To His Hell and Back -
Chapter 53: Hungry Creatures-I
Chapter 53: Hungry Creatures-I
The dark liquid slithered and coiled like a living thing, writhing as it expanded across the wooden floor of the dimly lit inn. A thick, unnatural silence followed as if the very air had been stolen from the room. Then, with a slow, deliberate motion, the black mass began to rise.
It twisted and stretched, shaping itself into the vague outline of a man. First, long limbs formed, shadowy and distorted, before they sharpened, solidifying into flesh. Fingers curled, elegant yet deadly, as the darkness sculpted itself into broad shoulders and a tall, imposing frame.
Scarlet eyes flared open, glowing like embers in the void.
The last remnants of the liquid dripped from his coat, melting into nothing as the transformation completed. Cassius stood there, his presence suffocating, the lingering traces of his power humming in the air.
Sweeping his gaze across the room, he tried to find the one person whom he had come here for, searching until it locked onto the empty space where she should have been. After finding that her presence was nowhere around him which had caused his eyebrows to knit tightly together.
His jaw tightened.
"She’s not here."
Snapping out of the room, he pushed the door open to find the inn keeper who was walking up the staircase, to flinch in surprise upon seeing him there. She quickly moved backward as she saw him suddenly appearing from inside the room when she had been certain that she hadn’t seen Cassius walking inside earlier.
"H-How did you enter..."
"Where is she?" He demanded, his sharp red gaze locking on Agnes was already inhuman, but when the round pupil inside his crimson eyes turned oval and then it became into a star, the woman shuddered until her back had hit the wall.
"I-Is it the girl who came with you?"
"You know which," he said, his tone deadly, "Speak where is she now."
"D-Down," Agnes stammered, pointing her hand downward, "She was down... she just came back from walking. She was drenched so I lent her a new dress-" before her explanation had finished, Cassius had pushed her aside, walking downward to take from the corner of his eyes the sight of Arabella who was holding to a wooden cup tightly around her hands, her green eyes seemed to be filled with fear.
When he looked at him, her face was relieved, though it tried its best not to show it.
Cassius, who had reached the table, frowned, "Did you cut yourself?"
Bella was surprised, looking at him with hesitation when he suddenly took her by her face and pushed her hair from her forehead, finding the cut on her forehead.
Seeing this, she slowly pushed him away, unhappy by his action, "I was walking to the wall when suddenly someone knocked my head."
"Who?" His words came threatening, which made her to shudder.
"Why are you worried?" she sighed, brushing him away from her face with a dismissive flick of her hand. "It’s nothing. I didn’t know who it was at first, and I thought it might be someone dangerous. But when I chased after the person who hit me, they vanished into thin air."
Her tone tried to convey nonchalance, but the tremor in her voice betrayed her. The lingering fear still clung to her like a shadow, and deep down, she couldn’t shake the unsettling feeling that something far more sinister lurked just beyond her sight.
Agnes, who heard this, clenched her hands together. "Maybe it’s him."
"Him?" Cassius raised his eyebrows, releasing his hand from Bella. When he had lifted his hand to his nose, he confirmed that the blood was indeed the familiar one which belong only to his birdie.
"There was a loose vampire who had come to the town. I heard Mayor Pascal had let him in because he seemed in need of help, but then he disappeared one night, and since then, all the vultures had been killed, and their bodies were all dried from their blood."
Arabella clenched her arms together. "I didn’t look at the person’s face properly, but I think it was a man."
"Wow, my birdie can now look at the darkness?" Cassius teased, smiling, "Did you really think that you saw someone, or was it a gut feeling?"
Looking back at him, her green eyes slightly shadowed by her brownish red lashes as she crinkled the corners of her eyes, "I saw them. Don’t you believe me?"
Cassius doesn’t respond.
He then chuckled, "I do believe my pet’s words more than anyone else."
Hearing that, Arabella rolled her green eyes, brushing his words aside. She then sat down and continued to take a sip of her warm drink when she saw Cassius, who had made his way toward the door, and asked, "Where are you going? It’s late."
"I never sleep, remember?" Cassius inquired, and she shrugged her shoulders.
"Are you going to search for the person who had hit me?" She guessed while standing up from the place, padding on the floor with the same boots he had given her. "Master, have you decided to be nice to your pet tonight and beat the person who had attacked me first?"
"Yes." Cassius reached out his hand and pushed her brownish red hair behind her ears, "I promised, didn’t I? That I will make sure anyone who had hit my precious birdie to die a horrible death." He smiled though his words sounds sweet, it wasn’t throughly said with a sense of responsibility but rather confidence.
Arabella clenched her fists. Although she tried to sound brave and had made it seem as if it wasn’t a big deal, her hands were trembling, and it was clear that she was simply trying to distract herself from the fact that she was still scared after being attacked by someone unknown. It’s clear how scared she was, considering she had followed him willingly when usually she would have just stayed back in the room.
"I’ll come with you," she offered. When she looked down, her face finally showed the fear she had been trying to hide from earlier.
"What floats your boat, birdie," and he turned toward the door, pushing it open, followed by Bella. Agnes, who was left alone, simply watched them, her eyes like a hawk as she saw them from the window until their shadows retreated to the unknown.
