Chapter 138: Chapter 138 Accepting an Exclusive Interview

Zhou Min didn’t speak, only asking again with her eyes, Lin Qingyue, are you serious?

Lin Qingyue gave back a laugh that said she wasn’t joking, "Alright, let’s talk later, let’s move the stuff together for now."

Wu Mu curiously looked at the things in the back of the pickup truck, "What’s this?"

"A complete outdoor cinema system. We’ll watch a movie in your yard after dinner."

Outdoor cinema system?

All this?

Lin Qingyue noticed his confusion and explained with a smile, "It’s a rather high-end set, both the picture and sound quality are better."

That’s cool.

Typical of a director, they always go for quality.

Wu Mu helped Lin Qingyue move the stuff into his courtyard, then went to brush his teeth and wash his face, while also watching her set everything up.

However, after Lin Qingyue spent half the morning tweaking it, he realized something was amiss, "Director Lin, is watching a movie all you prepared for this gathering?"

What about food and drinks?

Wasn’t it said it’s a get-together to eat?

"You’ll see in a bit."

Yeah, Wu Mu did indeed find out soon enough.

Wu Mu watched as each of Lin Qingyue’s friends arrived, each carrying loads of food and drink, and was at a loss for words. So her idea of hosting a gathering meant guests bring their own provisions.

Besides Zhou Min, Lin Qingyue had four other friends.

Three men and one woman.

A woman about thirty, with a calm and professional look in her eyes, was a producer who had invested in several of Lin Qingyue’s short films, named Zheng Qiuxia.

A fair and slightly chubby man, Lin Qingyue’s childhood friend who worked in a government agency, named Chen Qian.

A man looking around twenty-seven or twenty-eight with black-rimmed glasses worked at the China Film Group, one year senior to Lin Qingyue, and was named Geng Zetong.

Approximately in his forties or fifties, with a somewhat bitter expression, the man was Lin Qingyue’s regular assistant director, named Feng Shang.

These people either had been in touch with Lin Qingyue beforehand or had communicated with Zhou Min, but none of them showed much surprise towards Wu Mu on the surface.

In their hearts, though, they were certainly sizing up Wu Mu.

Lin Qingyue bringing them to Wu Mu’s house for a gathering was both to introduce new friends to him and to introduce Wu Mu as a new friend to them.

They were all old friends who knew Lin Qingyue well and understood that she had high standards at her core. Her willingness to introduce Wu Mu to them surely meant Wu Mu had some qualities worth knowing.

Hmm, after sizing him up, they began to wonder if Lin Qingyue was blinded by a pretty boy because apart from his looks, they couldn’t see anything particularly outstanding about him.

But while they thought this, they didn’t show it on their faces.

Lin Qingyue’s old pal, Chen Qian, made himself comfortable by lying down on a lounger in Wu Mu’s courtyard, sighing, "Wu Mu, you should have bought a house here sooner. It’s much more comfortable than gathering at her place, where I’m always scared Director Lin might come back."

When this topic arose, Zhou Min very much agreed, nodding her head, "It’s always like walking on eggshells."

Lin Qingyue laughed, "Hey, my dad hasn’t really done anything to you guys, has he, to make you so scared?"

"Can’t help it; Director Lin just has a very imposing presence," Chen Qian explained as he lay comfortably on the lounger and even had a suggestion for Wu Mu, "Why don’t you put a few tables here, Wu Mu? There’s nowhere to put the food and drinks."

The producer named Zheng Qiuxia wasn’t as clueless and apologized, "Qingyue didn’t tell us you moved, so we came empty-handed and didn’t bring any gifts."

Wu Mu didn’t mind and waved his hand, "No need for any gifts."

But Zheng Qiuxia seemed to contemplate for a moment, then looked at Zhou Min, "How about we have Min write a special report for you as our housewarming gift?"

Zhou Min looked incredulously, "Why do you offer a gift that means I have to do the work?"

But she didn’t refuse, generously waving her hand, "Sure, I’ve got to interview someone anyway, Wu Mu, when are you free?"

An interview with Young Weekly, a publication with a bit of official backing, was indeed a positive move for Wu Mu, a fallen idol, even though he didn’t really care about the impact. However, there was no reason to refuse their kindness. Accepting the interview was also part of an artist’s job; earning some points wouldn’t hurt, after all.

"I’m free recently, my schedule is open."

"Great, I’ll go back and get ready before contacting you."

The exclusive interview was thus confirmed.

Afterward, everyone gathered for a meal and a chat, and the overall atmosphere was quite relaxed.

It could be said that Lin Qingyue’s judgment in making friends was really something; although it was apparent that her friends had significant backgrounds, they were all pleasant to be around.

They didn’t carry the ostentation and arrogance typical of second-generation elites.

Of course, it probably also had a lot to do with the fact that Lin Qingyue was the one who introduced him; Wu Mu could tell that within their small group, Lin Qingyue was the core.

Wu Mu had a good impression of Lin Qingyue’s friends.

And Lin Qingyue’s friends clearly had a decent impression of him as well.

Before meeting, Wu Mu had thought a washed-up star would be woefully out of place among them.

But upon actually conversing, he found it wasn’t the same at all. The impression Lin Qingyue suggested—that they were all good people—might not have been immediately apparent, but their ease in conversation certainly was.

This Wu Mu really was different from other stars; he was very relaxed, with none of the various preoccupations or thoughts, making for easy communication.

The dinner and chat were both quite enjoyable, but then came the movie watching...

Wu Mu watched the incredibly large outdoor screen, upon which colors were changing wildly like a slideshow, and he was speechless.

What kind of ghost movie is this? This is just pure light pollution.

Lin Qingyue, sitting next to him, noticed his lack of interest and laughed, "This is Director Wang Ren’s new work, a kind of experimental avant-garde film. I went out of my way to get a copy. Here, it’s depicting the protagonist’s inner struggle."

What could Wu Mu say? "I don’t understand it, but I’m profoundly shocked."

Fortunately, he wasn’t the only one who couldn’t understand; Chen Qian looked at him with some relief, "Brother, finally someone who understands me. Isn’t this just some pretentious nonsense? Bloody inner struggle."

He protested, "Can we watch some films that people can actually enjoy next time?"

Lin Qingyue laughed, "Sure, next time I’ll find a commercial film to show."

Speaking of films, it reminded her, "Oh right, Wu Mu, there are only two episodes left in this season of Star Agency. I’m planning to make a longer one and split it into two parts. Then after Star Agency ends, I’m going to prepare a short film of about forty minutes. I think you’d be perfect for the male lead role, are you interested?"

Filmmaking?

Wu Mu was, of course, interested in making films.

But...

"You’re making an art film, right?" Wu Mu asked.

Lin Qingyue nodded, "Yes, a low-budget art film."

"Then you definitely can’t afford my usual fee."

Even though Wu Mu might be on a downward slope, as a second-tier star, he could still command a fee of nearly ten million for a film.

A low-budget art film could not possibly afford to pay that much for a star.

Lin Qingyue spoke honestly, "At most, I can only offer you a million or so. But this film is aimed at winning awards. If we succeed, it will be beneficial for your career."

Aiming for awards?

Wu Mu wasn’t surprised; Lin Qingyue, who had previously won a short film award, was bound to think of aiming for awards again with her art film.

If there really was a chance to win, then it might well be worth it.

But these things were still early days, "I’ll contact you after preparations are done, and I’ll let you see the script then."

It was a matter not yet set in stone,

After the movie ended and after more chatting, today’s gathering came to a close.

He ended up inexplicably taking on two jobs.

The film was still a ways off, but the exclusive interview was sought by Zhou Min the very next day.
