Chapter 604: Chapter 598. The Sea of Fire

Zein hurriedly ducked past projectile magic fleeting on top of the ship and dashed inside the command bridge.

"The vault!" he said loudly to beat the loud sounds of battle.

The Captain was startled at first, but upon seeing Zein, he understood immediately. He rushed toward the vault under the command table and put on a passcode that slid open a keyhole slot. After using the key that Gus gave him, Zein took out the tube with two shards in it and deactivated the glass wall.

"Be quiet and hide your presence as much as you can," Zein told the twins immediately before they could buzz around him. "It’s dangerous outside, so come inside the ring. It’s kind of cramped with five of you, but be good to each other, okay? The other three are new, and one is still sleeping."

After spending a few seconds nuzzling the guide’s cheeks, the twins nodded and dove inside the ring. Zein rubbed the ring’s surface to seal it with Setnath’s energy before standing up to look at the battle from the bridge’s window.

It was still as fierce as ever, but the Giant Serpent had arrived at the dock and blocked the beasts’ advance. It did not actively move around since Bassena was still in deep meditation, but it was enough as an automatic shredding fence.

Hari and Carra immediately cast support magic at the espers and curse magic at the beasts, while Han Shin ran toward the ship, looking for someone in need of healing. Zein saw Senan and Cohen was about to jump to the dock and immediately pressed his commlink.

"I’m okay; guard Bassena and get rid of the beasts around the dock."

The two defenders flinched and Zein hurriedly came out to the deck so the two loyal bodyguards could see him. Even from afar, their relieved gesture could be seen clearly, and Zein felt a bit guilty about what he had done earlier.

But he couldn’t help it; he was worried the Fallen Star would send a fragment to rip the shard off the Sea Serpent, so he couldn’t even explain properly. Well, it didn’t matter now.

Thankfully, they followed his words. Senan slammed his tower shield against the platform barrier and created a shimmering shield around Bassena, while Cohen jumped off the other side, creating a shockwave that flew the encroaching miasmic beasts back.

Zein went to his commlink again; this time trying to connect to Radia’s channel.

[Come in]

"Command Center, please get rid of the dungeons in the East; we experience flooding," Zein reported. "Also, we retrieved the shard on the sea."

There was a pause before a reply finally came with a bit of static sound. [--ood job. The cle..ing team...on the way]

"Thanks!" Gus patted Zein’s back and jumped off the ship to the dock, dashing forward with two swords in his hands.

With the Sea Serpent helping them, there was no need for Gus to do complicated maneuvers in the sea. He could focus on cleaning the port city while the Eastern Sun and Zhan pushed the Fallen Star back.

But pushing back was not what the Eastern Sun wanted. She wanted to beat this ’main’ enemy, the Grand Boss, but what...she couldn’t breach that barrier just like everyone else. It hurt her pride that she couldn’t do anything different than the other kids with less experience.

"Get out of the way, kid! I’m going to use a big one!" she hissed in indignation; the wind whipped around her as her mana rose massively.

If it didn’t work, perhaps she just used not enough of it.

With this thought, she prepared to go all out and used her best spells.

"Whoa, whoa~" Zhan, realizing the mood shifting and intense heat coming out of her, immediately jumped away from the growling Fallen Star, who had been moving defensively due to the barrage of attacks from them.

Chains of lights from the Eastern Sun’s assistant bound the cloaked figure while the spell was chanted, and Zhan kept on moving backward since he had no idea how far the range of the attack would be.

Because of their combined attacks earlier, the surrounding area had been completely devastated, and the beasts around had been annihilated. Still, some of the beasts from another district were moving toward the bright light of spell activation, including the rampaging boss from the newly breaking gate.

Should I take care of the boss, instead? While contemplating this, Zhan bumped into someone.

"Yo," a familiar voice he hadn’t heard for months greeted him, along with a smack on the back of his head.

Zhan was too excited to even feel annoyed by it. "Hey! You’re still alive!"

"You’ve been thinking I was dead?" Gus rolled his eyes, before they both stared at each other and cackled.

"Let’s get rid of that while the Aunty is busy," the spearman pointed his halberd toward the stomping dragon a few hundred meters away. "I have a bad experience with an overgrown lizard today, so I’ll take it out on that one."

Gus chuckled at the wide green of his partner in crime and gripped his swords in response. "Heh--been a while, huh?"

"Yep."

With a nod and a high spirit, they hunted the beasts on their path and clashed against the roaring dragon in the north. Meanwhile, a massive pillar of fire flared up from beneath the Fallen Star, engulfing the cloaked figure with a blue flame and brightening up the dark sky.

Not enough--the Eastern Sun spread her hand and ten small white balls came out of the tip of her fingers. They gathered and stuck to each other like praying beads and started to rotate. With a flick of the Easter Sun’s arm, the white beads flew toward the Fallen Star while rotating, getting bigger and bigger until the hollow part in the middle was big enough.

The beads circle slammed down the Fallen Star, entrapping the cloaked figure inside the circle of connecting beads. Annoyingly, the figure cloaked in dark purple energy was still standing fine, only angrier. But before it could do anything, one of the beads shot out of the formation and hit the Fallen Star--or rather, the barrier--and exploded in white bright light. Once the flame died down or was eaten up by the dark purple smoke, another bead would shoot forward, and the constricting prison grew tighter and tighter.

Like that, chains of explosion kept flaring up without giving the Fallen Star any time to rest. The shockwave devastated any remaining building and soon turned the area where the Fallen Star stood into a crater.

"Oh~that felt all this way here," Zhan whistled at the parade of explosions happening on the west side, before yanking his halberd out of the dead dragon’s neck.

"Phew," Gus jumped off the dragon’s torn back and huffed a relieved sigh. "Thank Gods it’s an Earth Dragon. We have no leeway to fight a flying dragon right now."

Aerial battles could only be done by a few high-ranking espers, especially magicians. But the Eastern Sun was busy with the Fallen Star, and Senia was still on sea-cleaning duty. Against high-ranking beasts, the mana cannon couldn’t do much, and the raygun lacked the flexibility to chase a flying creature.

It wouldn’t be impossible for the both of them, per se, just complicated and annoying,

"Yeah," Zhan grinned and stabbed his halberd into the ground, stretching out his tired back. "Isn’t it good that the Fallen Star can’t fly?"

Khraaaaah!

An ear-piercing scream suddenly rang out and the two warriors reflexively looked toward the west side. A storm of dark purple popped out of the remaining two beads and sent them exploding in the Eastern Sun’s direction, hurling her back and smacking against a clock tower wall that instantly crumbled.

"Ugh--"

There was almost no building remaining in this port city, so it was easy for them to see two membrane wings sprout out of the Fallen Star’s back as the remaining white flame only managed to crack the barrier and nothing more.

"Zhan..."

"Oops?"

"Like I’ll let you!" the Eastern Sun dashed out of the crumbling wall and a wall of fire erupted in front of the Fallen Star.

However, it ignored the firewall and bent its lower body. The wings flapped and the cloaked figure dashed toward the sky. The Eastern Sun, gritting her teeth, called forth dozens of intense fireballs from the sky. Like shooting stars, they fell above the cloaked figure.

But wings gave an added mobility, and the Fallen Star dodged the raining comets and flew above the sea of fire scorching what once used to be a port city. Beneath those purple haze, dozens of eyes gleamed, seeing nothing but the ship.

Perhaps that was why it did not see a pair of amber eyes open and stared at it deeply. It didn’t see strange energy gathered on a black-armored hand, and it didn’t see Bassena fly in front of it, slamming it down with a fistful of energy it longed for and yet hated. Untouchable.

With a dented barrier, both the Fallen Star and Bassena Vaski fell into the sea of fire.
