Chapter 75: Chapter 75. Sakura Yuuki
The School History Section, as its name implies, was the place housing all significant events or news about Xucha High School since its establishment.
For instance, there was that one day in a certain month of a certain year when Xucha High School made headlines in the local Iwate Prefecture news reports.
But in reality, this section recorded more than just these items.
For a newly founded private high school like Xucha High School, in order to expand the library’s School History Section, there would generally be class photos or class registers as part of the records.
And that was one of Beichuan Si’s purposes for this visit.
The bookshelves on the second floor were placed tightly against the circular walls, neatly arranged in an arc, with benches and tables set outside for students to easily access and borrow books. Although there were some bookshelves that had fallen over, overall, they still wouldn’t significantly impede Beichuan Si’s exploration.
Beichuan Si, carrying a flashlight, scanned the area with swift glances.
Xucha High School’s categorization of its history was quite clear; it seemed that the original school leadership had placed emphasis on this area. But who could have imagined that a fire and a murderer would destroy everything Xucha High School had.
A private high school barely over twenty years old couldn’t withstand such devastation, and amidst a chorus of condemnation, the entire school was ignominiously shut down.
It was said that the principal hanged himself afterward, but that had nothing to do with Beichuan Si’s reason for coming here.
Xucha High School establishment history, Xucha High School event history, Xucha High School...
Beichuan Si glanced at the bookshelf and then withdrew his attention.
Most of the books on this shelf pertained to Xucha High School and were completely unrelated to what he was looking for.
Beichuan Si turned and walked to the second bookshelf.
The content on this bookshelf was not much different from the first, also pertaining to Xucha High School.
"These five bookshelves all contain material about the school’s history since its establishment... but the albums and class registers aren’t here..." Beichuan Si couldn’t help but frown.
Could it be that he was mistaken? Did Xucha High School not collect things like collective graduation or class photo albums?
Wait a minute! Circular walls?
Xucha High School’s bookshelves were all square, and to arrange them so densely and neatly in a circular shape would surely leave some gaps, or hide some hard-to-notice corners.
Beichuan Si’s heart skipped a beat, and he approached the bookshelves.
All five shelves hid a corner, and in the dim environment coupled with the arrangement of tables and chairs, these spots would be invisible to most people who didn’t look for them.
Beichuan Si moved the bookshelf aside, revealing a corner.
1980-1983 First Batch Graduation Album, 1984-1987 Graduation Albums... 1988-1991 Graduation Albums...
One bookshelf hid three photo albums along with matching class registers.
The names were meticulously documented, including achievements like students winning a drawing award or performing an act of bravery.
"So that’s it, these class registers and photo albums were originally used to fill the gaps in the bookshelves, so they were hidden in such places," Beichuan Si scanned over the dense text on the cover, finally heaving a sigh of relief.
Thick dust had settled in the corner, and even the small exposed section was concealed.
Perhaps students from Xucha High School ten years ago wouldn’t have noticed such corners.
It didn’t take long for Beichuan Si to find the 2009 graduates’ photo album and class register.
However, due to the school’s closure before graduation, there weren’t many photos, and the entries in the class register were sparse.
But this was a clue, nonetheless.
Just as Beichuan Si embraced the photo album and class register, he felt an itch on his scalp.
It turned out that Nishijou Kurenai had climbed onto his head at some point.
From a distance, it looked as if a large bump had swollen up on Beichuan Si’s head.
"Kurenai," Beichuan Si, holding the class register and graduation album with one hand, expressionlessly plucked the proudly perched Nishijou Kurenai from his head, "Don’t make trouble."
But under Beichuan Si’s gaze, Nishijou Kurenai wriggled its body, and with its small hands, it pointed towards the reading room on the first floor to the right.
"Are you saying there’s something on the first floor?" Beichuan Si asked pensively.
The little doll nodded vigorously.
Beichuan Si slightly tugged at the locks of hair hanging on his forehead and placed Nishijou Kurenai back on his shoulder, then headed downstairs.
After navigating around several fallen bookshelves, Beichuan Si strode toward the right reading room as indicated by Nishijou Kurenai.
The reading room contained small book storage areas, as well as uniform standard desks and chairs.
Yet what captured Beichuan Si’s attention most was indeed the semi-ethereal girl emitting a faint white glow.
Wearing a uniform, she held an anthology in her hand while gently humming a subdued, melodious song tinged with a childlike quality:
"In September, the white rabbit left, pulling along a rice cake."
"In September, the black rabbit departed with you."
"In September, sakura scattered in the wind."
"Beneath the cherry blossom trees, corpses gracefully danced."
"Ah—singing the ballad, may those remaining at school be spirited away by shinobu?"
"May those still at the school be spirited away by shinobu?"
"May they—"
The singing abruptly stopped.
The girl in uniform spun her head around sharply.
Her black eyes were fixed directly on Beichuan Si.
Those eyes were as black as ink, like glittering obsidian.
Had they possessed whites, perhaps they would have been a beautiful pair of eyes.
Beichuan Si frowned, his expression blank, his voice coldly stating,
"Sakura blooms in March."
His blunt response made the nameless girl’s breath hitch, and the ghost girl chuckled amusingly,
"Eh? Is that really all you can think about after seeing me?"
Beichuan Si did not reply.
This unknown girl hovered between good spirits and vengeful ones and, like Nishijou Misaki, posed little threat to him.
"You’re the first person to enter Xucha Library in ten years, so I thought I’d tease you a bit. I didn’t scare you, did I?" the girl asked with a slight smile.
"..." Beichuan Si.
Beichuan Si didn’t answer her question, instead calmly gazing at her.
He was considering whether he should simply turn this girl in front of him into skill points for himself.
Sensing Beichuan Si’s eagerness from his eyes, the girl shivered, seemingly ready to leave immediately.
Her delicate face was filled with a look of having seen a ghost.
What was going on?
Beichuan Si instinctively glanced behind him but saw nothing particularly strange or ghostly.
Why did this ghost girl look as if she’d seen a ghost?
After a moment of silence, Beichuan Si finally spoke,
"Which year’s student are you?"
The girl trembled again, her voice faltering, "W-Why are you asking this?"
Beichuan Si’s voice was so cold it made her feel like the next second he might pull out some sort of sharp blade and slash her throat.
Beichuan Si remained silent, his expression unreadable as he drew a military knife with a sinister aura around it, saying in a flat tone,
"I’m only trying to help you."
"..." the ghost girl.
Seeing the glinting dagger and Beichuan Si’s stern expression, she swallowed,
"I’m from the class of ’09, my name is Sakura Yuuki."
