Chapter 47: Chapter 47: The Run of Freedom_1
Yokosuka Port, inside the U.S. Army Base in Japan.
The bodies from Okubo Nursing Home were all transferred to the autopsy room here.
Each body was naked, lying on the table, illuminated by the lights.
The forensic experts were used to scenes like this and inspected the bodies in detail like they were examining lab rats, talking softly from time to time, with occasional smiles on their faces.
Commander Walter personally oversaw the matter.
He stood at the entrance of the autopsy room, with a commanding presence, but he didn’t speak. Instead, he listened as Colonel Javier interrogated Oda Nobuteru and Fujii Mitsuki about the events that had occurred.
Some things, after being reported in writing, still needed to be recounted by the people involved, lest any detail was omitted and went unrecorded.
Both men were terribly frightened.
In Japan, anyone would feel uneasy when suddenly confronted by U.S. soldiers, including the Prime Minister.
This was the unavoidable situation in a semi-colonial country.
"That’s how the events unfolded; it was all Chief Oda’s idea, it has nothing to do with me. I was merely blinded by fame and fortune and came to that conclusion," Fujii Mitsuki regretted inwardly, selling out his colleague to save his own life, placing all the blame on Oda Nobuteru.
Though the idea was indeed conceived by Oda Nobuteru, and he had implied that Fujii Mitsuki should act accordingly, Oda Nobuteru still felt the anger of betrayal, cursing Fujii as a scoundrel in his heart.
Javier, who had trained in specialized lie detection skills, confirmed that the two were not lying, and then waved his hand, "Take them away."
Some soldiers immediately dragged them away.
He turned to Walter and said, "Commander Walter, do you need me to report the situation again?"
"No need, Colonel Javier, you may leave."
Walter dismissed the offer with a wave of his hand. His hearing was still sharp, and he had heard everything quite clearly.
He didn’t care about the schemes of Fujii Mitsuki or Oda Nobuteru. All he cared about was one thing: was this a weapon?
If so, who created the weapon?
Could it have been a major power from the East?
Walter thought this was unlikely. If it were experimental weapons, the opponent would not have conducted tests in Japan. He was more inclined to believe that a Right-wing Financial Group was secretly developing weapons.
Since the Five Star Emperor had left Japan, America’s control over Japan had weakened, losing total colonial control.
After all, the military prowess of the Five Star Emperor depended on whether his ingenious plans were effective; it was unpredictable, fluctuating wildly.
But his political skill was beyond doubt, and Japan did not have the slightest chance to break free from American control.
All matters, including left-wing and Right-wing forces, danced within the lines planned by the Five Star Emperor.
The United States isn’t what it used to be.
Walter frowned, pondering his next move.
After a while, the forensic expert came over with the conclusions. "Commander Walter, based on our examination, some people’s hearts show signs of being clutched, and others have had their blood vessels and nerves directly severed. It seems that the weapon doesn’t attack the human body extensively, but targets specific parts of an individual’s body. This can be multiple areas or a singular one. Moreover, the damage caused by this weapon to the organs is limited. Judging by the destruction of the organs, the force is about forty-nine kilograms. This is based on the damage observed on the known bodies. Whether the opponent can increase that force, I cannot judge."
"Good, I understand."
Walter nodded. He had made a decision in his mind to hand over the investigation to the people from the CIA.
U.S. Forces Japan and the CIA were not in a hierarchical relationship, but Walter knew that the head of the CIA in Japan belonged to the same political party as him.
They were all part of the Democratic Party.
With that connection, he just needed to slip them some money to get their help in searching for those suspect consortia.
Walter was greedy, but he still knew he had to get things done.
He planned to find the secret weapon-developing Right-wing Financial Groups and plunder their research outcomes, presenting them as achievements of the U.S. Seventh Fleet to continue to ask for research funding from across the ocean.
Thus, he would consolidate his power within the Seventh Fleet.
...
「Nightfall. Adachi District, Ayase.」
Aozawa was out for a night run.
A gray filter enveloped the entire street, streetlights, and even the moon in the sky seemed to be shrouded in gray.
He was not wearing any clothes.
Running naked through the busy commercial street, in a world where Time Suspension was in effect and there was no breeze, he still felt a chill running from his feet to his head.
Aozawa experienced the sensation known as freedom.
Long ago, he had imagined running through the streets wearing nothing at all.
But at that time, he didn’t have the ability to make it a reality. Running like that would have surely caused others to regard him as an exhibitionist.
Aozawa was too thin-skinned to bear such a reputation and lacked the courage to do such a thing.
Only when time stood still, and no one in the world could discover his actions, could he run unrestrained.
He enjoyed the posture of running freely naked in front of people, showing off his genitals even in front of women without causing screams or cries of "pervert" or anything similar.
The only downside was needing to count how long he ran by himself, since his phone alarm could not alert him.
To avoid accidents, Aozawa first ran for half an hour before he decided to strip and then continued to run outside for another half hour.
He gave himself ample time to avoid the embarrassment of not getting dressed again if the Time Suspension ended unexpectedly.
As Aozawa ran back to where he had left his clothes, he saw a sleeping pit bull in the yard that seemed to be enjoying a very sound sleep.
He climbed over the fence, kicked the pit bull’s head, then vaulted out of the yard to get dressed, leisurely making his way around to the side.
When Time Suspension ended, the sleeping pit bull immediately felt a pain in its head and woke up, scanning its surroundings but seeing no enemy.
It barked furiously nonetheless.
Aozawa, in the back alley, heard the barking. He also saw four people from the brightly lit second-floor window who, without bothering to dress properly, hurried down the drainpipe and skillfully climbed the wall.
Seeing Aozawa outside, the four looked embarrassed. No one spoke; they quickly dressed and left.
On the second floor, Mrs. Ishimura stared at Aozawa unashamedly. Her face was flushed with a moist glow in the light, and her snow-white skin was adorned with two silver rings on her chest, like nose rings worn by water buffaloes. She blinked.
Aozawa turned and walked towards his home. I can’t afford to provoke her.
Before he reached home, Aozawa’s mobile phone in his pocket vibrated. Taking it out, he saw it was a message from the young Miss.
"What are you doing?"
"I’ve just finished my night run."
Aozawa took a photo of his surroundings and sent it to Phoenix Academy Maggie, "Have you finished your classes for today?"
"Not yet. I have more tonight. I’m sneaking a message while eating dinner."
Phoenix Academy Maggie also took a photo of her dinner and said, "Do you know about the incident at the Okubo Nursing Home?"
"Not really."
Aozawa feigned ignorance and texted back, "What happened?"
