Chapter 68: Chapter 68. June 13, 2016
Mr. Beichuan glared at Tanaka Takashi and Yamakou Hideyasu before withdrawing his gaze.
He didn’t want to ponder what schemes Tanaka Takashi and Yamakou Hideyasu might be cooking up. Instead, he was more concerned with the building in front of him.
Xucha High School’s activity building.
This was, as people commonly referred to, the main hub for school clubs.
Tanaka Takashi and Yamakou Hideyasu wanted to venture to the dance classroom on the top floor to investigate the mirror rumored to be haunted.
The activity building of Xucha High School was completely swallowed by the darkness, its upper half bleak outline only revealed under the illumination of three flashlights.
The building was clad in withered ivy.
From Mr. Beichuan’s perspective, the windows of the activity building were obscured by the dense ivy, with small and large offshoots protruding like ghostly claws.
Mr. Beichuan stopped, and under the watchful eyes of Tanaka Takashi and Yamakou Hideyasu, it was as if he had been startled by this sinister and terrifying scene.
He was indeed frightened.
Tanaka Takashi and Yamakou Hideyasu breathed a sigh of relief.
Throughout the journey, Mr. Beichuan had remained unflustered, his calm demeanor making it seem as though he was merely visiting Xucha High School as a tourist.
Now, seeing that he could also be scared by a certain scene, Tanaka Takashi and Yamakou Hideyasu felt at ease.
At least their worries that the setup inside the activity building wouldn’t frighten Mr. Beichuan seemed to have been unwarranted.
But Tanaka and Yamakou quickly recalled Mr. Beichuan’s terrifying kick.
They both swallowed hard, starting to worry again that if Mr. Beichuan got too scared, he might shatter the bones of the staff playing ghosts or cause them concussions with a single kick.
"Haha... I didn’t expect Mr. Beichuan to be afraid of anything," Yamakou Hideyasu said, trying to make a joke, but he quickly felt the piercing stare from Mr. Beichuan.
That look made his scalp tingle, and after a long while, he forced a ’haha... haha...’ laugh, turning his head back and muttering softly with a hint of grievance:
"Being frightened isn’t something to be ashamed of."
However, Mr. Beichuan hadn’t actually been scared by the sinister and terrifying building. He had sensed something within the building.
He raised an eyebrow and pushed Nishijou Kurenai’s head, which was trying to emerge from the scarf, back in.
At that moment, Yamakou Hideyasu’s voice came:
"The entrance is over here."
Most of the doors to the activity building were sealed, leaving only a small, damaged opening at the bottom that people had to bend down to enter.
Yamakou Hideyasu and Tanaka Takashi took the lead, with Mr. Beichuan covering the rear as they sequentially entered the activity building.
A musty stench permeated the air, and other than that, there were no other smells.
It seems the building’s natural ventilation systems were still functional, allowing air to circulate, which, although unpleasant, at least wasn’t toxic.
Mr. Beichuan, wielding his flashlight, looked around.
Most of the ceiling’s plywood had slid off, revealing the severely deteriorated wires hanging down in lengths, resembling dismembered human arms.
The cold chill from the stairwells to the left and right made even Tanaka Takashi shiver.
The blond quickly steadied his action camera and began to explore as well.
Mr. Beichuan wasn’t talkative. Eventually, the entire building was filled only with the voices of Tanaka Takashi and their interaction with the viewers.
This was preferable.
Mr. Beichuan walked alone toward the left staircase, his gaze serene and flashlight steady in his hand.
The staircase leading to the second floor was half-collapsed, but climbing it posed no difficulty.
Beichuan Si moved forward with the sound of debris sliding down, a blood-stained, yellowed fragment of paper buried deep beneath caught his attention.
Beichuan Si picked it up and under the light of his flashlight, he saw the clearly visible writing on it.
June 13, 2016, cloudy. Nakajima and I came to Xucha Ghost School.
I had heard the terrifying ghost stories about this place, but when I actually ventured here at night, looking at its desolation only made my hair stand on end.
I felt something was not quite right; this place clearly differed from others we had explored, as if something was truly hidden here.
Ah, Nakajima is calling me again; I should be going.
The content on the paper ended there, but looking at the bloodstain, Beichuan Si inclined to think that the person who wrote this had met with some misfortune.
"Something left by people who came here for psychic exploration before, it might be useful," Beichuan Si muttered to himself, pocketing the piece of paper.
Just as he tucked the paper away, Tanaka Takashi’s voice came from nearby.
"The staircase here is still intact; we should be able to go up from here. Beichuan, don’t fall behind!"
"..." Beichuan Si remained silent, walking forward with his flashlight.
The staircase on the right seemed to have no major issues, with its basic structure still intact, and Yamakou Hideyasu had already gone up to the second floor.
"Follow me, Mr. Beichuan, there are quite a few forks in the path here, possibly for the literary and sports activities of students in the past; one could easily get lost," Tanaka Takashi advised, pausing only when Beichuan Si nodded before gesturing for him to catch up.
...
The corridor on the second floor was much narrower than on the first, eerily, despite there being no vents, a cold wind always howled overhead.
From Beichuan Si’s perspective, the dark society classrooms had an indescribable eeriness to them, looking down the corridor, the rows of dark door and window openings resembled cold, unblinking eyes.
Yamakou Hideyasu was standing in front of a society classroom door he had pulled open, explaining.
"We can see that, from ten years ago till now, the society classroom has gathered a lot of dust, still containing some books and pencils used by the people back then," Yamakou Hideyasu leaned out and beckoned Beichuan Si to come forward.
Just as Beichuan Si reached the doorway—
Creeeak—!!!!
Bang!!!
Under a spine-chilling sliding door sound, the door that was originally opened suddenly shut with a bang!
Yamakou Hideyasu did not miss a beat, his body shook from the ’fright’, his voice trembling as he said:
"Did you see that! Friends! There was no one in that classroom just now, but the door shut on its own! What is this? A message from the spirits? Are they not welcoming us?"
As he spoke, Yamakou Hideyasu sneakily glanced at Beichuan Si.
When he saw that the other was still expressionless, he couldn’t help but twitch the corner of his mouth.
They had used this little door trick many times, scaring many lucky fans terribly; some of the more timid girls were scared to the point of being unable to stand, their legs going soft.
But Beichuan Si showed none of those symptoms; he wasn’t looking at the door, but rather pensively glanced at himself.
This made Yamakou Hideyasu’s heart tighten.
Could Beichuan Si have noticed something?
But soon he let out a sigh of relief.
Beichuan Si had merely glanced briefly at him without a word.
His calm demeanor, in the eyes of the live stream viewers, set off another wave of excitement.
