Chapter 215: Chapter 136: Living Up to Expectations
"The Master is looking for me?"
Fushimi Roku was half lying on the bed, pretending to read a scripture, but in fact, he was daydreaming about what the first person who drank milk did to the cow. Otomachi Hayashi walked in, seeing this scene, he felt increasingly respectful, thinking the Master must have wanted to reward Roku-kun, and hurriedly relayed the message.
"Yes, Roku-kun has been performing outstandingly lately. Maybe you’ll be promoted early, and if you’re lucky, the Master might recommend you to the headquarters for training."
Otomachi Hayashi sincerely felt happy for his friend.
Fushimi Roku casually put down the scripture, pondered for a moment, then suddenly asked, "How has Aki been doing lately?"
Upon hearing this, Otomachi Hayashi pursed his lips and said, "Him? He’s been the same as always, not devout enough to the Church. The Master says he’s been hiding something, so he got punished... He’s probably in the reflection room now, isn’t he?"
"Oh! He deserves it," Fushimi Roku nodded and asked again, "What about Horie-kun?"
"Who?" Otomachi Hayashi paused.
"That young man who joined the Church at the same time as me, lived in the same container, usually quiet, with very fair skin... ring a bell?"
"I remember, the Master summoned him before, but he hasn’t returned..." Otomachi Hayashi’s voice lowered, his expression slightly stiffened.
"It’s been so long, why hasn’t he returned?" Fushimi Roku looked worried, as if truly concerned for Horie Kei: "Did he fail the initiation test and was expelled by the Master?"
"No way, the Master said, as long as you’re persistent, determined, and wholeheartedly believe in the Church, you’d definitely pass the initiation test!" Otomachi Hayashi explained.
"Then why hasn’t he come back? Did he give up?" Fushimi Roku sighed again, "What a good young man, and he just left like that."
Otomachi Hayashi stood at the door, his face shifting. Through Fushimi Roku’s two sentences, he linked many bad things — believers disappearing wasn’t unprecedented, a believer was drowned by the Master before, the body buried behind the factory.
Later, some believers wanted to escape the Church because of it, all were killed by the Master using superpower, the scene was extremely tragic, with limbs scattered all around. Back then, Otomachi Hayashi was responsible for the cleanup, it left a serious psychological shadow.
"Gentlemen, look closely, this is the consequence of betraying the religion."
The Master’s words echoed in his ears like a nightmare.
"Well, now is not the time to think about this," Fushimi Roku put down the scripture, stood up, and adjusted the black robe on his body: "Let’s go, don’t keep the Master waiting."
"Hold on—"
Otomachi Hayashi pressed on Fushimi Roku’s shoulder, swallowed, and nervously said: "You, you wait a minute, don’t be in a hurry, wait ten minutes for me... I’ll be back right away, just stay here... being late by just ten minutes, the Master won’t blame you."
Saying so, he turned and ran.
Fushimi Roku called after Otomachi Hayashi: "Where are you going?" The latter ignored him completely, ran all the way outside the factory, went straight to the sentry dormitory, and knocked on the door to ask where today’s guard was.
"Ah, the Master temporarily dispatched him, said there’s a special task..."
Upon hearing this, Otomachi Hayashi stood frozen, as if struck by lightning.
If it was just a simple meeting, why would the Master need a sentry? If the Master had other plans, Roku-kun might be in danger!
Otomachi Hayashi couldn’t understand, punishing those heretics was one thing, but why target Roku-kun? Roku-kun was also a devout believer, willing to sacrifice for the truth... He couldn’t bear to see Roku-kun die.
Otomachi Hayashi hurried back to the factory, informed Fushimi Roku of the news, urging him to escape with him — there was a hole on the east side of the factory’s fence, crawl through there and no one would notice, when the time comes, he would drive to the exit for a rendezvous, taking Fushimi Roku out of Arakawa Suburb!
Fushimi Roku remained calm after hearing this, shook his head.
In Otomachi Hayashi’s astonished gaze, Fushimi Roku said with compassion: "If the Master punishes me for my mistake, I am willing to die; if the Master kills me for personal gain, I am willing to feed myself to the tiger, awakening the Master’s conscience, bringing him back to the right path, to continue leading everyone in the pursuit of truth."
Having said that, he walked out of the room without hesitation, heading to the second floor where the Master lived alone.
Otomachi Hayashi watched Fushimi Roku’s back, his head buzzing. He always thought the saints in the scriptures were too remote, yet now he sees such a person in real life... His steadfast pursuit of the way made Otomachi Hayashi ashamed, and he couldn’t help but want to follow.
But on second thought, he felt it was not worth it to let such a saintly person as Roku-kun die, to exchange for the conscience of the Master.
Moreover, whether the Master has a conscience is still debatable, after all, he is someone beyond worldly norms, not bound by secular morals, and often does things incomprehensible to believers... like drinking fine wine, eating Wagyu beef, having a large number of female believers serve him in bed, and so on.
Otomachi Hayashi hurried to catch up, persuading, "But, but... for the sake of safety, Roku-kun should escape!"
"I have long placed personal safety outside myself," Fushimi Roku said with a tragic heroism, as he walked: "It is said that knowing the truth in the morning, one would be willing to die in the evening. Perhaps my existence is to let the Master have an epiphany."
Hearing this, Otomachi Hayashi knew he couldn’t persuade him and instead asked: "Then... then what if, hypothetically, the Master doesn’t necessarily do anything to you... If you really encounter misfortune, do you have any last wishes?"
Fushimi Roku paused, pretended to meditate for a moment, and said: "If possible, I want to say goodbye to the sword my father entrusted to me before I die."
Otomachi Hayashi secretly noted this down; he escorted Fushimi Roku all the way to the second floor, watching helplessly as Fushimi Roku lifted the red curtain, his back disappearing behind the glass door, feeling as though a part of his heart was missing.
He stood at the stairway, looking upward for a while, not hearing any gunshots, he slightly relaxed.
Before Otomachi Hayashi could feel relieved, a sentry came suddenly down from the second floor, carrying a rifle. His heart skipped a beat, stepping forward and asking what happened upstairs. The latter brushed past him rudely, ignoring him completely, and left the factory directly.
Seeing this, Otomachi Hayashi had a bad feeling. He gritted his teeth, ran back to his dormitory, retrieved that ancient sword from under the bed, sat quietly by the bed for a moment, then ran back to the stairway.
Otomachi Hayashi had made up his mind, once gunfire rang out from upstairs, he would take the sword and go to see Mr. Fushimi one last time.
Mr. Fushimi had entrusted this sword to him back then; now it was his time to prove himself worthy.
Even if it meant betraying the religion, it was worth it.
