A two-story wooden house stood lonesomely at the fringe of the forest, with thick curtains drawn across the windows.
Vines and moss had corroded the ironwood that formed the main part of the architecture, making it look somewhat aged.
The darkness of the night descended silently, with several shadows appearing outside the villa.
“Are we sure this is the place?”
The speaker had a deep voice, a pair of azure eyes, high nose bridge, bushy beard, black trench coat, and a belt that held numerous hidden compartments filled with various weapons and potions.
This was a ‘Demon Hunter’!
“It’s confirmed.
...
The owner, Jaiyes, is a covert demon worshipper!”
Replied a slightly younger female demon hunter.
She had golden curly hair and a gentle appearance, but the huge cleaver in her hand was not to be trifled with.
“Gailin, when you see the signal, cast ‘Illumination’ first!”
Demon Hunter Instructor ‘Felix’ commanded.
He was a level 16 demon hunter, rightfully considered a master.
However, he, who was dedicated to the path of demon hunting, couldn’t cast spells, whereas Gailin, in addition to her level 9 demon hunter rank, also had a level 5 warlock profession.
The magical power in her bloodline was enough to cast a few minor spells.
“Alright.”
Gailin nodded in reply.
They didn’t have to wait long under the silent night sky.
Bang!
A few minutes later, the piercing sound of shattered glass rang out as the demon hunters hidden in the surroundings launched their assault!
“Move!”
Felix roared and burst into the house with his female apprentice.
Crack!
The decrepit black wooden door was effortlessly broken down, and without missing a beat, Gailin quickly uttered a few syllables, “Light!”
A bright light sphere appeared in front of her instantly, emitting a high-intensity glow like an incandescent lamp that illuminated an area of several meters.
If there were demons or abyssal creatures, this bright light could at least interfere with them, even if it couldn’t injure them.
“Over here…”
Felix sniffed the air and ran towards a hall.
The strong smell of blood filled the air.
Gailin’s eyes fell upon an altar in the center immediately.
It was made of bones, some were obviously animal bones while some were human.
Atop the bone altar were varying strange offerings; there were dried up entrails, clustered frog eggs, and claws from unknown creatures.
“A typical demon altar, Jaiyes is indeed a demon worshipper!”
Felix’s face turned grave: “Be careful!”
He pulled out a silver dagger, its blade etched with several runes, his gaze quickly sweeping across the room, checking behind curtains, cabinets, and other places where people could hide.
“Something’s not right…”
Gailin hastily shielded herself with a ‘Shift Field’, a spell innate to her bloodline.
It could deflect some physical attacks, with the limit being roughly the equivalent of a normal person’s full-force swing.
She suddenly thought of the demon hunters who initiated the raid, but they had gone silent.
“Master…help…”
A weak plea came from behind another crimson wooden door.
“Could he have finished the demon sacrificing ritual?”
Gailin’s voice trembled.
Even the most ordinary ‘demon creatures’ usually had a level above 10, not something a rookie like her could handle.
What the apprentice realised, was the same thing that crossed Felix’s mind.
His expression turned stern, and on his left hand, a flame of black fire burned.
From within it, a dark chain emerged.
‘Anti-magic chain’!
This was a power that could only be awakened by demon hunters above level 10, following a special ‘trial’.
Its function was to greatly limit creatures like demons, capable of effortlessly trapping the magic power within a demon.
The strength of the chain was directly proportional to the will and spirit of Demon Hunting Masters.
Some special rituals could also enhance the strength of the chain.
Some Demon Hunting Masters could even use their anti-magic chains to confine legendary-grade demons for a moment!
Those were horrifying creatures above level 20!
Felix held the chain and a silver short blade, kicking open the door from which the cries for help emanated.
“Master…
save me!”
On the table, a severed head, seeing them arrive, made a joyful noise.
It had long since been separated from its neck, with a pool of blood spreading across the table and continuously dripping onto the carpet.
“Uh…”
Seeing this scene, even Gailin, a female Demon Hunter, momentarily lost her spirit, and the light orb she had been maintaining instantly extinguished.
Whoosh!
The surroundings suddenly plunged into complete darkness.
A wind arose suddenly!
Something inexplicable seemed to be attacking.
“Ah!”
Gailin heard her mentor’s cry of pain and quickly uttered: “Light!”
The light reappeared.
She saw the struggling head on the table stop, she saw her mentor half-kneeling on the ground, with dark red blood seeping through his chest.
“The master of this place…
he has transformed into a half-demon!
He possesses extremely strange abilities…”
Felix quickly pulled out a potion and sprinkled it on his wound.
Hissss!
With a white smoke rising, his bleeding was quickly stopped, and the wound seemed as though it had been cauterized, fusing together.
The trembling mentor stood up, twitching at the corner of his mouth, and said, “He’s here…
but he’s afraid of the light…”
“What do we do?”
Gailin drew her weapon, her voice trembling.
“It’s very good at hiding…
we need to find it out!”
The anti-magic chain of black color dangled from Felix’s left hand and coiled on the ground like a snake.
Seconds later, his expression turned to surprise: “We need to get out of here first.”
Gailin’s heart drummed, if her mentor’s anti-magic chain couldn’t find the target, it was quite clear that the half-demon’s strength exceeded his expectations.
‘He has strange abilities, he attacks in the dark…
maybe we can lure him out with another attempt?’
‘No…
that would be too dangerous.’
Gailin looked at her mentor’s expression, confirmed that she hadn’t been set up with a trap, she couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief.
“Stay close to me.”
Felix led Gailin, slowly backing towards the door they came from.
The red wooden door opened, giving a direct view of the flesh and blood altar in the hall.
“After we get out, we must find the person who posted this.
This task obviously exceeds its difficulty level!”
Felix murmured softly, just as he was about to move past the door, his right hand quickly dropped, sticking the silver short blade into the red door.
“Ah!”
An ear-piercing scream was heard, with a large amount of black blood spouting from the puncture.
The door automatically closed, attempting to trap Felix, but he had already deftly retreated.
“Ah!”
Gailin looked at the closed door and let out a cry.
So the half-demon had been behind the door all this time!
Its body seemed to have melted and smeared all over the back of the door, multiple chunks of flesh continuously writhing, revealing countless resentful eyes, glaring at the two Demon Hunters.
