Chapter 72: Sunset Glow
Instead, Cassius had pulled the boots to his knees and pushed the drawstrings inside the loops of the boots, then with ease, he had tied the end into a ribbon before tossing it aside to her as if it was some easy task, "Behave. If you’re too noisy, I will throw you out."
She pursed her lips at once but then frowned. Why was she being obedient to this man for his silent treatment? No! He didn’t deserve this patience of hers.
"Are you upset?" she asked, and he didn’t respond. "You’re like a child. When you’re upset, you stop talking. What did I do wrong? By thinking there’s something good in you?"
He turned his eyes at her frowning and then narrowing his eyes dangerously, "Silence, birdie. You know in whose hands your life is." He wasn’t playing around. If earlier was cold, this one was threatening. He seemed to be in an apparent bad mood, and if she poked around and found out, she’d pay the price.
That was a definite sign for her to silence her mouth, but hearing that didn’t ease the build of frustration she had felt from her annoying boots and then to his silent treatment. As she was going to kick a fuss by kicking her feet down the floor, she had unknowingly flung her legs too high and Cassius who had tied the strings on her boots didn’t expect her ankle to be so small either, causing for the shoes to shoot upward on the ceiling and slam down on his legs.
Now..
Cassius’s jaw clenched, he had said no words before glaring at her. Anger swirled in his red eyes, ready to bite like a snake, and seeing this, she hurriedly took her boots off his legs, ignoring the glare out of fear and then merging into one as the walls of the carriage. How lovely it would be if she could even become one with the walls just for this ride...
Seeing her quietness, Cassius finally let out a sigh on his chest. The quiet of the carriage lingers as the windows are tinted orange from the sunset. The clear view of the blue sky against the orange gradient from the horizon made the quietness of the carriage a little less stifling. Arabella wouldn’t tell anyone, but she thought that under that orangish red sky, Cassius didn’t look so bad. He didn’t look mean. He didn’t look bad. He was simply good to admire, like a fine piece of art. But this was something she would never admit, not even in the face of death. She closed her eyes as the ray of sunshine was simply too bright for her.
Cassius then saw her who had fallen asleep and reached out his hand. He lifted a single hair covering her eyes, pushing it back behind her ears. Her reddish brown eyes against the warmth of the sky made him wonder whether she would soon betray him too. After all, she wasn’t here by choice. It’d be foolish to trust her. But the sky made him somewhere thought that she wouldn’t even though he always believe in facts and evidence, and said evidence against her wouldn’t betray him hadn’t surfaced, he shouldn’t believe in her.
But he could tell she wouldn’t. She didn’t even sell her humanity to survive in the castle. He closed his eyes and wondered whether her father could still be found as he was particularly petty, especially to old debts that hadn’t been paid in full.
When they arrived back in the castle, Arabella noticed Nora the maid with the rest and seeing her unhappiness crossed their eyes. They didn’t dare to show it in front of Cassius, however, knowing he wouldn’t let it happen, which was odd. He’s mean, so they should have done it in front of him. who knows, maybe he would even agree to it. Or maybe not as last time in front of the noble ladies he had somehow deflected the mockery with a more biting sarcasm.
Whatever, she was thinking too much about this man. She decided to return to his room, find her happy corner and sleep, close her eyes and wake up fresh as she hadn’t slept much last night with all the situation. As she walked by the maid, Nora chuckled, whispering to the other maid, "I thought she was brought out off the castle to be sold."
Arabella pretended she didn’t hear anything and walked off, hurrying inside the castle, while Cassius, who heard Nora’s words, frowned. But why should he answer? To confirm that the birdie was far too important to him as she had claimed?
He turned away from the place, but when he reached the castle’s magnificent entrance, he looked at the quiet maid who had followed him around since decades ago and ordered her, "Bring those maids out of my eyes."
The maid, Karnala, turned to look at the maids, and seeing so many of them, she questioned, "May you tell me which, Your Highness?"
"All. Especially that one with a voice so grating to my ears." And with that, he left the scene, while Nora was later told that she was dismissed from taking care of Cassius’s bedchamber, which had always been her proudest job in the entire castle.
Inside the servant’s quarters, Nora, who had just received the news, had received it badly. Her arms crossed in front of her, and she demanded for a reason, "But why? Hadn’t I done my job spotlessly? The Crown Prince had never come with a complaint-"
Karnala raised her hand, stopping Nora from her endless ramble. She looked at her bleakly on the eyes; her raven hair caused her red eyes to look bloodier than ever. Her pale lips opened, and it came with a shutting tone, "A dismissal isn’t a request, it’s an order. No questions asked, no answers demanded; that is the rule for us, the Castle’s servants."
Nora clenched her fists tight as she bit down the insides of her cheeks. Unable to make Karnala sway to her way as the woman was always oddly strict with rules and after considering how Karnala is Cassius’s servant and she didn’t want to be on her bad side, she couldn’t say anything and proceeded to storm out off the quarters. She hatefully shoves anyone in her way without knowing the woman who had been shoved by her had fallen.
The girl, wearing the pet clothing, was startled, and when she saw how Nora ignored her mistake and continued walking, anger bubbled, and she jumped back to her feet, grabbing tight to Nora’s shoulders. Stopping on her heels, Nora was stunned in the place for a moment. she turned and saw the human hand holding her shoulders. Another fucking human pet. She couldn’t hold back the annoyance in her, especially to this pet who wasn’t even as protected by a royalty as Arabella. Unknowingly, the girl had become the perfect person for her to vent out all her pent up anger, and she didn’t hesitate as she held back the girl’s hands before twisting it around. Yet, despite this, the girl who cried glared at her.
Angrily, Nora glared back at her, "What do you think you are doing, you whore?!"
