Chapter 630: Side Story 1. The Twilight Zone - 12

Bassena was standing near the head of the examination bed, so he couldn’t see Zein’s face right away. But the guide hadn’t been moving or reacting at all, eyes only looking at the monitor facing them.

What is this? Is he not happy? As expected, is it too much for him to have twin boys? Are they reminding him of his little brothers?

All kinds of questions full of worry swirled in Bassena’s mind, but the answer could only come by direct inquiry. Swallowing nervously, Bassena held the guide’s shoulder and carefully tried to look at that pretty face. "Z-Zein? Are you al--"

"Twins..." the guide, who finally got out of his daze, muttered. He turned his head toward Bassena and stretched his lips wide. "We have twins!"

A pair of sparkling blue eyes, blush spreading across lifted cheeks, and a smile...a smile so radiant Bassena’s heart stopped for a second, before beating increasingly fast from how beautiful that face was. Bassena had no idea that his already pretty fiance could become even more beautiful, splendid, ethereal...

Wait--this wasn’t the time for that.

"Oh..." Bassena opened his mouth dumbly. "Yeah..."

"Haha!"

Despite the obviously dumb look on his fiance’s face, Zein was laughing lightheartedly. Even the nurses were blushing, feeling the room got brighter suddenly. The small laughter sounded like a melodious ring of a bell, clear and soothing.

And not at all what Bassena expected.

He had thought that having twins would traumatize Zein, or at least make him sad. Knowing the guide, it might seem like a cruel twist of fate. Honestly, Zein would have thought so if it wasn’t for the vision and the dream he had.

The vision of talking with his grown-up brothers, and a dream he suddenly remembered.

It was a dream he had on a flight to the Southern Kingdom. A vague dream about two figures with eyes that resembled Zein and Bassena. He had no idea what that dream was about before, but it appeared from time to time, almost like Bassena’s house on a cliff. And now, he finally realized what that dream was about.

Must have been from their future sons, right?

It was remembering that dream that made Zein lay there wordlessly until Bassena got worried.

The Doctor chuckled at both Bassena’s dumbfounded face and Zein’s uncharacteristic wide smile. "I’m glad that it’s a welcomed piece of news, but--" she pointed at Zein with the ultrasound wand as a nurse wiped the excess gel off Zein’s stomach. "You’ll have to take care of yourself even better from now on. Twins in male guides are usually small since they have smaller wombs than women."

"Ah, I see," Zein nodded. The smile had gone from his face as he returned to his serious mode. Bassena also stopped being stunned and reflexively straightened his back while raising his hand, ready to take a note in his commlink.

"It doesn’t mean they’ll be more fragile, but having two fetuses means you have two extra people in your body, so caution is a must."

"I understand!" Bassena nodded seriously, although the warning was pointed at Zein.

"Pfft--yes, we understand."

The Doctor chuckled again. "But well, don’t get nervous or stressed out because of it, since stress is bad for the babies. That being said..."

"Yes?" Zein, who was in the middle of getting out of the examination bed, paused.

"W-what’s wrong?"

"It’s not always the case, but..." the Doctor smiled. "The hormonal effect might be...quite severe--especially since this is also your first pregnancy."

"Ah..."

"No worries!" Bassena clenched his fist in the air. "I’m ready for anything. I’ll do anything!"

Zein exchanged a glance with the Doctor and the nurses, before chuckling at the enthusiastic esper. Despite being terrified at first, Bassena’s tenacity truly shone at a time like this.

No--rather, it was good that Bassena was scared. He was cautious of everything. Zein got stuffy at how protective Bassena became, but it also meant the guide always had regular meals guaranteed, and the esper would run even to the Western Republic if he needed to, fetching some snacks or whatever that Zein wanted.

All kinds of medicines and magical supplements were available at home, and Bassena always filled the fridge with the best ingredients. Zein couldn’t even trip since Bassena’s instinct worked so well through their bond, and a slight stumble would make the esper teleport to his side right away, ready to catch him.

Anyway, an overprotective partner would always be better than an ignorant one.

"Hearing that from A Saint class esper is truly reassuring," the Doctor laughed before ending their session with a few more pieces of advice that Bassena immediately took note of.

When they left the examination room, the couple visibly looked brighter than when they came. Their steps even got lighter, and Zein was smiling easily. It was good that they always came and went through the emergency stairs to avoid other people, or someone would already snap a picture or two.

Even Bassena was tempted to take one. In fact, he was about to when Zein’s happy smile turned into a smirk. "Why?"

Zein glanced at the esper with a twinkling in his eyes. "Remember when the Elder said he couldn’t die before seeing my ’children’?"

Bassena arched his brow before smirking along with the guide. "Heh--who would have thought it truly becomes ’children’."

Zein laughed and nodded. "Without even going through another preg--urk--"

"W-what’s wrong?"

They immediately stopped when Zein clasped his mouth. Bassena held the guide and asked worriedly, looking up and down to see if there was anything wrong.

"...feels sick," Zein grumbled and frowned in annoyance.

Bassena swallowed a breath of relief and stroked the guide’s back gently. "Eat this for now," he took out a tamarind candy that Ludya gifted them and popped it into Zein’s parted lips. It was round and covered in sugar, and Zein took a deep breath when the sweet and sour sensation put a slight relief in his solar plexus.

Still, it was only a temporary measure, enough until they could find a restroom for Zein to throw up properly. Bassena summoned the hospital’s map to see the nearest restroom from the emergency exit’s door and took out a cap to cover Zein slightly.

"Can you walk? Should I carry you?" Bassena whispered while they hurriedly walked through the corridor.

"No, I can walk," Zein shook his head, before slowing down slightly. "Rather--"

"Yes?"

Zein licked his lips. "I want mangoes."

"Alright, I’ll--"

"The sour one; the one which skin is still green and rather though."

Bassena blinked. "In...in May?"

"Why?"

Why? Because there was rarely any mango in May, that was why. At least, there was none in the trees. The mangoes in the market around that time were the ones already ripe and being preserved through magic because...who would store and sell unripe mangoes?

But that was what Zein wanted and...what could Bassena do when the man pursed his lips in annoyance?

"N-nothing, I’ll have it for you right away!"

Hmm...he should be able to find some if he scoured the whole continent, right? At worst, he would just buy a lot of instant-growth serum and ask Eleanor to help him grow a tree.

Zein chuckled at the esper’s serious expression before the nausea assaulted him again. "Ah, damn i--"

Naturally, a warm hand covered his mouth before he could finish the curse.

Naturally, the news brought more uproar to the family--both House Ishtera and House Mallarc. The Elder needed oxygen again, but this time his face was rather blissful--he just forgot to breathe for a while.

Also, since there were no twins in Ishtera’s lineage while Bassena had twin aunties in the far Southern Kingdom, it clearly came from Bassena’s side.

That somehow made the Elder forgive him for ’defiling’ the Young Master before marriage.

[As if you don’t know they had been shagging since day one] Arlo said while rolling his eyes--which was very true, but also earned him a series of scolding and a smack on his lips from Lisa.

Anyway, they were celebrating it through the conference call, and Senan’s daughter reported that all preparations for the wedding were going smoothly. It reminded Zein that he had a fitting appointment with Reina for the wedding tux, but that was for his future self to worry about.

In the meantime, he was celebrating with the others. Could he call it a miracle when the conception dream had been there for years already? Oh, well--the process itself was a miracle already, so let’s just call it a miracle.

It was funny how Han Shin and Reina were running around their living room and dancing, laughing, looking even happier than Zein and Bassena on the outside--naturally, Bassena was sure he was happier than anyone else in this world, even with his persistent fear of the children’s future.

Calix and Eleanor were clapping their hands excitedly, saying how happy they were to be grandparents. Ludya and Radia were like a mirror--they didn’t show much, but their lips were curled and they sent all kinds of high-quality baby stuff the next day--typical Mallarcs.

Han Joon...well, he was enjoying the other reaction wordlessly as usual, before commenting about how Bassena would probably become a helicopter dad in the future.

Throughout the interaction, Zein was smiling, unconsciously rubbing his still-flat abdomen.

Aren’t you happy? He thought inwardly. There are a lot of people waiting for your arrival.

And of course, Zein was the one most impatient of them all.
