Chapter 61: Guide Book Of Caring A Human
Cassius had jumped down from the top of the well, descending downward in a hurry without caring if there was a way to go back up. She saw him as he put himself with the dirty well, his hands then shooting forward to hold her face.
In a sobbing mess, it was hard to see everything clearly but she could see Cassius’s face which was only a breadth away from hers. How his red eyes seemed filled with worries, rage, and there was the look of hesitation that brimmed on his entire soul. His eyebrows were furrowed tight, even his signature smile was no where to be found.
Shouldn’t he be happy that she look this upset and in harm?
Wasn’t this what he wanted to see?
Yet his expression betrays everything.
She couldn’t stop the tears that drenched her face. He placed his hand on her cheeks so gently and that tender touch seemed to have caused more tears to fall from her eyes.
"Are you alright?" His voice slipped the tinge of emotion. But Cassius doesn’t have emotions. "I took my time, it’s my fault."
Was he apologizing?
"I’m sorry," when those two words came from his mouth, hiccups escaped from her lips.
She was stunned.
"A-Are you apologizing?"
Cassius eyed her back, his gaze seemed to find her words rubbing him the wrong way. She thought he’d return back to his normal self only to hear him, "I am. Happy?" He raised one eyebrow but his tone was too gentle for it to be true that she almost try to hit herself when he held her hands and pulled it forward, "Where else does it hurt?"
She shook her head only to wince from a sharp pain that she didn’t feel all this time, "My head."
Swiftly, his fingers then moved to lift her hair, pushing it backward to look at the wound. He was grateful that it was just a scratch. "We should leave here now. I didn’t know you are weak to darkness."
No one else knew, she doubted even Ariel knew about it. She had hide it too well as weakness wasn’t something she could be proud of. Now she was laid bare in front of him but it seemed he had also laid himself bare to her now.
"Why are y-you being kind?" When she speaks her words, her tears came back flowing. His hands were busy wiping it away, as if he couldn’t let the tears to flow anymore. It made her more emotional, like a child.
"Should I be mean?" He asked, he was joking but when she frowned he seemed to have broken into a smile, finally looking more at ease and more like his usual self. "What else had happened?"
"Someone hit my head," she said, still with a hiccup, "T- Then I woke up here. There are b-bones..." as she said so, her eyes looked down and shivers ran down her spine to see the gory scene in a brighter view.
Cassius crushed the bones underneath his feet and suddenly his hand was on her waist, "Talk later, hold on."
She didn’t know what he meant by hold on. Her hands wreathed around his shoulders and in a swift motion, he whisked her up, pulling her knees to one of his arm and his other around her shoulders. The tight grip told her that she was now safe. That she wouldn’t be in darkness anymore.
He then crouched briefly and jumped up. Like a wild beast, one jump from his legs had launched him to the top of the well and as he reached up, his steady posture had made sure that the girl around his arms wouldn’t fall out in an impact.
Throughout this, Arabella found herself staring at his face. The flawlessness of his skin and the sharpness of his crafted features didn’t feel fake. This was really Cassius. A kind Cassius. Another layer of Cassius.
He loved to torment her, love to see her in trouble, but he didn’t like her in harm.
How odd. Couldn’t he make up his mind? To treat her preciously or to treat her like a toy he could discard at anytime.
That’s what he should do. That would have made her feel better.
It wouldn’t have made her feel torn like now.
Torn to believe he’s good, torn to believe that he cares, torn to believe- that he’s an ally. That he could love.
They reached to the inn in a blink, startling Renard who was outside the door, pacing back and forth with a look of a frown. Immediately upon seeing his master, the blue haired vampire rushed, "Your Highness- I have found the bodies and kept them in place, however, there was-"
"Later," he cut Renard’s words, rushing toward the inn. She saw how Renard looked at her as her head was position on Cassius’s shoulders, looking at his back and seeing that his subordinate seemed to look shocked.
See, even that vampire was shocked. They all knew this wasn’t normal of him.
Renard however didn’t stop there and rush. He was devoted to help Cassius and knowing that he had carried the girl on his arms so securely, Cassius meant to save the girl.
"Should I call a doctor, Your Highness?"
"No," Cassius answered as he kicked the door to his room. "I have learned enough. The doctors from the humans and vampires aren’t capable enough."
"You studied medicine?" Renard asked, gagged, baffled. His red eyes slowly moved to Arabella and when they made an eye contact the two seemed to find a sense of comradery as they were both confused at each words and action Cassius had shown.
"Why?" Cassius’s bluntly asked.
"For the human?"
"For her," he confirmed, placing Arabella down in a jiffy to the fluffy bed. She looked at him, his words ringing like a bell.
He stared at her who was wet from the top to bottom and realizing how bad she was covered in mud and dirt, she thought she was dirtying the bed and wanted to go down but his hand firmly pushed her in place.
"Take a bath first, infection could happen if the wound isn’t washed clean," before she could process what he meant, he turned to Renard and demanded like usual, "Draw a warm bath, then go and take the medicine box."
Renard cocked his head to the side, "Why are you rolling your shirt, Your Highness?"
Arabella also stared at him and tilted her head to the opposite side, "Are you taking a bath too?"
Cassius stared at the two, now he frowned as they two seemed to act the same way.
"I’ll bathe you," he then announced.
