Chapter 339: Chapter 283: The One I Want to Film Is You

The story is simple as well.

Lin Qingyue’s new movie can be summarized in just two or three hundred words.

It’s about two students who frequently transfer schools because of their parents’ jobs, who end up at the same school, and then they’re drawn to each other because of their shared experiences, developing mutual feelings, and they agree to apply for the same high school.

But then the female lead transfers schools again, and they can only stay in touch through letters. Then, the male lead has to transfer as well, to a very distant place, and correspondence by letter takes a long time. The male lead gathers his courage and takes the train alone to the girl’s city to see her before he leaves.

The two of them kiss under the cherry blossoms, firmly believing that they will always be together.

Then the timeline jumps to the male lead’s new environment after transferring, where a girl called Xiaohua likes him, but she finds that his heart has never paused for her from beginning to end.

Then the timeline skips again, to years later in the city, where the male lead and the female lead—who is now engaged to someone else—brush past each other at a railway crossing...

That’s it, just that.

There aren’t any intense conflicts or clashes, the whole thing is filled with character monologues and stream of consciousness scenes.

If it were to be released as a commercial film, for sure it could put many audience members to sleep.

Even as an art film, it’s a bit too light and fresh, so Wu Mu is a bit perplexed about what Lin Qingyue really wants to shoot.

Seeing his confident demeanor, Lin Qingyue becomes interested and adopts an attitude as if to test him, "So what do you think this movie is about?"

What story does it tell?

On the surface, it’s naturally a love story.

The male and female leads like each other. Even after many years, they can’t stop thinking about each other. The second female lead likes the male lead but can only keep her feelings to herself in secret.

But...

Wu Mu thought for a moment, "I think it’s a story about reality."

"How so?" Lin Qingyue asked with interest.

"Two students who liked each other during their school days, no matter how firm or passionate they were at the time, but as time goes by and distance increases, without common topics, their relationship eventually fades."

It’s precisely the reality of it, much like long-distance relationships in real life.

In the beginning, you swear oaths from the heart, thinking the other person is the one and only in your life, but the longer you talk, the less you have to say, and after a while, it ends in regret.

"However, the first half is very realistic, the second half not so much. Normally, this kind of separation from student days wouldn’t linger in the mind for so long after growing up, since it’s not a close kinship, there isn’t that much of an emotional foundation, and at most, it would just be a sense of nostalgia."

In the story, many years after the separation, the male lead still can’t let go in his heart, which to him seems a bit contrary to reality.

"I see, that makes sense."

Lin Qingyue propped up her chin, not commenting on whether Wu Mu’s understanding was right or wrong.

Wu Mu bluntly asked, "Director Lin, what is the theme you want to shoot?"

"The theme I want to shoot..." Lin Qingyue began, then paused and smiled, "You’ll know when it’s finished."

Hmm?

Still playing coy?

Wu Mu looked at Lin Qingyue with a subtle gaze, "Director Lin, you’re not like that French director from before, are you? The type who doesn’t explain the film and makes the actors reshoot over and over, just to get the shots you want?"

Why are all the directors he knows like this?

Wang Ren does filmmaking the same way. Is it that art film directors all like to be riddles, speaking in enigmas?

Lin Qingyue watched him amused, "I wouldn’t dare make you reshoot repeatedly. Mainly, I don’t want you to have a preconceived stance. Acting deliberately according to my thinking might actually lead to unnatural performances."

"Isn’t it a good thing for an actor to lean towards the theme the director wants to shoot?" Wu Mu asked, curious.

"Normally it is, but I think you can perform what I’m thinking just by being natural. So telling you now might actually make your performance less natural."

Now Wu Mu was genuinely puzzled. What exactly did Lin Qingyue want to shoot, thinking he could do well in a normal state?

...

Filmmaking is different from shooting TV dramas.

Even if it’s just a small-budget art film, the budget is more than ten times less than Wang Ren’s drama series, and the funding is even tighter.

But the standards required are also clearly more detailed.

Wu Mu has been in the group for three days now, and the movie hasn’t officially started shooting.

These three days have been all about script reading, costume fittings, and getting the main actors to get to know each other.

Especially getting Liu Miao, who plays the second female, acquainted with Wu Mu.

It is only through chatting over the past few days that Wu Mu realized that Liu Miao had never filmed a movie before and hadn’t appeared on any camera at all.

She is a freshman at the Beijing Normal University, just walking down the street when she was spotted by Lin Qingyue passing by, who then thought she was a good fit, did a simple screen test, and pulled her in to film the movie.

A normal student, who was just a high school student a few months ago, it’s no wonder she seemed so nervous when she saw Wu Mu.

However, over these three days, she quickly became less nervous, only she seemed a bit...

Too enthusiastic—it’s just way too much!

Imagine, in real life, suddenly meeting a star who’s way more beautiful than Gao Yuanyuan or Liu Yifei, and then this person is incredibly kind, treating you just like a regular friend, without any condescension or impatience, being attentive and responsive in every aspect...

Liu Miao is feeling exactly that way now, head over heels, waking up every day wanting to chat with Brother Wumu.

Watching her holding the script, heading over to discuss the plot with Wu Mu again, the chatty Lou Ziwen couldn’t help but laugh heartily, "Ah Miao, you have to be careful. At this rate, Director Lin will make you wear small shoes."
