To His Hell and Back
Chapter 70: Not Right, Not Wrong

Chapter 70: Not Right, Not Wrong

Cassius taps his finger on his elbow. Now, eyeing them, it was obvious to her that he was wondering what was the best way to kill the humans, to teach them a lesson. That thought made her gulp, but seeing that almost all of these people could collude to kill without a hint of guilt made her wonder if the evil here wasn’t the man standing beside her but the group of people in front of her.

"Last night," she spoke up, looking at the humans who were all too fearful to speak, yet their faces seemed regretful. Not because they felt guilty but because they couldn’t kill Cassius fast enough. She frowned, not wanting to see their heartless eyes, but despite all that, she still had to ask the question, "Last night I was attacked, weren’t it you people?"

It would make sense. After all, the people in this town are all cowards. Cowardly because they could be at ease with hurting vampires, but they never wanted to lift their fingers as if such action was far too sinful. Then what about sending those vampires to their deaths?

She knew vampires were monsters. They are creatures of the night who are often ruthless and insatiable. But even monsters had families. Even monsters, she had begun to realize, were capable of love.

The ones she had encountered in the palace were nothing but bloodthirsty, power hungry, and endlessly scheming. Yet there were others outside those gilded walls, beyond the court’s cruelty. Vampires who had once lived, loved, and lost, just as humans did.

The tradition of slave pets had not begun with the vampires but with the human king before them as a lesson. A cruel, calculated method to remind vampires of their place, to show that even though vampires are always stronger than humans, they are nothing beneath them. And yet, the vampires had not abolished the tradition of slavery. They had embraced it. Perfected it.

Because love, even in its purest form, could curdle into something twisted when mixed with pain. Because history, once stained with blood, had a way of repeating itself.

She swallowed hard, her gaze sweeping over the trembling townspeople. Without their knowing, they had started another cycle of hatred deep enough to continue again and again. The vampires had already become alerted about humans, and if they knew about this, those vampires wouldn’t hesitate before telling the entire Kingdom that humans would soon lose all their rights.

"Don’t you think that vampires have something to blame here as well?"

The voice that spoke was sharp, feminine, and laced with fury. Unsurprisingly, it came from Agnes.

Arabella turned toward her, noting the way her features twisted in anger. It was one thing to glare at Cassius; to defy him was already commendable in itself, but to raise her voice against him, to meet his gaze without flinching, was sheer audacity.

Agnes’s voice rose to a yell, her rage spilling over like a dam finally broken.

"Vampires— you’re all the same! Nothing more than monsters desperate for our flesh and blood! Tell me, where in this cursed world is there a vampire who wouldn’t sink their fangs into us the moment they got the chance? Who wouldn’t drain us dry and leave our corpses rotting in the streets?" Her breath hitched, and she took a step forward, trembling with fury. "Do you have any idea how many humans have died because of your kind? How many families were torn apart? And yet, when we fight back, when we try to protect ourselves, it’s suddenly a crime? Suddenly, we’re the ones who deserve to die?"

Her chest heaved, her eyes blazing as she glared at Cassius. "You send us to the gallows for the same bloodshed you commit! And you dare call that justice?"

"The laws have also spoken that vampires who kill humans unjustly will be sent to be defanged and in a worse consequence killed," Cassius remarked. "If you are proven to have killed in a self defense, they wouldn’t sentence you to death."

"Lies! You liar! My husband- he was killed-" she let out a hiccup, "By your people because he protected me from that hungry vampire-"

Cassius sighed as he ruffled his hair. He had heard a lot of vampires who would pay the authorities simply so they could get away from their sins. In fact, not only vampires would do this but also humans. It’s a common practice of corruption to silence and act this way for the sake of money. He could already tell that the vampire in question must have paid for Agnes’s husband’s death, which made the vampire all the more guilty, but he had to remind the woman of one thing she had forgotten.

"The margrave who takes care of these cases is a human, a woman," he pointed. "True, that vampire should receive his death punishment; a shame he’s already dead, but be in no worry his family would follow. But your hatred isn’t so fair, is it? As much as the vampires were the cause for this, your own people would send your husband to be killed."

Bella’s green eyes widened, and when she looked at Agnes, it seemed that the truth she had refused to look finally rang in her head again. Her face turned dark from despair as tears drenched her entire face. She refused to acknowledge that it wasn’t only vampires who had killed her dearest husband.

It wasn’t only the blood sucking creatures but... her own people.

The heartbreak dawned on her as if she had been slapped across the cheek, and seeing that made Bella to frown.

"Let us also not forget the fact that you have also killed humans or tried to harm one." his eyes glanced at her until it left.

Before she could speak to him, Cassius had turned from the spot, turning away from the rest of the town people. He spoke loud enough for Renard to hear the sentence he made, "Send them all to the dungeon. Investigate all the bodies in the well. We’re going back to the castle now."
