Chapter 31: Chapter 30: Smart Spider

Alexander looked up at the towering beast and could not help but shudder at its appearance.

Who wouldn’t? Just from the sheer pressure it emitted, he knew that even he would have a hard time dealing with it.

Moreover, he was not yet truly experienced. Taking out his sword as it appeared in his hand, he steadied himself.

The moment the spider saw the human raise his sword, it lunged forward. Its massive legs dug into the earth as it opened its jaws wide.

A sickly purple glow built up within its maw, and with a sharp hiss, it spat or rather, shot its venom at high speed.

The projectile flew straight toward Alexander. Prepared for the attack, he simply narrowed his eyes as he observed the burning, liquid-like substance hurtling through the air.

Splash!

The attack tore through the air, sizzling as it corroded the ground upon impact. Toxic fumes rose from the affected area. But Alexander was nowhere to be seen.

He had already retreated, watching as the ground decomposed under the effects of the strong acidic poison.

"That powerful?" His expression turned grim.

Seeing this, the spider launched another attack. With a swift sidestep, his body blurred, evading the strike by mere inches.

The venom splattered against a tree behind him, melting through the bark and wood in an instant. Cracking sounds echoed as the tree bent and collapsed.

The spider did not relent. It reared back, its many eyes glinting before another shot of venom was launched at him like a deadly projectile.

Alexander considered parrying the attack, but he knew that if he did, his sword would melt under the spider’s corrosive venom.

Whoosh!

He twisted his body, narrowly avoiding the venom as it sailed past his shoulder. He could feel the heat of its corrosive properties just from the lingering mist it left behind.

With each attack, his movements remained fluid, dodging the incoming venom streams with precision.

Left, right, and a backflip every motion was both calculated and instinctive.

Fwoosh!

Another shot of venom came, but as Alexander’s figure vanished like a mirage, it struck a rock instead, corroding it in an instant.

It left behind a gaping hole, sizzling with acid.

"Is spitting acid the only thing you can do?" Alexander roared as he rushed toward the spider.

The spider narrowed its eyes as it watched its prey rush forward. It had expected the human to show fear, hesitation, or even retreat.

But he did not.

Caught off guard by Alexander’s sudden charge, the spider tensed. A burst of air pressure followed in his wake as he sprinted forward, kicking up dirt while closing the distance.

His sword gleamed under the moonlight, poised for a devastating strike. Yet, just as Alexander entered striking range, the spider reacted.

With its heightened senses, it moved with unnatural speed.

Fwip!

A sharp whipping sound filled the air as the spider flicked its leg, retreating swiftly while shooting out a sticky, gleaming white thread straight at him.

Seeing the white thread approaching, Alexander jumped, pushing himself off the ground in an instant.

Flipping midair, he narrowly avoided the web as it shot past his feet, embedding itself into the dirt. Moments later, it hardened like steel, resembling unbreakable strands of nylon fishing line.

"So it’s not just the venom I need to watch out for, but its webs as well," Alexander muttered, still airborne, his expression serious as he glanced below.

The spider gave him no time to think. It spat another shot of venom this time, even faster.

Whoosh!

Alexander twisted in midair, narrowly evading the attack. As he landed, he immediately rolled forward, using his momentum to maintain his speed.

The moment his feet touched the ground, he pushed off again, rapidly closing the distance. His grip on the hilt of his sword tightened.

"Take this, you eight-legged creature!" Alexander said coldly.

The spider hurled more venom and webs, but Alexander did not slow down. He maneuvered his footing with precision, dodging each attack while maintaining his speed.

This time, as he closed the gap, he struck. Just below the spider’s head, he locked eyes with the monstrous creature with thousands eyeballs staring right back at him.

He swung his blade upward, aiming to injure the spider’s neck and jaw, but the creature leapt sideways with surprising agility. Alexander’s eyes widened as he glanced to the side.

"Such speed and agility for its size," he praised inwardly.

His sword sliced through empty air, the force of his strike creating a thin crescent of wind that dissipated into the night.

The spider landed a few feet away, now fully aware of the human’s capabilities.

The pressure it sensed could only mean that his bloodline was strong, though its wielder had yet to reach full maturity.

If it could devour this human and absorb his bloodline, it would greatly aid its evolution, raising its rank as a beast.

However, it chose not to rush in recklessly. It was not a mindless creature driven solely by instinct. it would observe and wait for the right moment.

Alexander gritted his teeth as he adjusted his stance. He knew exactly what the spider was doing. It was not attacking recklessly but instead playing defensively, carefully gauging his capabilities.

He smiled. If he used his strongest skill, this spider would have no chance since it would fall by his blade.

So far, they seemed evenly matched, but that would change in an instant.

"Try dodging this," he muttered.

Taking a deep breath, he channeled mana from his core, guiding it through his body and into his sword.

"Crescent Blade Arc!"

[-30 Mana]

[Mana: 173/203]

A blazing arc of energy erupted from his weapon, streaking toward the spider like a crescent moon cutting through the night sky.

It flew with an elegant, almost mesmerizing motion. The spider, sensing danger from the attack, instinctively bent its legs and leapt straight up, avoiding it with ease.

Instead of striking its intended target, the Crescent Blade Arc carved through the ground, sending dirt and debris flying in all directions.

The attack was fast, but the spider’s speed was even greater. Unless it was cornered, landing a clean hit seemed nearly impossible.

Expecting this outcome, Alexander was not disappointed that the spider had dodged his attack again.

The spider, relying on its long-range abilities, only wanted to force Alexander to reveal more of his skills. This time, it shot a thicker web toward him.

Alexander barely managed to twist his body in time, narrowly avoiding the sticky strands as they whizzed past his shoulder and struck a nearby tree with a loud snap!

The tree groaned, as the webbing spread across its trunk like hardened ropes. If that had hit him, he might have been decapitated.

"If one isn’t enough, what about another?" Alexander said coldly.

Without hesitation, he swung his blade again, its edge wrapped in a bluish energy. Another Crescent Blade Arc shot forth.

The spider twitched, its legs coiling as it dodged the incoming attack. Alexander’s strike tore through the earth, leaving a deep gouge in its wake.

Slicing through a large stone, his attack left another deep scar in the vicinity.

"This is the first time I’ve fought a beast so cautiously. Its intelligence might even surpass that of a human," he thought, his gaze fixed on the black spider.

Alexander decided to stop using his skills for the moment. If he kept spamming them, he would eventually exhaust himself.

The spider, tilting its head, observed him carefully.

Noticing that the human seemed to be recovering his stamina, the spider chose not to give him the chance.

A clicking noise echoed from its throat. Alexander, standing just a few steps away, narrowed his eyes in confusion.

"What is it doing now?" he mumbled.

Its front legs twitched, and in a flash, it wrapped its limbs in silk not just ordinary silk, but something that hardened into armor.

Thick layers of webbing encased its forelimbs, wrapping around them like natural gauntlets as hard as steel. The once frail-looking spider now appeared far more intimidating, its defenses reinforced.

Alexander’s eyes widened as he realized what it was doing.

"What the—" He didn’t even finish his sentence.

The spider lunged forward. Instead of retreating, Alexander steadied his breath and held his ground.

Seeing the sword coming to strike, the spider did not evade. Instead, it deliberately took the attack head-on.

As Alexander aimed to cleave through its legs, a loud metallic clang echoed through the air.

His sword shattered on impact, fragments flying in all directions.

A shockwave of vibrations traveled up his arms, numbing his grip as the blade broke apart, leaving him holding only the hilt.

The spider, noticing that its opponent’s weapon had broken, swung its massive, web-covered limb toward Alexander’s side. At such close range, dodging was impossible.

With no other choice, Alexander raised his right arm to block.

Thud!

The impact sent him flying from the side. He rolled across the ground before quickly steadying himself, regaining his balance.

Gazing at the spider, he couldn’t help but marvel at its intelligence again. It had deliberately used its silk armor to neutralize his strike, and it had worked perfectly.

Yet, the spider did not press forward. It simply stood there, watching him, waiting.

Alexander tightened his grip on the hilt of his shattered sword, then tossed it aside it was useless now.
