"Fine, I can give you the money, but you must assure me that you will leave Tokyo immediately, no! Leave Japan."
The person on the other end of the phone was silent for a moment, then spoke.
"I didn’t need you to tell me that, I’m still young, and not so eager to retire in prison," Takeda Ichiro said indifferently, holding the phone in his right hand while his eyes scanned his surroundings through the windshield, his left hand intermittently feeding bread to his mouth.
"That would be best. The amount of money you want is not small, so I need some time to prepare."
"Three days," Takeda Ichiro stated a number, then added a few more words, "I’ll give you three days. Keep your phone line clear, I’ll call you again in three days."
Once he finished speaking, he hung up directly and continued to leisurely munch on his bread alongside his sparkling water.
He guessed the guy on the other end of the line definitely wouldn’t just hand over the money honestly but would likely use it to lure him out and then kill him to permanently silence him.
But Takeda Ichiro was not the least bit scared, because from the beginning, he didn’t just want the money; he wanted the man’s life, and it would soon be clear who was more cunning.
Meanwhile, Aoyama Xiu Xin had arrived home.
Not seeing his older brother’s car at the entrance, he knew he hadn’t returned yet; he parked and went inside, changing his shoes while his sister-in-law was busy in the kitchen, then called out, "I’m back. Has big brother not arrived yet?"
"Half an hour ago he called saying he’ll be back soon. I’ll start eating now, and when he gets home, he can join us for a steaming hot meal," Aoyama Haruko, with an apron around her waist, answered from the kitchen with a smile.
"Big sister, let me help you," Aoyama Xiu Xin, after tossing his jacket on the sofa and removing his watch, rolled up the sleeves of his white shirt and walked into the kitchen. "Please don’t be polite; just tell me what needs to be done."
"Then please help wash the vegetables," Aoyama Haruko handed him the wet vegetables she was holding, then turned and walked over to the chopping board. "I still have some things to chop, including your favorite tuna."
"Then I’m in for a treat tonight," Aoyama Xiu Xin chuckled, thinking to himself how beautiful his sister-in-law truly was.
Seemingly sensing something, Aoyama Haruko turned around, brushed away some hair from her forehead, and asked with a puzzled look, "Is there something dirty on my back?"
"Ah! No, I just got distracted thinking about work," Aoyama Xiu Xin hastily made up an excuse.
"You really are dedicated to your job, aren’t you, Xiu Xin? But home should be a place for relaxation and enjoyment, so please try not to think about work," Aoyama Haruko chided him.
"Alright!"
Aoyama Xiu Xin chuckled and began earnestly washing the vegetables.
With a man and woman working together, the work wasn’t tiring, and soon, dish after dish, both cold and hot, were prepared and arranged on the modestly sized dining table.
"Ah! Finally finished, Xiu Xin, you worked hard tonight." After placing the last glass, Aoyama Haruko exhaled in relief, her face brimming with happiness and anticipation. "It’s been a while since our whole family sat down to eat together, I’m really happy tonight."
"It’s you who’s worked hard, big sis. I just assisted a bit; you made all of these dishes," Aoyama Xiu Xin said, taking a few paper towels to wipe the sweat from his forehead, and then handed a few to his sister-in-law.
"Thanks, Xiu Xin." Aoyama Haruko smiled and took the towels to wipe her sweat, then turned to glance at the wall clock. "It’s about time Dan should arrive, let me give him a call and ask."
As she finished speaking, she walked over to the phone, kneeled down, and dialed Aoyama Sosuke’s number.
"Dan, uh... Hello! Hello!"
The smile on Aoyama Haruko’s face vanished at a visible speed, and she hung up the phone and just sat there, dazed.
"What’s wrong?" Aoyama Xiu Xin came over to ask.
"It’s... it’s nothing," Aoyama Haruko quickly composed herself, forcing a smile, "Dan has to visit a senior first, he’ll be home later."
Aoyama Xiu Xin frowned slightly, feelings of disgust rising.
His so-called responsible brother really was a go-getter, barely coming home once every few months, and even when he finally did, he was busy sucking up to his superiors first.
Didn’t he know that his wife and younger brother were waiting at home for him? He surely knew; it was just clear that he didn’t really care about his family’s feelings.
"Why don’t you eat first, Xiu Xin? You’ve also had a long day. I’ll warm up the food for him later," Aoyama Haruko noticed Aoyama Xiu Xin’s expression and suggested.
"It’s okay, let’s wait together," Aoyama Xiu Xin’s brow smoothed out, and he smiled casually, sitting down on the sofa, subconsciously taking out a cigarette but then, remembering something, put it away.
Aoyama Haruko caught this small gesture and said with a smile, "Our Xiu Xin really is a considerate and gentle person. But it’s okay; your brother often smokes at home too, I’m already used to the smell, so don’t mind me."
So she thought her husband was too biased against his younger brother. Xiu Xin obviously had many good qualities, yet just because he preferred comfort and wasn’t eager to push himself up the career ladder, he was criticized as completely worthless and intolerable.
"I just didn’t feel like smoking," Aoyama Xiu Xin responded offhandedly and began to drift into his thoughts about Sato’s situation; where had he suddenly gotten so much money from?
Was there anything at the start of the year that could make someone rich overnight?
Moreover, even Sato was able to clear several billion in loans, indicating that this was definitely not a trifling matter.
Suddenly, Aoyama Xiu Xin’s pupils dilated sharply.
Among the many major events at the beginning of the year, the incident that left the deepest impression on him was the robbery at Changxin Bank.
He recalled in detail that the original host had detected Takeda Ichiro’s presence and immediately reported it to his superior, Takahashi Tomoyuki, who then ordered them to stake out nearby and waited for reinforcements.
Right after, Takeda Ichiro and his group suddenly attempted to flee, and when the original host reported again, the person who answered wasn’t Takahashi but Sato, who instructed him to intercept.
What was meant to be a sudden attack turned into an ambush by Takeda Ichiro inside the house, as if he had been forewarned and was waiting for them to fall into the trap.
The robbery had occurred four months ago, and Sato Rich had suddenly paid off several billion in loans in the three months prior.
This coincidence was a bit too timely.
Aoyama Xiu Xin took a deep breath and immediately picked up the handset to call Takahashi Tomoyuki, "This is Aoyama Xiu Xin, Takahashi, I want to ask you, four months ago, after Sato Rich ordered me to carry out a surprise attack to intercept Takeda Ichiro, did he make any other phone calls to someone else?"
At that time, the situation was very urgent. If it was really Sato Rich and Takeda Ichiro conspiring, then the only way he could tip them off was by making a phone call.
Takahashi probably didn’t know anything about it. After all, this wasn’t about corruption or bribery—the fewer people who knew, the greater the risk. Given Sato Rich’s caution and cunning, involving himself alone in this kind of matter was the safest bet.
"What?" Takahashi was momentarily bewildered. He had almost forgotten about the events of four months ago, but since Aoyama Xiu Xin held the leverage, he was forced to rack his brains to recall, finally saying, "Yes, he used my phone to finish giving the orders and then left. I saw him walking out while simultaneously starting to dial on his cell phone. He seemed to be in a hurry to report to his superiors."
"Good, I understand now," Aoyama Xiu Xin hung up the phone and then exhaled fiercely. Although he still didn’t have concrete evidence, he was almost certain the Changxin Bank robbery had been orchestrated by Sato Rich.
Otherwise, all these coincidences were just too coincidental.
This guy was really cunning enough. He had orchestrated the robbery himself, obtained a large sum of money, and afterward shoved the blame of the capture failure onto the original mastermind.
But there was something else Aoyama Xiu Xin couldn’t figure out.
That was why Takeda Ichiro had come back?
And even deliberately exposed his whereabouts to provoke the police.
Regardless of why this guy had come back, the most nervous person right now must be Sato Rich.
No wonder he refused to give the Asakai family face, insisting on wresting control of this case from the Shinjuku Police Station, and even willing to participate as a deputy in the search headquarters.
Regardless, the most urgent task now was to capture Takeda Ichiro first. As long as he was caught, there was a chance to publicly expose Sato Rich’s crimes.
That would not only be a great achievement.
It would also be a way to take revenge on Sato Rich.
And further cleanse the stains upon himself!
"What good thing is Xiu Xin thinking about, as your smile can hardly be restrained?" Aoyama Haruko, who was nearby, took in his expression and couldn’t help but curiously ask.
Regaining his composure, Aoyama Xiu Xin took a deep breath to suppress his excitement, a faint smile hanging on his face, "I thought of something pleasant, but allow me to keep it a secret for now and tell you in a few days, big sister."
"Mysterious, huh? Well, I’m really looking forward to it," Aoyama Haruko blinked.
.........
Time ticked by, second by second.
It was eleven-thirty at night.
The dishes on the table had been reheated twice, but Aoyama Suzumasa still had not returned, and wasn’t answering his phone.
Aoyama Xiu Xin had already grown impatient.
He turned his head toward his sister-in-law, only to find that Aoyama Haruko had fallen asleep on the couch at some unknown time.
In her sleep, her eyebrows were tightly furrowed, and from time to time, she would tightly purse her tender, dewy red lips, clearly having a nightmare.
Aoyama Xiu Xin stepped forward and covered her with a jacket.
"Ding-dong~ Ding-dong~"
Just then, the doorbell suddenly rang.
"It’s the husband back!" Aoyama Haruko opened her eyes, jolting to her feet, and hurried barefoot to the door, where Aoyama Suzumasa and his secretary Ashida Hongta, both red-faced and reeking of alcohol, stood outside.
"Madam." Ashida Hongta supported Aoyama Suzumasa and slightly bowed, softly saying, "The master drank a little too much tonight because he was in a bad mood."
"Hi! Thank you, Ashida-kun," Aoyama Haruko bowed slightly in thanks, then prepared to help Aoyama Suzumasa into the house, but he brushed her off, "I... I can walk myself."
Saying so, he staggered into the house.
"Madam, I should take my leave now." Ashida Hongta bowed deeply, then turned to leave.
Aoyama Haruko bowed in return, "Please take care."
Aoyama Suzumasa staggered over to the couch and sat down with a flop, then looked up and yelled, "Haruko, get me a glass of water. Haruko, did you hear?"
"Hi!" Aoyama Haruko closed the door and hurried to get the water, but Aoyama Xiu Xin had already poured it and forcefully set it in front of Aoyama Suzumasa.
Aoyama Suzumasa tugged at his tie and glanced sideways at Aoyama Xiu Xin, "Hand me the water."
Aoyama Xiu Xin raised his eyebrows.
"I’ll do it, let me do it," Aoyama Haruko sensing trouble, quickly stepped forward and bent over to lift the glass toward Aoyama Suzumasa, "Let me help you..."
"Smack!" Aoyama Suzumasa raised his hand and swept it.
The glass was immediately knocked to the floor.
"Ah!" Aoyama Haruko exclaimed as her chest was soaked, the pink lace inside her dress clearly visible, and her face was also splashed with water.
"Idiot! Did I call you?" Aoyama Suzumasa harshly scolded Aoyama Haruko, then glowered menacingly at Aoyama Xiu Xin, "I haven’t come back in too long, doesn’t the head of this family have a say anymore?"
"So, getting slighted outside and then coming home to vent, is that it? You really are quite a failure, Aoyama Suzumasa," Aoyama Xiu Xin said mockingly.
Obviously, he had tried to ingratiate himself with the leaders and failed, so he came home and vented his frustrations by throwing his weight around as the head of the family. This wasn’t the first time such an event had happened from memory, and the sister-in-law had always taken this lying down.
The original protagonist had always simply played dead and ignored him. The increasingly strained relationship between the brothers was partly due to this manner of challenging the family head’s authority.
But even the original protagonist didn’t put up with him, so Aoyama Xiu Xin, this transmigrant, was even less likely to indulge Aoyama Suzumasa.
