Chapter 52: 052 Performance Appraisal Coming
Li Qingde leaned forward over the table slightly, his expression very serious. "Xiao Du, after the evaluation group arrives this afternoon, you need to prepare your report. There’s one more thing: I’ve already contacted the patients’ families, and they will come to the Hospital this afternoon."
Du Heng looked at Li Qingde in confusion and asked, "What are they coming for? Follow-up appointments?"
"It’s partly for follow-ups, but the main reason is they want to present you with a silk banner."
Du Heng stood up hurriedly, waving his hands repeatedly. "Absolutely not! I can’t accept that."
Li Qingde was displeased. He had gone to great lengths to arrange this, a perfect opportunity to dramatically boost Du Heng’s standing and influence before the leaders. So why on earth would Du Heng refuse?
"Why not?"
"The patients haven’t fully recovered yet, and I haven’t fulfilled my duties as a Doctor. I’d be ashamed to accept it."
Li Qingde glared at this coward and snapped, "Their conditions have improved! Some can even stand and walk. How is that ’not cured’? This is a token of their appreciation, expressing their hope that you’ll continue to treat them diligently. What’s wrong with that?"
Du Heng was speechless, but he still felt something was amiss.
"Besides, if the silk banner arrives and you refuse it, what will the patients and their families think? Won’t that just add to their worries? Would that be conducive to their recovery?"
Li Qingde persuaded Du Heng earnestly. Seeing Du Heng fall silent, he settled the matter with finality, "Alright, that’s settled then. Go back and get ready."
Du Heng wanted to say more, but Li Qingde just ushered him out.
As Li Qingde closed the door, he added, "By the way, Wu Buwei is quite capable. Take him to the meeting as well."
Is that really considered ’quite capable’?
You’re just trying to silence Wu Buwei, aren’t you?
After all, only Du Heng and Wu Buwei knew the truth of the matter.
Du Heng returned to his office, his mind a whirl of confusing thoughts.
Wu Buwei’s face lit up when he saw Du Heng enter. Ma Zichen, beside him, was also smiling. "Senior Brother, we’re ready! You can assess us now."
Du Heng, however, was in no mood to assess them. He ignored their eager gazes and said, "Zichen, keep entering those disease records. There aren’t many left, so hurry and finish them. Buwei, come with me for a moment."
Wu Buwei, though confused, followed Du Heng out into the Hall.
Du Heng pointed to the bulletin board and whispered, "Take a look."
Wu Buwei glanced at the bulletin board, puzzled. "What’s wrong with it? Seems fine to me. It’s just our work photos for the month. Hmm? Was the Dean there too? I don’t recall that."
Wu Buwei leaned closer, thinking his memory was playing tricks on him, but then realization dawned. "OH, OH, OH! Senior Brother..."
"Quiet!" Du Heng quickly cut off Wu Buwei’s impending shout. "See the problem now?"
Wu Buwei nodded frantically. "I see it."
"Do you know what to say if someone asks?"
"I don’t."
Wu Buwei’s prompt reply nearly made Du Heng stumble.
Du Heng glared at Wu Buwei, pulled him closer, and whispered, "Don’t you think before you speak?"
"Should I go demand an explanation from the Dean?"
"Don’t be ridiculous! Why would *you* go? Think again!"
Wu Buwei wrinkled his nose in thought. "Then, should I say that the Dean is very supportive of our work, accompanied us to the front lines, and set an example for us young people?"
"There’s still room for improvement. Think about it some more."
Du Heng then told him about the evaluation group’s visit that afternoon, warning him not to let anything slip.
While the two were whispering in the Hall, the logistics department of the Health Clinic also sprang into action.
The cleaning Aunties were meticulously inspecting every corner: the main gate, both sides of the entrance, and the furnishings in the Hall.
Song also hurried along with quick, short steps. Spotting Du Heng in the Hall, he called out directly, "Xiao Du, stop chatting and get your office cleaned!"
With that, he headed to the adjacent cashier room and then the Internal Medicine Clinic.
Wang Zhenzhen came out with a rag. Seeing Du Heng about to head back, she pulled him aside and asked softly, "How are things?"
Du Heng smiled and whispered back, "Pretty much as you predicted."
Wang Zhenzhen smiled. "Hurry up and get busy then."
With that, she went to wash her rag.
Song was not tall, a kind-hearted man who was usually gentle and refined.
But today, it was as if he had wheels on his feet, dashing around so quickly he almost seemed to float!
"Why are you two still lingering here? Get busy! Especially the practice room opposite your office. Everything must be neatly arranged, and ensure it’s spotless, with no corners missed."
Without waiting for Du Heng or Wu Buwei to reply, he then pushed open the door to the Pharmacy Room. "You two, get off your phones and clean this Pharmacy Room properly! The shelves at the back are covered in dust. Can’t you see?"
Du Heng and Wu Buwei wasted no more time. They hurried back to their office and called Ma Zichen to help them start cleaning.
In truth, there wasn’t much to clean. Between themselves and the custodial staff, the office was cleaned every morning and was already quite spotless.
However, this type of cleaning was a tradition, a display of "respect" for visiting superiors.
Time passed in a flurry of "busyness," yet not a single Patient came to disturb them.
At 2:40 in the afternoon, three sedans drove into the backyard of the Health Clinic.
A group of twelve or thirteen people emerged, mostly middle-aged individuals in their forties, along with two silver-haired seniors who appeared to be in their sixties or seventies.
Li Qingde and Song greeted them with smiles and ushered everyone into the meeting room.
Du Heng, Wu Buwei, and Ma Zichen watched the commotion from the window. As the group disappeared inside, Wu Buwei sighed, "So many experts."
Ma Zichen also clicked his tongue. "It’s not just the number. For an evaluation of a mere Health Clinic, they even invited Deputy Director Xu Pinglin from Digestion Department 1 of Provincial First Hospital. That’s just too much."
Wu Buwei hurriedly leaned forward, his eyes darting around. "Which one, which one?"
"The one with all the white hair."
"He’s so old, yet still a Deputy Director? I thought he was one of the leaders from the Health Bureau."
"He’s not old at all; he’s only thirty-eight this year."
"Then why is his hair all white?"
"Perhaps from worry."
"Shouldn’t worry cause hair loss?"
Du Heng almost laughed aloud hearing Wu Buwei and Ma Zichen’s absurd exchange. "Alright, you two, hurry up and finish entering those disease records."
After speaking to them, Du Heng once again reviewed the report he had hastily prepared at noon, quickly revising any awkward or unclear sections.
About half an hour later, Li Qingde’s voice echoed from the hallway.
Song also pushed the door open and came in. "Xiao Du, hurry out! You need to accompany the leaders on their tour."
