This Game Is Too Realistic -
Chapter 320.2: Unexpected Rewards (Teaser)
That was just a small part of this town. The hygiene of this place was deplorable. Although the issues went far beyond that. Due to the lack of nutrition, fuel, and equipment or gadgets to stay warm, people were fainting from hunger everyday. Even worse, some died from starvation.
As for the dead bodies, there was a high probability that they would be dragged to the nutrient cream synthesizer, which meant that they would be combined with other plant fibers, animal remains, and insects to artificially create a greenish paste-like substance.
Faces, pale and emaciated, were concealed by the darkness. People huddled on piles of trash that did not look like a proper shelter, resembling sewer rats. They cautiously observed this group of strangers who stood out like a sore thumb with curiosity. Quietly, they whispered with each other discussing the identities of these newcomers. “So… They are people from the New Alliance?”
“What the mayor said was true? It was not a joke?” The other exclaimed.
“Thank goodness. Finally, help has arrived.” One of them rejoiced.
Their voices became louder and louder as they got excited in their heated discussion. As the local residents were sizing up the group of newcomers behind Hunting Bow, the Bull and Horse Squad were also observing them quietly.
Walking behind Gale was Night Ten, who couldn’t help but hold his breath. Apart from the suffocating smell, he was also shaken up by the distressing scenes unfolding before his eyes. The place was akin to hell. The last time he had seen such a tragic scene was back in the dungeons of Bluestone County.
Unable to hold back his anger, Night Ten cursed in a low voice, “Those damn bandits should go to hell.”
Ample Time and Gale remained silent. The former seemed to view it as just a game setting, while the latter was naturally reserved and quiet. Old White, who was taking the lead, appeared to be burdened with thoughts.
When Hunting Bow noticed everybody's expressions, he explained, “This is the living area of the ordinary residents. Our resources are scarce, and it is already a struggle to maintain our current lives. My superior doesn't want me to bring you here. He advised me to avoid this area and only showcase the better side of this town, a better side of us. But if you truly wish to understand the real situation we are facing, no place is more genuine than this.”
Ample Time looked at him and asked, “Will bringing us here cause you trouble?”
Hunting Bow smiled sheepishly and replied, “ Why would it? Please don’t worry about me. My superior instructed me to follow your orders and I am just doing as I was told. If my superior brings this matter up, I’ll just say that you all insisted on coming.”
Old White looked around. Using not-so-fluent federation language, he asked, “You guys gathered so many people here in one place, aren’t you all afraid that the marauders will find this place?”
Hunting Bow replied, “There's no need to worry about that. The surface entrance has completely collapsed. We’ve sealed off the direct entrance from the subway station. The only way to get here from the outside is through a secret hidden door in the subway tunnel.”
At this moment, Old White suddenly thought of something. He whispered to Ample Time about the missions he received on the VM. Ample Time was dazed for a moment, then immediately turned to Hunting How and asked, “By the way, do you have anyone here with special talents?”
“Special talents?” Hunting Bow looked puzzled. “What kind of talents are you referring to?”
Ample Time tried to explain, “The skills like blacksmithing, craftsmanship, or any kind of expertise.”
Hunting Bow hesitated for a while before replying, “If it’s just having a set of skills, then the threshold seems to be quite low. Many survivors who came from Lagrange are craftsmen. Quite a number of people who used to live near the television broadcast station are talented in singing and some are good at blacksmithing. In the 4th New District survivor settlement, there are even some who are skilled fishermen and experts at stealing Crackleclaw Crab’s eggs.”
Ample Time silently noted down this information and continued to ask, “What about the others then, such as shelter residents?”
“Shelter residents? There is a shelter in West Continent City. However, as soon as the Fang Clan arrived, they closed their door to outsiders.” Hunting Bow replied.
Excited upon hearing this, Ample Time asked, “Then what is that shelter’s number? Do you know its exact location?”
“I think it should be Shelter 101. As for the exact location, I’m not so sure about that. But, I remember where they set up the camp on the surface. It should be somewhere…” Hunting Bow scratched the back of his head as he told Ample Time the location.
However, at that moment, a disheveled man suddenly darted out from somewhere near, tumbling and crawling near the feet of the group.
Everyone was startled by the man, but before they could recover, the disheveled man looked at them with pleading eyes and begged, “Are you people from the New Alliance? Please, I beg you, please help me!"
“What are you doing? Remove your hands…” Hunting Bow was about to chase him away, but Old White stopped him.
Old White reached out to the man on the ground and lifted him up. He looked at him and asked, “Get up first. Tell me your name.”
“My name is… Wang Zhong,” the man mumbled incoherently.
“Alright. Wang Zhong, what trouble have you encountered?” Old White asked.
The man who had just calmed down, suddenly became agitated again. “My wife is seriously ill,” he said hurriedly. “She won't be able to make it without antibiotics. Please, I beg you. Can you spare some medicine and food for me?”
Seeing the man’s desperate plea, Old White couldn't bring himself to refuse the man's request. Ample Time who was standing nearby realised his intentions and stopped him from reaching into his backpack.
“Every single one of them here needs medicine and food." Ample White said, "If you help him, there will soon be a second and a third person begging you for help.”
Old White looked at Ample Time and said, “So, are we just going to ignore him?”
Ample Time responded calmly, “Of course not. We will report this situation here to the administrator truthfully. It’s up to him to decide how to assist the local survivors.” He looked at Old White and continued, “There are over 5,000 people here. With the supplies we have on us, there won’t be enough for us to help them all.”
Old White fell into a moment of silence. Logically speaking, he felt that what Ample Time said was right. But emotionally, it was difficult for him to accept this. He could only blame the game for being overly realistic to the point that he was affected emotionally.
At this moment, the man named Wang Zhong suddenly spoke up, “I won’t take your things for free. I heard from the broadcast just now saying that you are planning to establish a survivor settlement here, am I right?”
Old White was still trying to comprehend what he was saying by reading the translation on the VM, while Ample Time, who immediately understood the man’s words, looked at him and said, “Yes, do you have any good ideas to share?”
Seeing that there was a chance, Wang Zhong swallowed and continued to speak, “No, I don’t have any ideas, but I do know that there’s a backup controllable fusion reactor hidden underground in West Continent City.”
As soon as Ample Time heard it, his expression immediately turned grave. He stared into the man’s eyes and asked, “Are you telling the truth?”
Wang Zhong nodded vigorously, emphasizing his sincerity with an oath. “I can vouch for it with my life! Those blue coats… The residents of Shelter 101, said it themselves. They said that the reactor was a civil defense facility built during the Federation Era. It was specifically prepared for the underground transportation network. It was said to have an output power that could reach the GM level. They were attempting to restore the reactor and had already succeeded in repairing half of it!”
After barely grasping his words aided by the translation tool, Ample Time immediately followed up with a question, “How do you know all of this?”
Wang Zhong immediately responded, “Because I used to live in their camp on the surface. Before they went back to the shelter, they had hired some locals in the camp to do tasks that they were not willing to do. It involved tasks like picking up trash, construction work, labor tasks, and taking care of the chores of their daily lives. I was a cook in their cafeteria. I overheard them mentioning it while having meals. They even joked that once they fixed the reactor, survivors all over the West Continent City wouldn't have to worry about electricity anymore.”
The group fell silent as they realized that if this reactor truly existed then that statement was certainly not a joke. It was a reactor with a GM-level output after all. In reality, just the output power of this reactor alone could easily surpass the total power output of many small countries’ electrical grids. So meeting the electricity needs of mere tens of thousands of survivors could be said to be more than sufficient.
Ample Time looked at Hunting Bow who was standing by his side in excitement. Hunting Bow was also baffled by what Wang Zhong had said. But after hesitating for a short while he nodded in response, “He’s telling the truth. Shelter 101 did hire some wastelanders living nearby and let them live within their camp. But the thing about the reactor, I don't know much about it.”
A controllable fusion reactor!
The group exchanged glances in excitement.
Currently, although the New Alliance had advanced energy storage methods like solid-state hydrogen, their methods of generating electricity remained outdated. It could be considered primitive even. If they could gain control of the fusion reactor, its impact on the trade and manufacturing industry of the New Alliance would be immense.
Ample Time tried his best to control his excitement and asked the man, “Do you know the location of that reactor?”
Wang Zhong nodded nervously and replied, “I can lead you there. But first, you need to cure my wife and I also need food that can sustain my family.”
Ample Time smiled and assured him, “Don't worry, a batch of supplies will be delivered here tonight. Whether it’s food or medicine, any reasonable requests will be fulfilled.”
Then, Ample Time turned towards Hunting Bow and said, “The information he has is crucial. I need you to ensure his and his family’s safety.” Hope Town had already joined the New Alliance. Ample Time believed that as long as these resistance group members were not foolish, they would definitely take his request seriously.
Sure enough, Hunting Bow’s expression turned serious upon hearing the request. He replied earnestly, “No problem, leave it to me.”
Ample Time nodded in satisfaction and continued, “Also, please help us spread the word around town, telling everyone that if there’s any similar information, regardless of its importance, do make sure to inform us immediately. Once we confirm the value of the information, the Alliance will definitely reward them handsomely.”
