to be able to grab them and swing them powerfully as if he were using the full strength of his entire body.

At the moment, his control was too weak. He couldn’t maintain his grip under pressure. It could be seen in his battle with the Crimson Ash Bear back then.

The stones he threw barely did damage because they didn’t have an incredible amount of momentum. By properly controlling "position," he could have caused far more damage in that attack; to the point where ending the battle within a few more moves would have been possible.

Other than grip, it was mostly a matter of how well Gio could control his energy. That was also the case for matter control.

The method was more straightforward. Gio already had the necessary knowledge, so he only needed to practice summoning objects, transmuting them, and empowering them.

Over and over again until he ran out of energy, he would summon sword after sword, trying to refine the final product further with every try. Raymond sat at his side and watched his energy carefully, giving advice when he could.

His role was important. He’d trained Alice in the past, so he knew how to help Gio. Their abilities were very different, but they were similar in the most important way.

And so, a regimen was formed.

First, Raymond would help Gio train his energy control and output. This was more basic training that any Sequencer would do.

After an hour of basic training, they moved on to training "position control" for an hour and a half before doing the same for "matter control."

Every day, Gio went to the training room like he was a student at school. Every day, he took Raymond’s lessons and internalized every little bit of knowledge he gained.

As the days turned into weeks, the amount of progress Gio made increased substantially. As a young talent, his growth existed on an exponential curve.

After the first week, he and Raymond started watching the ongoing missions as well. The three teams reached their destinations and started the work they were assigned.

Jax and Natalia would remain in their facility for as long as they could before they were discovered. The other two teams had mission timelines of around a week.

Gio and Raymond checked the operation center daily to ensure everything was going according to plan. If the Apocalypse Church caught onto their activities...

Well, at the very least, for the first two weeks, everything went according to plan, allowing Gio to focus only on his growth.

And hopefully, he could use this time to show Raymond his worth and earn a spot on the final mission.
