Chapter 96: Chapter 93 If You Don’t Drink, Things Don’t Get Done
Lette was scheduled to meet with the envoy from the Elf Empire at his own house.
He planned to take advantage of breakfast to complete this meeting, thus maximizing time efficiency.
Since the kitchen was still under repair, Lette had breakfast brought over early from the Holy Rose Manor. When the elf envoy, Sofia Edmin, arrived, the food was still hot.
Three years apart, time had hardly left a mark on this female elf’s face.
She remained graceful and elegant, her golden curls paired with the refined features characteristic of elves, which was already captivating. Her curvaceous figure was still quite alluring.
After some pleasantries, they sat down to eat. The diet of the Elf Clan tends to be light, and Sofia found it somewhat hard to adjust.
"Why isn’t Mr. Wright making breakfast himself this time?"
"A couple of days ago, my kitchen was attacked by unknown terrorists, and it hasn’t been fixed yet..."
Sofia chuckled softly, "Mr. Lette, you’re so humorous. Someone dared to attack your manor in this Holy City?"
"Why not? There was even an assassination attempt on the Pope a few days ago."
Lette placed lettuce leaves between slices of bread, added two strips of bacon, spread some salad dressing, covered it with another piece of bread, and took a big bite.
The crunching sound made Sofia frown slightly.
"We’ve heard a bit about that incident, that it was the crazies from the Tower of Truth... How many years has it been since the destruction of the Tower of Truth, yet there are still remnants causing trouble."
"There must be someone supporting them from behind the scenes..."
Lette tossed half a homemade sandwich onto the plate, "After all these years, I still can’t get used to this thing. By the way, I heard you came on your own this time.
Where is your Princess?"
Sofia’s lip twitched, "Her Highness the Princess was so frightened by Mr. Wright’s conduct last time that she hasn’t recovered to this day. She still wakes up from nightmares in her sleep."
"Well, I truly apologize. At the time, I thought she was three or four hundred years old, so I didn’t avoid her.
I forgot that among your elf Longevity Species, this age isn’t considered adulthood."
Lette intentionally dipped a dinner knife in tomato sauce, then roughly smeared it on the bitten sandwich.
This act seemed to remind Sofia of some unpleasant memories, prompting her to cover her mouth instinctively.
"Miss Sofia, I’ve heard that the magic potions of the Elf Empire are the best on the continent. They’ve been quite popular recently."
"Ah? No! That’s not true, Mr. Wright must be mistaken. Our magic potions and magic materials are all for personal use only.
We’ve never traded them, let alone sold them to human countries."
Lette lifted an eyebrow, "Did I just mention humans?"
"Uh... what I mean is..."
"Miss Sofia, there’s no need to panic. The magic potions and magic materials are not contraband. Previously, if you sold them, you sold them; it’s all about making money, no harm in that.
But after this Holy Presence Ceremony, the situation has changed.
All the human Holy Countries must accept magic regulation. From mages to magic items, magic tools, and magic potions, everything must be constrained."
Sofia could no longer remain seated and stood up abruptly, "What? Mr. Wright, are you serious?"
"The Pope’s assassination is something the Holy Light Church cannot tolerate! The Church Court is extremely outraged. If it weren’t for me holding them back, this world would have long been drenched in blood."
Lette remained unperturbed, "This is already the Holy Sect’s most mild approach.
I know the strategy my mentor previously set was to prioritize conciliation and promote coexistence.
But you know what kind of person I am, Miss Sofia. I don’t like waiting until the knife is at my neck before taking action."
Staring at a stunned Sofia, a slight smile finally appeared on Lette’s face.
Lette believed that the elf clan, who revered life and nature, would never collaborate with the Tower of Truth.
However, their magic potions and magic materials became the fertile ground for poisonous thorns to sprout.
Hence, this blow was one Lette had to deliver.
Faced with Lette’s decisiveness, Sofia didn’t even have the courage to protest.
Although the Elf Empire still called itself an empire, it was living in conditions worse than the Dwarf Tribe.
After all, the dwarves’ ironworking skills were unmatched in the world, and they got along well with humans, enjoying ease and comfort in every aspect.
The elves were different; they were innately delicate and required high living environment standards and superior quality of life.
Rather than calling them a declining noble, it might be better to say they were holding onto face in an act of desperation.
Moreover, in the black market, elf slaves had always been hot commodities. Just a half-elf could fetch a sky-high price.
Given the small number of elves left in the Elf Empire, they could sell out in the black market in just three months.
Their continued existence was due partly to their location deep in the woods, giving them a geographical advantage.
Secondly, the Church maintained some semblance of propriety by openly restricting the capture of elves, forcing some actions to go underground.
If Sofia were dealing with the gentle Pope or any other member of the Church Court, she might indeed have argued her case.
But against him, Saint Wright, the Holy Sin, the unblinking Turbid Light, Sofia dared not act recklessly.
She wasn’t afraid of dying, but she feared dragging the entire elf clan into an abyss of disaster.
The Holy Light Church didn’t even need to target them directly; simply declaring that they would no longer pursue the elf slave incident could have unimaginable consequences.
