Chapter 150: Chapter 72 Holding the Chess
With a creak, the office door was pushed open. The officers at the station saw that the visitor was Fushimi Roku and casually greeted him. As he passed by, everyone handed over their investigation reports, dossiers, and files.
"Thanks for your hard work."
"We’re counting on you, Mr. Fushimi."
"At this rate, you’ll definitely make it through your initial training smoothly."
They considered themselves seniors and said a few insincere words of encouragement as they passed on their work to the junior.
Fushimi Roku accepted everything with a respectful attitude, much like a criminal police officer still in training.
Now he already had his own workstation, located in the station’s storage room. In addition to his usual work, he would also run errands for the officers.
Fushimi Roku held a thick stack of documents, using his shoulder to nudge open the storeroom door.
He pushed aside the shelves and pulled back the curtain, revealing three walls covered with a giant whiteboard, crammed with information and plastered with layers of sticky notes. Numerous red and blue threads intertwined on the board, ultimately converging on several photographs of faces.
Ever since Minamoto Tamako was determined to thoroughly investigate, Fushimi Roku was forced to get involved as well—all recent files filed in the archives had passed through his hands.
By routine, he should now sit down and process this pile of documents, carefully sifting for useful information from recent investigations while subtly altering unfavorable parts...
But today was different. Fushimi Roku casually placed the documents on the shelf and quickly scanned the three walls with his eyes.
...
"Scandal! Numerous women harmed, acquitted and released in court"
This was the headline of a side news story published by a third-rate newspaper on the day Kamei Yuusaku was released.
The author linked several recent murder cases in Sugamo to Kamei Yuusaku, using suggestive writing to assert that Kamei Yuusaku was the murderer, providing detailed interpersonal relationships and crime details... Unsurprisingly, this report did not cause much of a stir.
After all, it’s Sugamo! A little trouble is quite normal.
...
Fushimi Roku opened the news clippings book hanging on the wall, which was already filled with a thick pile of paper.
He knew very well that a single speculative report wouldn’t cause much of a ripple. Therefore, from the beginning, he never intended to make a sensation but instead approached it like slowly boiling a frog in warm water.
Kamei Yuusaku stealing from clothing stores, Kamei Yuusaku robbing convenience stores, Kamei Yuusaku throwing objects from high places to injure people, Kamei Yuusaku leading an old lady through a red light... All recent cases in the Toshima District, big or small, were associated with Kamei Yuusaku.
A blackened reputation is still a reputation; he aimed to create a public enemy to complete the task of "inspiring 100 perfect crimes."
In Fushimi Roku’s original plan, it would take some time for public opinion to boil over.
But just last night, Minamoto Tamako really found some crucial clues in the mountains of files—Fushimi Roku still wasn’t clear on what exactly Minamoto Tamako had uncovered, only that the investigation had suddenly halted.
With the plan interrupted, he had no choice but to rush to notify the newspaper to print the explosive report before Minamoto Tamako contacted Kujo Yua:
-- "The Demon Who Killed Little Girls"
Not long ago, before Yamaguchi Takashi was dismissed, the Feng Island Police Station was busy investigating a case of child murder. Once Yamaguchi Takashi was imprisoned, the investigation naturally stalled, and the new section chief was unwilling to help clean up the mess.
Such a heinous case, whoever gets involved suffers social death.
Fushimi Roku took a deep breath. Although the timing was a bit rushed, with the arrow on the string, he had to shoot. The First Investigation Division had already set out to catch someone, and he needed to act too.
If Kamei Yuusaku were to fall into Kujo Yua’s hands, he’d have no chance to perform.
Fushimi Roku first used a prepaid phone to call Zhao Chunshu, continuing to order some new ’special services’; then he used a paper tube and plastic wrap to make a simple voice changer and called Kazama Tatsuya’s number.
"Moses?" A slightly puzzled voice of Kazama Tatsuya came from the receiver.
"Kamei Yuusaku is about to be doomed, don’t you want to avoid being dragged down by him?" Fushimi Roku said through the simple voice changer, in a gruff voice.
...
"Kamei Yuusaku is about to be doomed, don’t you want to avoid being dragged down by him?"
A muffled, cold voice came through the receiver, indistinguishable in gender.
Kazama Tatsuya stood in his living room, clutching the receiver. He glanced instinctively at the bedroom door and lowered his voice to ask, "Who are you?"
"It’s not important who I am. What matters is that Kujo Yua has discovered ’that thing.’ You’d better find him before Kamei Yuusaku is caught."
"Are you Fushimi Roku?" Kazama Tatsuya asked.
"Guessing wildly is meaningless," the other party said without any fluctuation in tone. "I suggest you set off now and follow my instructions. You don’t need to personally kill; just bring him to the designated location, and the rest will have nothing to do with you."
The voice paused, adding, "I assure you, Kamei Yuusaku will completely disappear."
"Why should I believe you?" Kazama Tatsuya questioned.
"You have no choice."
Fushimi Roku finished and hung up the phone. He switched to another phone, called Kamei Yuusaku, and informed him that the First Investigation Division was about to make an arrest, urging him to flee quickly. He hung up before Kamei Yuusaku could respond and set all phones to silent mode.
After doing so, Fushimi Roku sighed, pushed aside the documents on his desk, and set up a game of shogi.
...
Kazama Tatsuya called back but received no response. He sent a pager message to query his colleagues and learned that Kujo Yua had indeed gone to the station, which made his heart sink. He quickly called Kamei Yuusaku, only to find the line busy.
"Pick up the phone!"
He sent another page and dialed again. This time the call went through, and he asked Kamei Yuusaku where he was. The latter replied leisurely, ’At home.’
"Listen to me, something’s happened, Kujo Yua is investigating you. This time is different from last, I can’t cover it up. Now go outside, catch a cab, and wait for me in the Harbor District. I’ll contact a snakehead for you, and then we’re even..."
"No."
"No? Didn’t you say you loved her? Now’s your time to prove it; either put a bullet in your head or find a way to get as far away as possible!" Kazama Tatsuya urged.
"It’s too late... unless you come to get me, I can’t go anywhere."
Kamei Yuusaku drew the curtains. As he looked down, protesters were flooding into the building, and loud knocks were coming persistently from the back door. Someone shouted his name, urging him to come out quickly.
This morning, the Feng Island Morning News published a headline story about the child murder case. The victims’ families went to the police station seeking justice, but were intercepted halfway by a group claiming to be criminal police, who publicly threatened them to ’mind your own business.’
If it had been a private conversation, it might not have blown up so big. The key was those ’criminal police’ using loudspeakers to insult West Sugamo as a ’garbage dump’ and describe the residents as ’inferior people.’
After several hours of fermenting, the matter even reached the Ikebukuro District. Many found the name ’Kamei Yuusaku’ somewhat familiar, and upon checking the newspapers, discovered his long list of misdeeds. Some newspapers even revealed that Kamei Yuusaku arrogantly claimed in the interrogation room, ’Kill one person for each day I’m detained.’
A bearded criminal police stood in the middle of the street, shouting with a loudspeaker:
"Listen up! Mr. Kamei is a key witness for the police. The Police Department will come to fetch him soon, and if any of you scoundrels dare to stir up trouble again, you’ll be arrested for obstructing official duties!"
Click.
In the storeroom, Fushimi Roku pushed a pawn with his chess piece.
