Chapter 535: Chapter 461: Courtesy before Force, Double-Dealing, Returning the Original Item (7100 words, two-in-one for monthly pass)
Asano Kamisaku knew the only way to recoup his losses was to snatch back the target project or to force the person who had stolen the project from him to provide financial compensation, or to make the other party accept his investment in a joint development endeavor.
To achieve any of these three goals, official channels were out of the question. After all, those shell companies managed to secure multiple projects by having solid government relations. If he could have matched their influence, he wouldn’t be in such a passive position.
So, a legal approach was not an option.
That left only one alternative: resorting to underhanded tactics.
As a native of Sapporo City, he somewhat held the status of a local strongman. During the initial establishment and development of his company, he hadn’t refrained from using some dark methods for his primitive accumulation.
In the field he knew best, he was quite confident.
He had already investigated the company named Beiyuan Construction Co., Ltd, which had taken the project he had set his heart on. It was a small, local firm that had been established not long ago and was sold in a package deal last month. Now, its president was a young man named Ito Kayo.
This individual was rather mysterious, or perhaps it was beyond Asano’s capabilities to unearth detailed background information on him. All he knew was that he was from Tokyo, exceptionally capable in his work, and had maintained the normal operations of Beiyuan Construction Co., Ltd after taking over.
Asano Kamisaku speculated that Ito Kayo might be the son of some major bureaucrat or a puppet for some significant figure. But this didn’t intimidate him; after all, a powerful background didn’t dictate everything. Larger backgrounds often came with more concerns unless the background was extraordinarily powerful, which was an infrequent occurrence.
Moreover, those with nothing to lose don’t fear those who have something to lose. As a self-made man from humble beginnings, he was well aware that his success was built on his willingness to risk everything. Of course, whether or not he was still willing to risk it all wasn’t important; what mattered was convincing others that he was capable of doing so, forcing them to compromise.
Even if the situation turned out to be unmanageable in the end, he could simply yield. He couldn’t afford to surrender without putting up a fight first.
He intended to start with cordial negotiation before resorting to forceful measures. If he couldn’t come to an agreement with Ito, then he would apply pressure.
So, tonight, he brought along a bodyguard and two gifts to visit Ito’s residence.
"Wait for me outside," he instructed his driver and bodyguard, then proceeded to Ito’s front door with the gifts and pressed the doorbell.
"Ding-dong! Ding-dong!"
A moment later, the door opened, and Ito Kayo, freshly bathed and in a bathrobe, looked puzzledly at the uninvited guest, "Hello, may I ask who you are..."
Asano Kamisaku, in his early forties, with sallow skin, cropped hair, and a face full of flesh, could not conceal his rough, uncouth aura even in a suit.
He didn’t give off the impression of being a good person.
"President Ito, I’m Asano Kamisaku. My apologies for imposing without notice," Asano said as he took out a prepared business card from his pocket with one hand and handed it over.
After taking a look at it, Ito recognized the identity of the president of Asano Construction Corporation, "May I ask what brings President Asano here?"
"May I come in to talk?" asked Asano.
Ito nodded, "Please, come in."
"Thank you," Asano bowed slightly, then followed Ito inside after taking off his shoes, placing the gifts on the coffee table, and sitting on the sofa.
Ito poured him a glass of water, "We only have water at home, I hope it’s okay for President Asano."
"Water is good, water is healthy," Asano chuckled and took a sip after receiving the glass.
With a slight smile, Ito sat down on the opposite sofa and said, "I don’t know what brings President Asano here so late at night. Please, speak freely."
"Ah," Asano’s smile faded as he sighed, placed the water glass down, and said, "First of all, congratulations to Mr. Ito for securing the amusement park construction project in the East District. I must admit, I was quite interested in this project from the beginning, and I went through quite some trouble, giving many gifts, but alas... it wasn’t meant to be."
He shook his head with a look of resignation.
"I’m truly sorry, I wasn’t aware of that," Ito Kayo was taken aback and repeatedly apologized with regret, "I understand your desire to contribute to your hometown, President Asano. Rest assured, since I’ve fortunately secured this project, I will definitely do it well."
Ito could guess the reason for Asano’s visit, but he had no choice but to feign ignorance, as he was just an employee with no right to negotiate with Asano, following orders from Jingtian Changchuan.
"President Ito, I was wondering if there’s any chance for our two companies to cooperate and together contribute to the construction of Sapporo City?" Seeing Ito play dumb, Asano had to be more direct, smiling slyly, "Coming all the way from Tokyo and managing to secure this project, your company must be well-funded and powerful. Yet, undertaking construction projects always has its challenges, and having a local like me involved would smooth the process considerably."
The implication was clear: with his local influence, the project would proceed without issues; without him, it would face difficulties.
And there were many potential sources of those difficulties.
"I appreciate your kind offer, President Asano, but this is our company’s first project in Hokkaido, and we would like to complete it on our own. Perhaps we can collaborate on a future opportunity," replied Ito, politely declining.
He was a mid-level manager at East Field Construction Corporation. After the need arose to set up shell companies to take on projects in Hokkaido, they moved many people like him to act as responsible managers, obeying Jingtian Changchuan’s directives.
