Chapter 127: Chapter 123: Serial Murder Case, Heize Xin Comes Forward
Renping Guoxiong immediately called Asai Youki to apologize, acknowledging that he had failed to raise his son properly. Oro acted out of resentment towards Aoyama Xiu Xin due to the turmoil caused by Erlang and Ling’s marriage.
What could Asai Youki say to that?
Of course, he chose to forgive him.
After all, Renping Guoxiong brought up Asai Ling’s marriage, admitting that the Asakai family had broken their unspoken agreement. Besides, Aoyama Xiu Xin hadn’t suffered any real harm; rather, it was the Renping family that had lost face, with Oro’s years of effort ruined in an instant.
"Serves him right for always scheming behind people’s backs. He never expected Aoyama Xiu Xin to be even worse than him," Asai Ayumi had never liked the scheming Ninpei Oro and now took pleasure in his misfortune.
Asai Zexi, however, had mixed feelings.
He had been hoping that with his sister married into the Renping family, he could bask in Oro’s success and secure a seat in the next House of Representatives election.
But Aoyama Xiu Xin had just taken down Oro; embroiled in such a scandal, resignation and an apology were inevitable—the public would demand no less.
If he didn’t step down, the public’s distaste could spread to the Liberal Democratic Party, which was starting to face scrutiny over Heize Xin’s case, connoting many years of the leading party’s dominance. The internal stability of the party wouldn’t sustain further turmoil, and they would pressure Oro to resign.
Asai Zexi had to admit it.
Aoyama Xiu Xin was somewhat capable.
He wondered internally whether he should consult with him about his future prospects.
"Ayumi, what kind of fiancée talks about her intended that way?" Mrs. Asakai scolded Asai Ayumi.
Asai Ayumi shrank her neck and bowed her head to focus on her food.
Humph, that guy was always up to no good.
Scoundrels had only ever come off worse in his company.
Aoyama Xiu Xin had just arrived at Police Headquarters when he received a call from Renping Guoxiong, summoning him to his office.
"Knock, knock, knock!" He raised his hand and knocked on the door.
"Come in."
Aoyama Xiu Xin pushed open the door, closed it behind him, and quickly stepped forward to bow deeply. "Director General!"
"Mr. Aoyama, there’s no need for such formalities." Renping Guoxiong’s face looked somewhat grave, but his tone was gentle as he stepped out from behind his desk to return Aoyama Xiu Xin’s bow.
Aoyama Xiu Xin was shocked and bowed even lower, "Your Excellency! What are you doing!"
"Mr. Aoyama, I am apologizing on behalf of my son, Oro," Renping Guoxiong straightened up and sighed, "I was unaware of his actions, or else I would have stopped him. I do not blame you for the lesson he has learned; rather, I thank you for shattering his pride and arrogance. After all, it’s better he learns his lesson now, while he still has time to start anew, rather than later on."
"Director General, you might be under a misapprehension. I am also shocked by this morning’s news," Aoyama Xiu Xin maintained his bow as he spoke, knowing Renping Guoxiong wouldn’t believe him, but saying it nonetheless.
"The Asakai family is getting a good son-in-law!" Renping Guoxiong shook his head and continued, "Our families have deep connections; as a son-in-law, you can freely call me uncle. I’ll send Oro abroad to study for some time and make sure he is better behaved from now on. I hope this incident won’t sour the relationship between the Renping and Asakai families."
Aoyama Xiu Xin could feel the sincerity in every word, but he only trusted about half of what this slick old operator said and didn’t let his guard down.
"Hey! Rest assured, Director General, I completely understand," Aoyama Xiu Xin said with utmost respect.
"That’s good, that’s very good!" Renping Guoxiong repeated, seemingly moved, and then turned to pick up a file folder from his desk and handed it to Aoyama Xiu Xin, "Apart from apologizing, there’s another matter. Please take a look at this, Police Chief Aoyama."
Aoyama Xiu Xin took the file folder with both hands and looked inside.
It was a file on a series of serial killings; a two-year-old case with five victims, three men and two women, who were murdered one after another within a year. Based on the methods and traces left at the scenes, it seemed that the same three people committed all five murders, leading the police to believe they were dealing with a single group of killers who, however, had never been caught.
"This case caused quite a stir two years ago, and the police thought they’d continue committing crimes, but after the last victim was killed, the murderer went silent, and the case files were shelved. But I haven’t forgotten about it. I know what you’re capable of, so I hope you can take another look."
"It’s okay even if nothing comes of it. Don’t need to focus solely on this case; check it when you can. After all, the killers are still at large, and who knows when they might strike again; if you could bring them to justice, it would be ideal."
Renping Guoxiong said, looking at Aoyama Xiu Xin.
"Hey! I will do my best." This was an assignment from a high-ranking official; how could he possibly decline?
"Excellent! I knew Xiu Xin was someone willing to take on responsibility," Renping Guoxiong said, smiling and patting his shoulder, "You may go back to work now. Later, someone will bring all the relevant files to your office; there are quite a lot of them."
"Hey! I shall take my leave!" Aoyama Xiu Xin bowed respectfully again and then turned to leave.
"Oh, and one more thing." Renping Guoxiong called out to him.
Aoyama Xiu Xin turned back, a questioning look on his face.
Renping Guoxiong smiled, "We’re planning to give you some positive coverage at the Police Headquarters, just as we did with Ayumi before. After all, you are capable and have a good image. It would also put to rest any speculation that I may retaliate against you because of my son’s issues. You’ll need to cooperate with that."
"Hey! I appreciate your concern, Director General!" Aoyama Xiu Xin said, visibly grateful, recognizing this as a good thing for himself.
Renping Guoxiong waved him off with a hand gesture.
Aoyama Xiu Xin bowed once more and departed.
Renping Guoxiong watched his retreating figure silently.
Aoyama Xiu Xin returned to his office only to find Asai Ayumi there. He asked, "What brings you here?"
"I came to check on my subordinates’ work. Is there a problem?" Asai Ayumi defiantly retorted.
Aoyama Xiu Xin nodded, "Fine, fine."
"What did the director want you to do?" This was Asai Ayumi’s real purpose, as she distrusted Aoyama Xiu Xin.
"You think he would take revenge on me for his son’s sake?" Aoyama Xiu Xin asked, then handed her a file bag, "He just gave me a new case."
"Ah! This case!" Asai Ayumi’s expression changed as soon as she opened it and said, "This case is not easy to investigate. I heard from my father that even the Police Headquarters had set up a special task force at the time, but they still couldn’t crack it."
"It’s not like they’re forcing me to solve the case, just asked me to take a look." Aoyama Xiu Xin explained.
Asai Ayumi’s face softened a bit, "Well, that’s a relief."
Suddenly, she noticed a red mark on Aoyama Xiu Xin’s neck and her expression immediately turned bleak.
"It’s a mosquito bite." Aoyama Xiu Xin subconsciously touched his neck and calmly defended.
"Heh." Asai Ayumi grinned sarcastically, saying in a mocking tone, "Must’ve been a female mosquito, how disgusting."
After saying that, she stormed out.
She always knew Aoyama Xiu Xin was a philanderer, but for some reason, perhaps because she was now his fiancée, she felt increasingly angered by it.
"Come with me to a place after work." Aoyama Xiu Xin caught the flying file bag and called out to her retreating figure, with a cold voice.
Asai Ayumi gave him the middle finger without turning around, a gesture she particularly enjoyed making at Aoyama Xiu Xin lately.
It was a perfect expression of her disdain for him.
At noon, someone moved a stack of files for the serial murder case into Aoyama Xiu Xin’s office – a tall pile.
Aoyama Xiu Xin felt a headache just looking at it.
So he didn’t read a single one.
After work, he called Asai Ayumi to leave with him.
"Where are we going?" Asai Ayumi asked.
Aoyama Xiu Xin opened the car door for her, "You’ll see in a moment, why the rush?"
"All so secretive." Asai Ayumi pursed her lips as she got into the car and then buckled up. She took off her coat, leaving her in her shirt, the seatbelt accentuating her generous "grain silos," making them appear even fuller and rounder.
Aoyama Xiu Xin drove to the Harbor District, arriving at the villa Inakawa Hong had gifted him, he stopped at the entrance and said to Asai Ayumi, "Our wedding house, how do you like it?"
"Where did you get the money to buy this?" Although she hadn’t stepped out, the height and length of the garden wall told Asai Ayumi that the villa in front of her was large and expensive.
Aoyama Xiu Xin touched the kiss mark left by the sisters of Zhongshan on his neck, "I earned it by selling my body."
"Then sell it a few more times. I want to change cars," Asai Ayumi rolled her eyes, got out of the car, and called out to him, "Give me the keys."
Aoyama Xiu Xin got out and tossed the keys to her.
As Asai Ayumi opened the gate, what came into view was a courtyard full of maple trees, a wave of green rustling in the breeze, accompanied by the rustling of leaves.
A stone path ran from the entrance right up to the main villa, and beyond the house was a backyard with several cherry blossom trees and a spacious swimming pool.
After touring the yard, the two started to explore the inside of the villa, which featured pure Japanese architectural and interior design.
There was a balcony on the third floor, standing on which one could perfectly overlook the entire canal. At sunset, the orange sky reflected off the shimmering surface of the water, with boats coming and going, creating a picturesque scene. Asai Ayumi leaned on the balcony railing, intoxicated by the view.
.........
The next morning, a black Mercedes quietly waited outside the Tokyo District Court.
It was there to pick up the recently bailed Heize Xin.
The presence of only one car didn’t mean Heize Xin had fallen on hard times; after all, he may have lost his power, but the money he had accumulated was still intact.
He just needed to keep a low profile for now.
If he were to organize a luxurious motorcade to pick him up, those damn reporters would start writing nonsense.
Just after nine in the morning, an aged Heize Xin, looking ten years older and supported by his lawyer, slowly walked toward the exit of the local prosecution. The closer he got to the door, the more color returned to his face, and his spirit seemed to be reviving.
His body was quite old, and coupled with underlying health issues, he wasn’t in good shape.
But what was currently sustaining him was hatred.
Hatred for that ant, Aoyama Xiu Xin!
Aoyama Xiu Xin, I’m out.
