Chapter 332: Chapter 279: Could this be Wu Mu’s Acting!?_2

"Just one look at that face and it’s unforgettable."

Apart from his over-distinctive features like those circulating online, his personality was indeed as rumored on the internet.

Upon entering, he scanned the screening room, nodded and greeted everyone, then made his way directly to a few seats in the front row on the left-hand side and sat down.

This... not mingling with them to make a good impression could still be somewhat understood, given the number of people there.

But not even talking to those video platform bigwigs in the front row?

One could only say that he really didn’t seem like a star in the industry.

Fu Wenchuan shook his head slightly, still thinking that this man was not really good at networking.

Who would have thought that the people from Tencent Video in the front row would actually take the initiative to stand up, walk over to Wu Mu, and greet him with a smile.

Then, under the lead of the Tencent Video staff, representatives from other production companies also stood up one by one.

Fu Wenchuan was taken aback.

Not long after Wu Mu had taken his seat, Yang Rongfa and Wang Ren arrived with their entourage.

Yang Rongfa was undoubtedly very savvy; not only did he address everyone on stage to express thanks, but he also singled out the visiting platform representatives for special appreciation.

After the speech ended, the lights in the screening room dimmed bit by bit, and the official showing of the film began.

"Clang clang clang~"

"Pick up the pace a bit more. Master Wang, make some noise."

"Listen."

"Woo~"

The film started with a steam train clattering through a cornfield, as the boiler man told the train driver to make some noise.

Then, the loud train whistle sounded.

Awesome!

Fu Wenchuan silently praised.

He hadn’t expected that Wang Ren could actually create a cinematic texture in the series.

Like Wang Ren’s previous films, it was simple but with a distinctive texture.

From the opening shot, the series’ style was immediately apparent.

A show that could feature such a shot, regardless of the story, already earned a high technical score.

And as he continued watching, Fu Wenchuan found that the story wasn’t as confusing as he had assumed; it was quite concise and fast-paced.

The beginning flashed back from eighteen years ago when the main character Wang An was a train driver to eighteen years later when he became a taxi driver; then his brother-in-law Gong Biao appeared.

The two were involved in tracking down a person who had committed a hit-and-run using a cloned license plate from Gong Biao’s taxi, eventually leading them to the cornfield from the opening scene, where they lost the trail.

In between, the series interwove both characters’ situations: Wang An had a son who studied painting, a masseuse with an obvious interest in him, while Gong Biao had a dissatisfied wife who ran a beauty parlor, but he remained cheerful...

Not a single shot was wasted; everything succinctly moved the story forward while deftly detailing the protagonist’s circumstances.

However...

Fu Wenchuan watched as Wang An chased into the cornfield and then flashed back to eighteen years earlier, and he slightly shook his head.

These arthouse directors’ penchant for showiness was truly unchangeable.

Such narrative complexity was no issue for him; he was used to it.

But for the majority of ordinary viewers, such complexity would undoubtedly make it harder to follow the story, which wouldn’t benefit a series aiming for big sales.

Fortunately, even after the flashback to eighteen years prior, the pace remained quick: the disappearance of a Hong Kong businessman, workers protesting due to a halt in production, a case of dismemberment, and the protagonist Wang An becoming involved, with his brother-in-law from eighteen years ago making an appearance.

By the end of the first episode, so much had been neatly conveyed amidst the busy narrative.

Fu Wenchuan was almost spellbound; he almost forgot about Wu Mu as the episode hadn’t shown him yet until...

The screen went dark as if the curtain had fallen, and just when everyone at the screening was about to whisper to each other, thinking the first episode had ended...

The screen lit up again.

A school bus welcoming newcomers drove across the screen and stopped in front of a medical college.

The camera focused on the students slowly disembarking, then gradually moved to the entrance of the medical college.

Two people sitting at the entrance appeared in the frame.

This shot was the one filmed earlier where Wu Mu and Sun Yueqing first met in the series.

Fu Wenchuan, looking at Wu Mu on the screen, half concealed in shadows, his presence subtly fluctuating with the shadow of a banner waving over his head, was completely taken aback.

Wu Mu?

This shot... is kind of interesting.

A hint of surprise flickered in Fu Wenchuan’s eyes.

Even though the film’s color tone hadn’t changed at all, it was as if the dull, down-to-earth shots featuring Wang Ren were coated with a bright filter.

The moment Wu Mu made his entrance, it was as if he had turned up the brightness of the screen several notches.

In an instant, the entire atmosphere and image on the screen brightened.

From the sudden whispers that erupted in the projection room, it was clear that everyone was somewhat startled.

The film continued to play on the screen as Wu Mu’s friend approached to flirt, and then Sun Yueqing got out of the car...

Having seen many films, Fu Wenchuan had become sensitive to the director’s subtle techniques and applications.

Like this shot, for instance, which offered a view over Sun Yueqing’s shoulder, as if observing the situation at the medical college from his perspective, moving slowly.

Then, as it panned along, Wu Mu’s figure entered the frame.

After a slight, seemingly unstable shake of the camera, the focus settled on him, with his figure taking the central position.

Fu Wenchuan noticed the intention behind the small shaky move, but despite knowing its purpose, it felt as though Sun Yueqing, who had just gotten out of the car, had her heart lurch slightly along with the camera.

Then, everyone followed alongside Sun Yueqing’s fluttering heart right up to Wu Mu, to ask him for directions, "Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to Building No. 8?"

Wu Mu, who was listening to a cassette, looked up.

And as he lifted his head, previously in the shadows, the darkness faded away.

Wu Mu now stood under the sun, his face gleaming with a golden glow in the sunlight...

"Holy shit!"

A chorus of astonishment burst out in the projection room.

This shot maxed it out!

The look in Fu Wenchuan’s eyes was no longer just a flash of surprise, but his entire being jolted.

How could it be shot this well?

Could Wang Ren actually film such shots?

If the previous episodes were deemed engaging, captivating him, then this particular shot was nothing short of breathtaking.

The thought that had previously crossed Zhao Qihui’s mind now flickered through his head as well; if this shot were to be the cover of their magazine, it could potentially increase their issue’s sales by a significant margin.

Why does this suddenly feel a bit off?

Before he came, he hadn’t even considered Wu Mu delivering a stunning performance, he was originally speculating how Wu Mu might drag the production down.

Yet now, with this shot, it wasn’t about dragging the project down; all the content that had come before didn’t seem as memorable as this one.

Fu Wenchuan mused with a sense of oddity.

The shot had already impressed him enough, but then, to think, the episode hadn’t even ended yet.

The screen flashed back to eighteen years later, where the main character, Wang An, after receiving a photo of a figure’s back, prepared a table full of dishes, poured himself a glass of wine, and slowly looked across the table.

Across from him, drenched, pale-faced, trembling slightly, and with eyes full of terror, Wu Mu appeared on the screen.

Fu Wenchuan’s initial awe had not yet dissipated when his expression froze instantaneously; his entire body felt like it had been plunged into icy water, his limbs gone cold.

Holy shit!

Holy shit!!

Could that be Wu Mu!?

Could that be Wu Mu’s acting!?

The previous breathtaking shot could be excused, perhaps attributed to Wu Mu’s looks.

But what about the acting in this shot!?

Just watching it made him break out into goosebumps!

At first glance, it was as if he was truly witnessing a struggling drowning victim, so empathetic that his hairs stood on end.

Fu Wenchuan inhaled sharply.

This was just absurd!

He had previously thought Wu Mu’s new album would be the biggest highlight of the series, but now he realized he had been completely mistaken.

Turns out, Wu Mu’s previously criticized Mu’s acting was the actual biggest highlight of the show!

So it seemed Cui Fu and the others had been telling the truth...
