Chapter 340: Chapter 121: Conflict_2

Yueyao didn’t mind; life on the mountain was just like this, all the food was very plain. However, after a few days, Yueying could not stand it anymore. Even though they were vegetarians at the Lian Mansion, it wasn’t just vegetables and radishes every day. She ate so much that her face started to look pallid. Yet for this matter, she couldn’t even lash out at Yueyao, because none of this had anything to do with Yueyao.

These days were nothing but terrible for Cai Qing. Not to mention having to wash rice, cook, pick vegetables, light fires, and clean the courtyard, she also had to wash clothes. Just one day in, and her once fair hands had already changed color.

Cai Lan was already full of resentment. After Hua Lei asked her to help empty the chamber pots, she finally erupted, shouting, “Even the chamber pots I have to empty? Don’t you have hands and feet? It’s always me and Cai Qing doing everything. What do you do?” Cai Lan conveniently ignored the fact that Hua Lei and Qiao Lan were chopping firewood.

Qiao Lan pinched Hua Lei, “We’ll empty the chamber pots ourselves.” That damn woman really knew how to fuel the fire, yet Hua Lei seemed perfectly happy with instigating.

Qiao Lan pulled Hua Lei outside and said, “Don’t you feel uncomfortable if you don’t stir up trouble for the Miss?” Hua Lei, although sharp-tongued at the Lian Mansion, knew her limits, but on this mountain, she had none.

Hua Lei said discontentedly, “I just can’t stand her acting like a delicate Miss.”

Qiao Lan said sternly, “If someone needs to be disciplined, let the Eldest Miss handle it. Is it your place to do so, Hua Lei? The Miss values you, which means you should not cause her any trouble.” Qiao Lan found that Hua Lei was relatively well-behaved in the Lian Mansion, but up in the mountains, she just couldn’t contain herself.

Having spent so much time together, Hua Lei knew Qiao Lan cared for her. She seemed less restrained these last few days than she was in the mansion.

It took Yueying three days to copy just two scriptures. It wasn’t that Yueying was lazy, but she wrote slowly and was not focused; moreover, copying the scriptures posed another great risk: her hands developed blood blisters which hurt at the slightest touch.

In the afternoon, while Cai Lan was sweeping fallen leaves in the courtyard, she heard recitations from inside the house. Cai Lan took a deep breath to calm herself. These three days had truly felt like an eternity for Cai Lan. Actually, the chores Cai Lan did weren’t too tough–washing rice, cooking rice, picking vegetables were all light tasks; even the clothes she washed were their own. Hua Lei was just making things difficult for Cai Lan on purpose by demanding her to empty the chamber pot; all these chores were shared with Cai Qing. But such trivial matters were real hell for Cai Lan, who was used to comfort and pleasure. Every day looking at her hands made her want to cry, fearing they would be ruined. After meticulously caring for them for over ten years, how could she accept them being destroyed here?

Cai Lan wanted to go back, desperately. Here, every day was filled with endless chores; she also had to listen to the Third Young Lady reciting scriptures. If this continued, she felt she might go insane.

Cai Lan had learned to be smart; she dared not badmouth Yueyao in front of Yueying anymore, because it was useless– the Miss wouldn’t listen. Cai Lan knew that complaining about her hardship wouldn’t make the Miss help her; she had to be strategic.

Seeing Yueying still hunched over the desk, Cai Lan approached and said, “Miss, you can’t keep copying anymore. If you continue, your hands will scar. Miss, Nanny Wang once said that a girl’s hands are very precious. If calluses form, people from the Yao Family might think you are neglected and made to do heavy chores every day at home.”

Yueying was actually worried herself, but she had been enduring it these last two days. Hearing Cai Lan’s words, she finally put down her pen and went to Yueyao’s room.

At that moment, Yueyao was also copying scriptures.

Yueying, looking at the piles of papers beside her, asked in utter amazement, “Sister, did you copy all these?” It couldn’t be; the amount of paper on the ground was several times what she had.

Yueyao nodded without making a fuss, “Mhm, I’ve finished copying four books, and I’m about to finish the fifth one soon. Sister, how much have you copied?”

Yueying asked incredulously, “Sister, you’re almost done with just one book left? Third younger sister, these are not ordinary texts; they must be free of any mistakes, and you cannot be careless.” Yueying was convinced that Yueyao was just skimming through the task.

This statement irritated not just Hua Lei, but also Qiao Lan: “Eldest Miss, our Miss is nothing but devout.”

Yueying was too astonished, thus her words hadn’t gone through her brain first.

Yueyao said indifferently, “If big sister doesn’t believe it, she can check for herself to see if I have been negligent.” Her copied scriptures were so flawless that even the most critical nuns in the Nunnery had nothing to criticize.
