Chapter 107: Premonition [3]

Chapter 107: Premonition [3]

The moment they entered the next chamber, Raymond lost his chance to think forward. A barrage of energy blasts were fired towards them from the front, and the laser cannons were still forcing Raymond to cover the back.

Gio opened his eyes wide and looked through the space as Amaya moved around, dodging the shots aimed at them.

’I should be able to determine if there are traps on the floor.’

A white aura surrounded his irises. The Rune of Change influenced his vision.

The world slowed down, becoming visible again, but Gio was no longer viewing the world the same way. He wasn’t seeing through the same vision he ordinarily used.

His eyes only saw "change."

Everything went black. All things in motion or experiencing change were highlighted in the blackness like chalk on a chalkboard.

The ground was mostly covered in blackness as well, appearing and disappearing in waves as vibrations traveled through its surface.

And with those vibrations, anything displaced within the ground became clear in his eyes as well.

"Dive left!"

He didn’t take the time to explain his words. He said them, and purely on instinct, Amaya followed.

She threw her body to the side, twisting impossibly in the air to avoid the bullet she’d put herself in the path of. She and Gio tumbled on the ground several times before she was able to slide back to her feet.

"What?!"

"Trap!"

"Got it!"

She only needed to understand why. After a short exchange, she started moving again.

"Your comms should be connected to everyone else now that we’re close. If you see anything in front of the others, warn them as well!"

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Amaya focused on dodging. She didn’t want to engage in too much combat while carrying Gio. The rest, however, were already fighting.

Gio clicked his tongue. He knew they were being kept here on purpose, but there wasn’t a way around the onslaught unless they wanted their backs to be shredded while they ran.

’We have to make it out of here.’

"Can everyone hear me?!"

He yelled into his comms for any response.

"We hear you!"

Raymond spoke first.

Gio took the energy out of his eyes and memorized where every member of the team was standing before reactivating his ability. As his world went black, his voice became active.

"Jax, jump forward! Five meters!"

"Jason, straight through! Don’t divert!"

"Fly!"

The last command was given to Amaya. They flew into the air, narrowly avoiding a great explosion that erupted under them. Jax and Jason followed his orders as well, avoiding traps and charging forward.

But Gio didn’t stop.

He spoke to every member of the team. He felt his mind becoming weak from straining his eyes so much. His body started to become weaker as the Rune of Change drained his stamina. Such a precise use of the ability took more energy than normal, after all.

Blood started to leak from his eyes, but the team was pushing faster and faster. Their paths were determined through his eyes, and the enemies they faced along the way were defeated by their strength.

The Apocalypse Church of the current era had a glaring weakness. Their members were mostly ordinary people, and if they weren’t ordinary, the power of their Sequences wasn’t very strong.

Their higher-ranked members and the members of their main army had specially made suits that could stand the impact of a Sequencer’s attacks, but those weren’t widely available yet.

If those guns couldn’t be fired in time, the ones shooting them were just paper tigers.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

It was unintentional, but the chamber was destroyed by the time the entire team made it to the next tunnel. They ran without thinking about it, Raymond once again covering their backs.

They weren’t completely safe even after defeating the enemies in their paths. More of them appeared to give chase as if they could spawn in infinite numbers.

"How much further?" Raymond asked.

"Five or six kilometers," Amaya responded.

"How many more chambers?"

"Three including the one where the exit is."

Raymond nodded.

"Gio..."

He looked over, seeing the drying blood trails on his cheeks.

"Can you keep going?"

"Fight as little as possible and move as fast as possible. Don’t worry about me."

Raymond nodded again.

"Natalia, contact the zephyr. Tell them to evacuate immediately and send a pickup detail to Rendezvous Point Beta. Amaya, you remember the way back?"

"I do. Once we’re on the surface, it’ll take ten minutes."

"We need to get out of here in five, then."

Five kilometers in five minutes...

For them, it was possible to do it in ten easily, but five? When they were fighting?

Regardless, it had to be done. The longer they stayed in the facility, the more danger they were in.

"How long have you been here?" Gio asked.

His voice had to be heard through comms. They were moving too fast to use their ears directly.

"Maybe half a day. We’ve been fighting on and off, though. Most of the time was spent moving."

It made sense. They were being lured into thinking they were safe, so the facilities were all left mostly empty.

’But they didn’t launch a trap yet. Why has it taken them so long?’

Did they wait until Amaya and Gio were present as well?

’That’s impossible. Our approach couldn’t have been planned unless they expected us to know their secrets.’

They didn’t. The Apocalypse Church was too strict about its security.

’Then, whatever they prepared takes a long time to use.’

A twelve-hour period...

If they had prepared some sort of machine or device that needed to be moved, it could be justified. If it was just a matter of rigging the facility, the team would have been dead already.

’They want something more surefire. Something guaranteed to kill people who are strong enough to survive nukes.’

Radiation couldn’t affect them anymore and they had a myriad of ways to avoid, divert, or even simply tank the force of the explosion. In fact, even a beast like Yhien could create the same single-point impact as a nuke if it was given the opportunity.

Something else, something that was already in the Wasteland, something that took a long time to mobilize, something that had to be moved, and something strong enough to eradicate anything and anyone considered a target...

’It exists.’

And if it was being moved to this position all this time, then it had likely already arrived.

Five minutes.

’Yeah. If we want to survive, we need to be out of here in five minutes.’

Gio gritted his teeth and summoned the power of Hekat as the team rushed into the next chamber.

For them to escape as efficiently as possible, his job was probably the most important.

He had to focus.

He felt the strain on his eyes again. He felt the strain on his mind as well.

However, neither of these was unwelcomed.

To grow, one had to suffer. To grow, one had to use one’s abilities to their limit and break that limit apart.

To survive through this situation, he had to do the same things.

Battle broke out once again, and Gio was ready.

He would not die in a scheme like this.
