Chapter 268: Chapter 189: Differences Between Men and Women

Fushimi Roku finally realized something was off. The tea trees in the backyard were indeed tea trees, and Wulin Temple’s wooden house was indeed a wooden house, but who could say what they were made of... Maybe this eerie place was nothing more than a giant petri dish, with tree men buried beneath the tea garden, and the fence boards carved from tree men.

"D-Don’t be afraid!"

Minamoto Tamako’s teeth chattered, her tongue unable to articulate properly, but she still wanted to comfort her partner, "We only had one cup, after all, the potency of a drug depends on the dosage... A minuscule dose of poison isn’t really poison..."

Fushimi Roku, being an S-level Intelligence Attribute, knew that at this pivotal moment, if he didn’t use his brain now, he’d never get the chance again. His mind raced, and he bolted, with Minamoto Tamako close behind, asking as they ran, "Where are we going?"

"To find Fukuyama Toshin!"

Fushimi Roku’s thoughts were clear. Doctor Fukuyama’s vice was "Parasitic Man" — it didn’t take much imagination to know that the "Fukuyama Family" Oogami Nui spoke of referred to Fukuyama Toshin. At the very least, Fukuyama Toshin was a member of the Fukuyama Family, and was likely trading with the Aum Truth Sect, which in turn supplied Ye Tea to Oogami Nui for his deceptive schemes.

Since Oogami Nui could use mysterious little pills to suppress side effects, it indicated that Fukuyama Toshin must have the ’antidote.’

Of course, this was just his guess. This wasn’t a TV show; it was entirely possible there was no antidote, in which case, they could only blame their own bad luck.

Minamoto Tamako also thought of this, and quickly sprinted, the two of them charging up the stairs one after the other. Fushimi Roku took the lead and kicked open Fukuyama Toshin’s door — only to find the room empty, with just a few simple pieces of furniture and no sign of anyone.

"Where is he?"

Minamoto Tamako, unwilling to give up, rummaged through everything, searching for the ’red little pill’ mentioned by her assistant, but found nothing.

Fushimi Roku didn’t bother going downstairs to look for anyone. The Wulin Temple was vast, and if Fukuyama Toshin was determined to play hide-and-seek with them, he could just escape into the deep mountains. Searching for him now was meaningless, only wasting time.

He thought for a moment and then started undressing.

Seeing this, Minamoto Tamako squeaked, her face turning red as she covered her eyes and peeked through her fingers, "W-What are you doing?"

"Help me check if there’s anything unusual on my body," Fushimi Roku said grimly, disregarding any concern about gender differences, "You’re right — toxicity depends on the dosage. We came into contact with the tree man at the pavilion earlier, and nothing happened then; maybe nothing will happen now."

Upon hearing this, Minamoto Tamako felt a sense of relief; she had feared that Fushimi Roku wanted to indulge in a final reckless act and planned to run naked in the rain or something. She had been scared and worried, and a bit indignant. Now, knowing there was still hope, she exhaled in relief, though she couldn’t help but feel a tinge of absurd disappointment.

"What are you daydreaming about?!"

Fushimi Roku reprimanded her, pulling Minamoto Tamako back to reality. She hastily spread her fingers wider to closely inspect Fushimi Roku’s body — he was down to just underwear, revealing strong and muscular form, with a physique statuesque like the bodies depicted in sculptures of Ancient Rome.

How frustrating, this guy must be secretly working out behind her back!

As Minamoto Tamako checked him, her mind couldn’t help but wander. After a thorough inspection, she discovered a patch of red spots on the back of Fushimi Roku’s neck, resembling a rash from an allergic reaction.

She immediately reported, "There’s a red rash on the back of your neck..."

"Anything else?" Fushimi Roku pressed.

"Beyond that, I can’t see anything," Minamoto Tamako replied instinctively.

"What are you thinking? I can check that myself!" Fushimi Roku said, pulling aside his underwear to inspect his private area. Upon confirming everything was fine, he was relieved.

"One cup might not be a problem; we should be safe now," Minamoto Tamako turned her face away, fiddling with her fingers to suggest to Fushimi Roku that he could get dressed.

"Not necessarily."

Fushimi Roku, looking serious, grabbed his pants and fastened his belt as he spoke, "Didn’t you notice the smell in the hall? It’s thick enough to fog the air... I suspect it’s a spore-like fungus, airborne, that reacts with the Ye Tea fungus in the body."

"What’s Yaksha fungus?" Minamoto Tamako asked.

"Yecha Fungus, it’s a name I came up with for clarity, don’t mind those details," Fushimi Roku said, putting on his shirt, buttoning it, and cocking his handgun, "Now, I’m afraid we’re in real trouble."

"Then won’t hiding upstairs keep us safe?"

After speaking, Minamoto Tamako slapped her forehead, recalling something crucial, and anxiously said, "Miss Yazaki and Lady Nakako are still downstairs! They also drank Ye Tea, if they stay down there, something might happen..."

"Call them up," Fushimi Roku replied.

The two of them left the room and stood in the hallway, looking downward. A thin green mist wafted at the corner of the stairway, like a semi-transparent veil that swayed without rising.

"Lady Nakako! Miss Yazaki! Ah Xuan!"

Minamoto Tamako cupped her hands around her mouth and shouted downstairs, "It’s dangerous down there! Please, come up quickly!"

Despite shouting for a while, there was no response, and her heart suddenly sank with a bad premonition.

A faint wind whistled by, mixing with familiar murmurs. The lights on the first floor suddenly went out; they stood in the hallway, peering downward, where the swirling mist looked like an abyss.

Noticing this, Minamoto Tamako paused for a moment, returned to Fukuyama Toshin’s room, and found a flashlight. She took a deep breath, swallowed hard, ready to head downstairs alone.

Fushimi Roku grabbed her, frowning, "What are you doing?"

"Of course, I’m going to bring Miss Yazaki and the others back," Minamoto Tamako said with firm resolve. "Don’t worry, nothing will happen to me. Ye Tea only causes hallucinations in women, just seeing spirits, nothing fatal anyway."

She paused, then continued, "You’re male, and the Ye Tea might turn you into a tree man, you might end up dead like my assistant did; you should just wait upstairs for me, there’s no need to take risks."

Fushimi Roku wanted to persuade her further, honestly indifferent about the fate of Yazaki Momo and the others, but Minamoto Tamako was unmoved. If she could be persuaded, she wouldn’t be Minamoto Tamako.

They exchanged glances, and Fushimi Roku averted his eyes, considering knocking her out to forcibly stop her, but if something happened to Yazaki Momo and the others, Minamoto Tamako might carry that guilt forever.

With no alternative, Fushimi Roku could only sigh and turn the gun around, handing the grip to Minamoto Tamako, advising her, "Be safe, don’t be reckless. If there’s danger, call for me."

Minamoto Tamako took the police gun, nodded heavily. She wanted to say thank you but felt it was unnecessary. After hesitating for a long time, she finally just managed to say:

"Wait for me, I’ll be back soon."
